Recently rebound in brown full calf with blind fillet borders and centrepiece ornaments to boards 4 raised bands to spine scarlet morocco spine label with gilt spine title leaves uncut. Small closed tear to frontispiece repaired plus two or three short closed tears in text a few small nicks to leaves mild scattered foxing throughout. An sympathetically rebound copy in fine condition. The first and most comprehensive book on the infamous body-snatching serial killers William Burke 1792-1829 and William Hare being published in the same year as the trial and execution for a British audience eager for the macabre details of the sensationalist case. The authorship has been attributed to the publisher Thomas Ireland with the help of various contemporary sources. Contains dramatic trial reports confessions crime scene illustrations a harrowing description of Burke's execution phrenological measurements and descriptions of Burke's public dissection "The quantity of blood that gushed out was enormous that. the classroom had the appearance of a butcher's slaughterhouse from its flowing down and being trodden upon". Cheaply printed on rag pulp paper copies tend not to have survived; those that are found in commerce are either ex-library foxed or as here rebound. It is hard to see how this collection could be bettered the range of signatures from sanity to madness being of particular interest. All seven examples laid down on a folio leaf extracted from an album. The leaf is in poor condition creased and with closed tears but the parchment and paper bearing the signatures themselves in good condition the six parchment items having the usual discoloration but the example on paper in excellent condition. Six of the signatures on rectangles ranging in size from 10 x 7 cm to 8 x 5 cm are arranged in two columns of three items each and beneath this arrangement across the foot of the page is the irregular fragment cut from the top left-hand corner of a warrant 16cm at its widest and 12.5 cm at its longest. The largest and clearest of the six signatures above the warrant is the one at top left which is on paper. Here the ‘George R.’ is neatly boldly and stylishly written. The signature beside this at the head of the right-hand column is the one which has been neatly annotated with the date: it is somewhat faded and has been laid down upside down. The signature at the bottom of the right-hand column has clearly been written while insane or blind. The warrant has a similarly afflicted signature at top right and beneath this is the king’s circular seal 4cm in diameter with the crest of the United Kingdom on the customary diamond of paper 6 cm square laid over the red wax. The surviving text a mixture of printed and manuscript the latter given in square brackets below reads: ‘George the Third . / Great Britain and . / and Wellbeloved . / We do by the . / here of . / L. / G.’. One with annotated with date 28 March 1792, the others undated. None with place. unknown

First and only edition, small 4to (205 x 155 mm), 4pp., drop-head title, small piece torn from inner upper blank margin, disbound. Effusive praise of the politician soon to become Lord Chancellor of Ireland. The occasion of the present pamphlet was Brodrick's return to power as Speaker of the Irish House of Commons after being out of office for two years. He was returned at the 1713 election, held under the lord lieutenancy of the Duke of Shrewsbury, and presumably the date in the title of the poem refers to the occasion of his being chosen as speaker, in a contest with a court-sponsored Tory candidate. What was presumably a Tory reply, A Letter to the Author of the Speaker, appeared soon after (Foxon, L154).
