Howgego III D4 Poore. AB . The Jeannette expedition 1879-81 was led by Lieutenant-Commander George Washington De Long 1844-81. The purpose was to find a route through the Bering Strait that was warmed by the Pacific Kiro Shio current to an open polar sea. The 'Jeannette' became icebound northwest 350 Km and sunk in May 1881 some 400 Km from the Siberian coast. The 33 men provisioned three life boats to drag over the ice to open water for the nearest settlements in Lena Delta. On the water they became separated in a gale and one boat vanished. George Melville's boat with 11 men landed in an eastern bay of the Delta and were able to reach a village to find help. De Long's boat with 14 men landed 100 km away on the northern part of the Delta and with winter coming they were not able to find shelter or game and all perished by the end of October 1881. They were found by Melville's rescue party in March 1882 and the bodies journals and artifacts returned to the United States.

Part 1 of this book is the formal Navy inquiry requested by a joint resolution of Congress for a formal Naval Court of Inquiry on the Loss of the Jeannette which was conducted by the Navy in 1882-3. The 85 day inquiry generated the first compilation of documents and witness statements on the expedition. The Navy Court found no fault in the conduct of the officers or men and commended the actions of De Long and Melville. In Part 2 the Navy transmitted the report of Lieut. G. B. Harber on the search for the remains and artifacts of the De Long party and return the remains to the United States.

In 1884 a separate House inquiry was called due to objections to the Court findings by survivors and survivor's families to members of Congress. The family of Jerome J. Collins reporter for the New York Herald assigned to participate in the expedition and died with De Long's party specifically objected to De Long treatment of Collins Melville's failure to rescue the lost party and the "cover-up" of failures by the Naval Court of Inquiry. The Inquiry detailed with the testimony of 20 witnesses 74 documents filed excerpts of the journals of De Long Ambler and Collins and much questioning by representatives of the Collins family and for Emma De Long and George Melville. There were no conclusions findings or recommendations to the Navy from this inquiry. Government Printing Office unknown

19470001114TENNESSEE NEW CALEDONIA GUADALCANAL SOUTH PACIFIC. Very Good. 1947. On offer is a sensational relic of World War II being a photographic diary with accompanying typescript journal commentary by an unidentified soldier from Tennessee. The Marine did a brilliant job putting together a handmade diary illustrated with two groups of photographs the kind you might have gotten in the PX during the War. Our sense is that the author has either returned to the area or hasn't yet left the arena of the War but soon after the War our author begins this charming retelling of experiences both good and terrible in the South Pacific. He uses twenty-five photographs and then details and stories relating to the people he was with or the scenes depicted in the photos. It is heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time. The soldier does not tell us his name but he makes references to being from Tennessee. He writes of taking a ship to New Caledonia and of people he worked with and situations he encountered. A great deal of his time was spent in Guadalcanal. In one moving passage he tells the story of his friend and mentor Howard H. Gabby Gould III; a soldier during World War I who reenlisted after Pearl Harbor. He became a drill sergeant and then made his way to New Caledonia. There he learned that he was considered unfit for overseas duty. Heartbreakingly Gabby dies of a broken heart 2 weeks after being shipped stateside. This is one of the most unique WWII relics we have come across. Bavaria, under Maximilian I (1598-1651), was a country of around 1 million inhabitants, with agriculture and salt production (a ducal monopoly) being the dominant sectors of the economy. It became a key player in the events leading up to the Thirty Years War. In 1608, Bavaria occupied and annexed the hitherto free Imperial and Lutheran city of Donauworth. The action caused the Protestant princes and cities to found the Protestant Union. Bavaria then concluded an alliance with the Austrian and Hungarian Estates. In 1609 Bavaria became the leading force in the newly founded (Catholic) Holy League, an alliance formed against the Protestant Union. Consolidating his governance, Duke Maximilian, in 1616 introduced a new Bavarian Landrecht (Law Code), which was a compilation, reworking, and summation of all the laws and codes. Includes the codes of: Judicial Procedure; Court Laws; State Laws; Police Law; Forestry, hunting, and fishing regulations; Etc. It became a widespread the model for law and legislation for over 150 years. Stobbe II, 366. Very Scarce. Only a handful of copies are recorded in U.S. libraries. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! CHEST 2/1
186245043Washington: Government Printing Office 1862. 1862. CIVIL WAR. First edition. 8vo. Original blind stamped pebbled brown cloth 2 107 pp. titles stamped in gilt on the front cover plus two colored frontispiece plates and three folding maps. This copy is inscribed on the verso of the first frontispiece plate "Presented by Rear Admiral D.G. Farragut to Acting Master Chas. J. Gibbs." Gibbs served under Farragut on the steam-sloop Richmond and the inscription is almost certainly in Gibbs's own hand noting his receipt of the book from Farragut. Laid into this copy is a small albumen photograph of Farragut's flagship The Hartford with a number of men standing in the foreground. This volume collects a slew of official reports on the highly important Union Navy victories at the mouth of the Mississippi in April 1862 as Farragut captured key Confederate forts on his way to seizing New Orleans. More than two dozen reports from a variety of naval officers describe the six days of ferocious mortar bombardments and the rebel responses a display of firepower that historian James McPherson calls "the greatest fireworks display in American history." The operations that resulted in the capture of forts Jackson and St. Philip and the bombardment and surrender of New Orleans are described in detail. Other reports give casualty figures discuss the disposition of Confederate captives and relate coastal surveys. The plates show the Confederate ironclads Louisiana and Manassas partly submerged in water the latter vessel on fire "as she appeared in passing the 'Harriet Lane' after receiving a broadside from the 'Mississippi.'" The maps include a detailed view of the water and railroad approaches to New Orleans from the south; the Mississippi River below forts Jackson and St. Philip before Farragut's victory; and a plan of Fort Jackson. The well-executed maps and illustrations are all by the Bowen firm of Philadelphia. A volume desirable for its reports of a significant turning point in the Civil War the photograph of Farragut's flagship laid-in and the presentation from Farragut to one of his lieutenants. Expertly rebacked in matching cloth with title page and plates repaired along inner margin and small tears in the maps neatly mended with minor loss by a master paper conservator. Moderate foxing and staining throughout else a very good copy. Government Printing Office, 1862. hardcover
