1935625Los Angeles: Automobile Club of Southern California 1935. 17 3/4 x 13 3/4 inches. Very good condition. Map of Ventura County showing an absence of settlement appropriate to the time of the map. Oxnard dominates the urban landscape. The northern parts of the county are sans roads and buildings. The map is however finely detailed because of the use of hatchers. It is easy to see the elevations and details of the national forest. There is no legend for this map making it more interpretive. This is an attractively composed map focused on the main arteries running into and out of Los Angeles. a comprehensive legend shows the details contained in the map. There is an absence of freeways. Route 66 is prominently shown entering the city from the east. Route 99 is shown entering from the northwest. The design and graphic display make the map easy to read. 1920616San Francisco: California State Automobile Association 1920. 17 3/4 x 12 inches. Very good condition. This is a carefully planned map printed in blue with red over printed roads on the verso. The red roads are paved and oiled roads the remaining blue roads are gravel of dirt. The majority fit in the latter category. There is a paved road running from the Bay to Willits with a portion being blue Most paved roads are around the Bay Area where the major populations are centered. Red roads have both heavy lines and light lines for the user to decipher. On the recto is a listing of service centers for the driver. There is a section for "Electric Service Stations." Overall this is a very informative map printed in an era of little information for the automobile traveler. California State Automobile Association unknown

Ink slightly fading. Withal a VG example. Single sheet printed recto only. Orange George Washington 2 cent stamp to left-hand corner. Oblong format: 4" x 8-1/2" <br/><br/>"Received from Geo. Howes & Co Twelve Hundred & Twenty 79/11 Dollars the same being for our telegraphic order this date on our New York Office to pay Henry J. Hallet from Howes US Gold coin Eleven Hundred Seventy Seven 50/100 Dollars." Total is $1220.79 - quite a large sum in 1865! The Bank of California was opened in San Francisco on July 4 1864 just a year before this note was printed. It was the first commercial bank in the Western United States the second-richest bank in the nation getting all the West Coast wealthy patrons it wanted and considered instrumental in the development of the American West. The Bank stood at the corner of California and Sansome streets in San Francisco and was said to be "one of the handsomest structures on the coast." At the heigh of the BofCA's power owner Ralston and his "Ring" as his associates were known were able to exert monopolistic influence over sections of commerce and industry in San Francisco and in Virginia City.
