1779154781Spain: 1779. Visually appealing manuscript offering a valuable insight into the Spanish naval empire in the Caribbean Fascinating official service record of don Francisco Ximenez Parrado an officer of the Spanish Navy who served during the War of Jenkin's Ear 1739-48. This detailed account signed by Parrado enumerates his services from 1721 to 1779 listing naval campaigns many of them in the Americas. During his career Parrado participated in a range of operations; coastal patrols surveys and some significant naval engagements particularly against the British. In 1729 Parrado joined the Fuerte 60 under don Domingo Justiniani which sailed from Cadiz on 19 December in company with the two-decker frigate Nuestra Señora del Carmen 54. En route to Cartagena the two ships passed Tobago the coasts of Trinidad Margarita Cumana and Caracas. Once at Cartagena they commenced cruising the coasts of Terra Firme Spain's mainland possessions from the Caribbean to the Gulf of Mexico in search of illicit traders. In less than a year they had captured some six frigates and seven sloops carrying contraband off the coast of Venezuela. During the Summer of 1736 Parrado was in the Conquistador under don Blas de Lezo which was under repair in Spain before its embarkation for Cartagena early in 1737 with 1891 tons of cargo and brigadier don Jose Ambrosio the new governor of Chile aboard. The Conquistador remained at Cartagena on coast guard duties until she was scuttled by de Lezo during the battle of Cartagena in 1741 as part of the blockade of Vice-Admiral Edward Vernon's massive invasion assault. British failure here was to prove one of the pivotal moments of the War of Jenkins's Ear. Parrado is shown as having stayed in Cartagena until 1744 after which it seems he joined don Benito Antonio de Espinola in Havana taking part in the 1745 commissioning voyage of the Santa Teresa de Jesus 64 better known as the Dragon. The manuscript details an engagement in that year with an unnamed British vessel of 60 guns "quese avisto diferentes vezes frente del Puerto" "had been seen several times outside the port ". The Dragon's main mast was split and she was forced the quit the battle. The document also notes Parrado's presence in Tortuga Cabo de San Antonio Puerto Rico and Havana during 1746. The record details Parrada's career under four headings: Empleos "Employments" Campañas "Campaigns" outlined in chronological order Comiciones en que fue Empleado "Commissions in which he was employed" and Funciones en la America "Dutiess in America". Parrado seems to have occupied seven different positions during his career showing a clear ascent through the ranks ; Marinero Agregado a los Pilotos "Sailor attached to the pilots" Arnillero "Gunsmith" with a note that he continued in his role with the pilots Pilotín "Pilot's Assistant" Segundo Piloto "Second pilot" Primer Piloto "First pilot" Alférez de Navío "Frigate lieutenant" a junior watch officer and Teniente de Fragata "First lieutenant" a full lieutenant. Parrado later became the principal teacher at the School of Navigation in Cartagena. This fascinating document offers some welcome insight into a single career during a time of considerable conflict taking place on a world-wide stage. 4 pp. manuscript in neat clearly legible hand on a single bifolium elaborately engraved cartouche to the first page incorporating a three-master atop and enclosing a tabulated manuscript summary of Parrado's postings and positions. Light toning and minor staining. A very good example. Clowes The Royal Navy vol. 3. unknown

This text served to guide the transition of the Navy into a peacetime force after the War of 1812 laying out detailed instructions for various ranks and positions from yard personnel and warrant officers to high-ranking officials. It covers a wide array of topics including ship maintenance naval ceremonies discipline and provisions as well as specific instructions for surgeons pursers marines and midshipmen. The regulations also provided for the handling of convoys and established <strong>clear guidelines for salutes military honors and other ceremonies. This text played a crucial role</strong> in shaping the growth structure and discipline of the U.S. Navy during the early 19th century especially during the presidencies of James Monroe John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson.</p><p><strong>This particular copy belonged to the famous USS Peacock a sloop-of-war that played a significant role in the U.S. Navy during the early 19th century!</strong> Commissioned during the War of 1812 it was part of various naval operations including suppressing piracy in the Caribbean and patrolling South American waters during regional independence movements. After decommissioning in 1827 it was rebuilt for exploration and participated in the United States Exploring Expedition in 1838 eventually meeting its end on the Columbia Bar in 1841. The ship also took part in diplomatic missions such as conveying Francis Baylies to Argentina and engaging in treaty negotiations in Asia. Throughout its service the Peacock navigated various challenges including severe weather conditions and health crises among the crew. The fascinating post-war exploits of the USS Peacock's diplomatic and explorational missions are recorded in American diplomat Edmund Robert's notes that were published in 1837 under the title "<em>Embassy to the Eastern Courts of Cochin-China Siam and Muscat in the U.S. Sloop-of-war Peacock</em>".</p><p>Item number: #41562</p><p>Price: $2500</p><p>CROWNINSHIELD Benjamin Williams; BOARD OF NAVY COMMSIONERS OF THE UNITED STATES</p><p><strong><em>Rules Regulations and Instructions for the Naval Service of the United States: Prepared by the Board of Navy Commissioners of the United States with the Consent of the Honorable the Secretary of the Navy; In Obedience to an Act of Congress Passed Seventh February 1815 Entitled "An Act to Alter and Amend the Several Acts for Establishing a Navy Department by Adding Thereto a Board of Commissioners."