Both titles second editions Alpini's title first published in 1591 Bondt's in 1642. Alpini was a physician and botanist Bondt a Dutch physician and pioneer of tropical medicine. Alpini's work is illustrated with four in-text and two full page woodcuts. Alpini traveled in Egypt and became the fourth prefect of the Botanical Garden in Padua. "One of the earliest European studies of nonwestern medicine. Alpini's work dealt primarily with contemporary i.e. Turkish practices observed during a three-year sojourn in Egypt. These included moxibustion - the production of counter-irritation by placing burning or heated material on the skin - which Alpini introduced into European medicine. Alpini also mentioned coffee for the first time in this work" Norman. With extensive index at rear. De Bondt was a pioneer of tropical medicine. His work on East Indian medicine included here is based on experiences during four years he spent in Djakarta. It was the first important treatise on diseases in East India and includes the first modern description of Cholera and other tropical diseases. First published posthumously in 1642. Index at rear. Revolutionary-era sermon dedicated to George Washington in which Duché urges the people of Philadelphia to stand fast despite the unnaturalness of being in conflict with their fellow British subjects. "We venerate the Parent Land from whence our progenitors came.But if we are to judge from the late ungenerous and ill-digested plans of policy which have been adopted by those whom she hath entrusted with the powers of Administration we cannot but think that they began to be jealous of our rising glory and from an ill-grounded apprehension of our aiming at independency were desirous of checking our growth." Jacob Duché 1737-98 was born in Philadelphia and educated there before studying at Cambridge University. He returned to Philadelphia and eventually became rector of Christ Church. His early zeal for the revolutionary cause was such that he was appointed chaplain to the Continental Congress. After the Declaration of Independence and the capture of Philadelphia by General Howe Duché had a change of heart and wrote George Washington asking him to urge Congress to recall the Declaration and negotiate a peace. He was branded a traitor by his former followers and went into exile in Great Britain before returning to his beloved Philadelphia in 1792 to live out his final years. This sermon first published in Philadelphia in 1775 the same year as this first British edition. This copy with provenance to American Loyalist Anglican minister Thomas Bradbury Chandler who had been exiled in London since 1775 after threats by the Sons of Liberty. Moderate toning faint dampspotting in places faint dampstaining to lower corners of first five leaves. A handsomely bound copy of a landmark title. $1000. First edition. As Cowley has pointed out A New Law-Dictionary was both Jacob's masterpiece and "an entirely new departure in legal literature" that provided a model for several subsequent efforts. In contrast to earlier works each entry summarizes all of the laws relating to the subject and offers extensive interpretive commentary. Obsolete terms are omitted. It was recognized almost immediately that Jacob created a highly useful legal encyclopedia that was more detailed and concise than any other abridgment of the period. An extremely popular work that went through twelve editions between 1729 and 1800 it offers unparalleled insights into Anglo-American law during the eighteenth century. Holdsworth thought highly of this book noting its "a learned book-the author tells us that he had consulted nearly a hundred authorities; the idea of making such a book was original; and the main features of the constitution are set out." In his preface Jacob indicates that he did not write this treatise on England's Constitution for the landed gentry exclusively but for "gentlemen of all ranks" that is the literate general public. This distinction is significant. Jacob though certainly interested in boosting sales by attracting the widest audience possible was an idealist who believed that widespread knowledge of the law would help create a more just society. Jacob Le Duchat 1658-1735 was a French literary scholar whose 1711 edition of the works of Rabelais was the first to include historical and critical commentary. "Le Duchat’s is the first of the critical editions. It takes account of differences in the texts and begins to point out the variations. His very numerous notes are remarkable and are still worthy of most serious consideration. He was the first to offer useful elucidations and these have been repeated after him and with good reason will continue to be so. Le Duchat’s commentary was translated into English by John Ozell for his 1737 edition of Gargantua and Pantagruel."
