The first pages of this catalogue describe the rise and near fall of the Association and its final stabilization in the 1840's. In 1842 Daniel Webster contributed $500 to the library fund which was matched by $1000 from ten of the Association's prominent members for the purchase of books. With this move more money were raised and the Association Library became "one of the best of its kind in the Country."</p><br /> After the history of the association constitution and by-laws are printed along with an eight-page list of members. The catalogue of the library is comprised of 112 pages listing in short-title format the books daily newspapers and periodicals in the collection. It represents an impressive group of books with focus on American history and literature local history business English books and travel. By 1877 the collection grew to 18000 books and was merged with the collections of the Boston Public Library. Printed for the Association unknown

Woolsen of 7 Bowdoin Square' appears in pencil on the front free endpaper.</p><br /> <p>"Since 1848 see above the date of our last Catalogue the Library has increased from six thousand volumes to sixteen thousand volumes; and although a hastily prepared Supplement was printed in 1851 the titles of nearly six thousand volumes the latest and most valuable additions to the Library were not to be found on any printed Catalogue." </p><br /> The catalogue includes a substantial historical sketch of the library and the acquisitions of books over a thirty-year period. Along with a subscription fee of two dollars members were obliged to present the Library with "one or more volumes either in biography history voyages travels or works relative to mercantile subjest . . ." Between 1758 and 1800 the Boston Overseers of the Poor admitted around 7200 persons into the almshouse. Polly Ballard would have been sent to the almshouse at the corner of Beacon and Park streets in Boston established in 1696 to replace the city's original almshouse which had been destroyed in a fire. The site also included a prison added in 1723 and a separate workhouse built in 1739. The "Almshouse Keeper" was Samuel Whitwell who had served as an overseer of the poor for 21 years. Overseer of the Poor Edward Edes 1745-1803 was a Boston baker who baked among other items ships bread. He was also half-owner of the brigantine merchant ship "Olive Branch." He was the son of Thomas Edes 1719-1794 and Sarah Larabee 1719-1791. He married his half-cousin Elizabeth Edes in 1768 and had two sons. RECIEVED INTO THE ALSMHOUSE. <br/><br/> unknown

Text easily legible and a sound copy.</p> <p>Scarce 1841 catalogue from the Boston Museum and Gallery of Fine Arts on Tremont Street issued the same year the institution opened under the proprietorship of Moses Kimball. Admission to the Museum was 25 cents with catalogues sold for 6¼ cents. Founded as a hybrid institution combining art display public instruction and popular entertainment the Boston Museum quickly became a cultural landmark predating the establishment of the Museum of Fine Arts by three decades.</p> <p>The booklet lists just over 300 works of paintings engravings and marble and plaster statuary—representing an ambitious blend of fine art and patriotic commemoration in antebellum Boston.</p> <p>The catalogue presents this early American museum collection featuring works by prominent and unspecified artists of America and Europe. The museum’s collection held portraits of national figures vernacular portraits popular still life themes of the period.</p> <p>Among the paintings and engravings are Washington’s family by E. Savage Washington by Stuart a self portrait by Benjamin West a landscape by Brughel Death of Absalom by Velasquez Fruit Piece by Carravagio several works by Copley the Duke of Wellington by Charles Wilson Peale various works by E. Savage. There is a long description of the painting Passage of the Delaware by T. Sully.</p> <p>Other examples include portraits of Pocahontas after Thomas Sully a Choctaw warrior presented by Col. Urner" no date. This serialized version ends on Chapter 25 with no more clippings to finish the story. The book contains three sections: "The Plant: Its Habitat and History" "Its Culture" and "Its Curing" with information on the vanilla plant or the vanilla orchid; its countries or regions of origin; and the cultivation and curing processes of vanilla. Text at the end warns customers of unscrupulous door-to-door salespeople peddling fraudulent or low-quality vanilla extracts advocates for grocers to carry only high-quality vanilla extract and advertises Burnett's Vanilla Extract and Burnett's edible Standard Color Pastes.