</em></strong></p><p>Washington: E. 19390002008ABOARD THE HMS HERMES. Good. 1939. On offer is a sensational 1939 to 1940 manuscript relic of Britain's naval war with Germany at the immediate outset of World War II being an original diary handwritten by Captain G.P.D. Pease Royal Marine aboard the ill-fated HMS Hermes. The diary begins October 7th a mere month after the declarations of war between England and Germany 1939 with sporadic entries from October until mid-December and then another long entry in June of 1940 covering 19 folio sized 8" x 13" pages. Two later pages have damage as if glued pictures were removed with some small loss but not terrible. The ship arrives in Dakar French West Africa to cooperate with the French Navy in hunting German raiders which they then proceed to do. At one point he is invited to go up in an aircraft as an observer. Upon returning they slide across the deck and crash upside down in the sea below. He and the other two aboard were able to escape into a life raft and were rescued. He has a very long entry about this as well as a photo of them being rescued. The long June 1940 entry is interesting as it details the confusion as to what to do with the French Naval ships around them as they don't know what their allegiance is after the capitulation of the French government at that time and the establishment of the Vichy French government loyal to Germany. The Hermes was later sunk in action in 1942. Tucked in are two telegrams from the Admiralty announcing destruction of Graf Spee off Montevideo another regarding HMS Ajax ten Captain's remarks certificates all highly complimentary of his of his abilities dated 1940 - 1957 and his 1938 report card and successful passing to rank of Captain of the Royal Marines. Later he served on the HMS Superb St. Angelo and Implacable. Included are a few miscellaneous photos as well. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original handsome brown quarter leather binding with Ottoman lettered gilt to spine. Five raised bands to spine, separated from each other with lined gilt. Slight stains on the title page. Else a fine copy. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 99 p. Hegira: 1313 = Gregorian: 1895. Extremely rare first printed edition of this one of the earliest travel accounts, of an Ottoman admiral's early expeditions to the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, Red Sea, and Persian Gulf to counter Portuguese piracy and attacks on Muslim pilgrim ships, which describes the lands he has seen during his voyage from India to Constantinople by Sidi (Seydi) Ali Reis (1498-1563) sent by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent covering the years 1553-1556. During these naval wars, after two marine battles against the Portuguese fleet and a great storm named The Elephant Typhoon (Tufan-i Fil) by the locals, Reis' remaining six galleys drifted to India. The fleet was unserviceable, resulting in his return home overland with 50 men. Reis then arrived at the royal court of the Mughal Emperor Humayun in Delhi, where he met the future Mughal emperor Akbar, who was twelve years old at the time. He returned to the Ottoman Land over Muslim states in South Asia; Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Iran. But he delayed his return because of the war between the Ottoman and the Safavid Empires in Iran. Finally, following the treaty of Amasya in 1555, he was able to return home and present his book of this narrative journey to the Sultan in 1557. This work offers an extensive insight into the Muslim situation in 16th century South and Central Asia and the Middle East, Islamic navigation, and Turkish - Portuguese relations as well as Persian, Afghan, and Indian geography, naval routes, flora, and fauna. Seydi Ali Reis, formerly also written Sidi Ali Reis and Sidi Ali Ben Hossein, was an Ottoman admiral and navigator. Known also as Katib-i Rumi, Galatali, or Sidi Ali Çelebi, he commanded the left wing of the Ottoman fleet at the naval Battle of Preveza in 1538. He was later promoted to the rank of fleet admiral of the Ottoman fleet in the Indian Ocean, and as such, encountered the Portuguese forces based in the Indian city of Goa on several occasions in 1554. Seydi was able to unite several Muslim countries on the coast of the Arabian Sea (such as the Makran Kingdom, Gujarat Sultanate, and Adal Sultanate) against the Portuguese. He is famous today for his books of travel such as the Mir'ât ül Memâlik [i.e. The Mirror of Countries], and his books of navigation and astronomy, such as the Mir'ât-i Kâinât (Mirror of the Universe) and the Kitâb ül Muhit: El Muhit fî Ilmi'l Eflâk ve'l Buhûr [i.e. Book of the Regional Seas and the Science of Astronomy and Navigation] which contain information on navigation techniques, methods of determining direction, calculating time, using the compass, information on stars, sun and moon calendars, wind and sea currents, as well as portolan information regarding the ports, harbours, coastal settlements and islands in the various regions of the Ottoman Empire. His books are translated into numerous languages including English, French, Italian, German, Greek, Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Russian, and Bengali, and are considered among the finest literary works dating from the Ottoman period. "When Sultan Suleiman had taken up his winter residence in Aleppo, I, the author of these pages, was appointed to the Admiralship of the Egyptian fleet and received instructions to fetch back to Egypt the ships (15 galleys), which some time ago had been sent to Basrah on the Persian Gulf. But, 'Man proposes, God disposes.' I was unable to carry out my mission, and as I realized the impossibility of returning by water, I resolved to go back to Turkey by the overland route, accompanied by a few tried and faithful Egyptian soldiers. I traveled through Gujarat, Hind, Sind, Balkh, Zabulistan, Bedakhshan, Khotlan, Turan, and Iran
