1944NL-02556
1944 U.S. Navy Confidential Nautical Chart of Pearl Harbor with post-Attack modifications.

This is an unrecorded large-format 1944 confidential U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office nautical chart of Pearl Harbor Oahu. Produced in the wake of the Japanese attack of 1941 it reflects the state of Pearl Harbor during the war when it functioned as America's main staging ground for operations in the Pacific Theater.

The chart covers Pearl Harbor and its approaches west of Honolulu with white and blue shading used to denote shallow vs. deep waters with the latter largely being dredged for the passage of naval warships. Soundings lights buoys and shoals are marked throughout. Bottoms are abbreviated and explained at left below the title. On land roads rail lines fortifications docks rice fields and other military facilities are labeled including Hickham Field now Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam. Two compass roses with magnetic variations and a tidal chart provide additional navigational information.

Ford Island located near center was the target of Japanese attacks on December 7 1941 and specifically the Mooring Platforms on the island's east side was known as 'Battleship Row.' Five ships were sunk here during the attack – the Arizona Oklahoma California West Virginia and Nevada. The latter three were repaired and returned to service during the war but the Arizona was destroyed when a bomb hit its ammunition magazine causing a massive explosion that killed more than a thousand crew members. The Oklahoma was badly damaged and had capsized during the attack; it was salvaged in 1943 but too damaged to return to service instead being stripped of usable materials.

Pearl Harbor after the Attack

In the immediate wake of the December 7 1941 attack Pearl Harbor underwent a frantic transformation from a scene of devastation into a massive 24-hour industrial repair hub. While the shock of the raid lingered the U.S. Navy launched one of the most significant salvage operations in history. Divers and engineers worked tirelessly in the oil-slicked waters to raise ships that many thought were lost forever. Remarkably of the 19 ships sunk or damaged all but three—the USS Arizona USS Utah and USS Oklahoma—were eventually repaired and returned to service. This period was also defined by a state of extreme high alert; Hawaii was placed under martial law and the harbor's defenses were rapidly bolstered with anti-aircraft batteries and coastal fortifications in anticipation of a follow-up invasion that never came.

By early 1942 Pearl Harbor had evolved into the primary staging ground for the entire Pacific Theater. The harbor's role shifted from a vulnerable target to the 'Gibraltar of the Pacific' serving as the nerve center for intelligence and logistics. It was during these months that Station HYPO the clandestine signals intelligence unit at Pearl Harbor began making critical breakthroughs in cracking the Japanese naval code JN-25. This intelligence work combined with the rapid turnaround of damaged vessels in the Pearl Harbor dry docks provided the strategic edge necessary for the U.S. victory at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. The resilience shown in these months effectively turned a tactical defeat into the logistical foundation for the eventual Allied advance across the Pacific.

Publication information and census

This chart was originally prepared from surveys undertaken in 1897 and published by the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office in 1899. It was updated repeatedly afterward with the present map being the 18th edition printed in 1944. Scattered manuscript annotations provide additional corrections to 1945 and some of the printed material near Battleship Row has been scratched out perhaps due to the salvaging of previously sunken ships.

We have been unable to find any examples of this chart in institutional collections or on the market.

'Düsseldorf Edition' says "A spurious work purporting to be the logbook of Christopher Columbus, which, according to legend, he threw into the sea during a storm, and which was found on the coast of Pembrokeshire 400 years later. Written in antiquated English, with paper and binding made to imitate in color and appearance a volume damaged by exposure to seawater. "S.A.S.X. MY XPO FERENS" from cover, variously interpreted, eg. Supples servus altissimi Salvatoris Xristi Mariae Josephi Xpoferens. Forgery attributed to Karl Maria Seyppel. Printed by lithographic process on imitation parchment paper. Text and illustrations printed to appear handwritten, with many decorated initials. Accompanied by: reproduction of a letter purported to be by the finder of the logbook dated "September forth 1890"; "Don~a Isabel por gracia de Dios Reina do Castilla y Leon, etc., etc. a? Don Cristo?bal Colon de Ge?nova," supposed letter on imitation parchment, authorizing his voyage, dated "Granada, a? trece de abril de mccccxcij," with an attached seal, laid in.". This is a fine hoax on Colombus' first travel into America. It includes a map containing Cuba, San Salvador, and unknown areas with a hand drawing of Columbus as well as other illustrations and decorative borders, etc. This Edition may be printed in memory of the 400th year of '1492'. "Columbus's log of the first voyage has not survived, although we do have an abstract of it, written in the 1530s by Bartolome de las Casas. However, that actually used the "Barcelona Copy" of Columbus's original log. The chart above shows the sources that exist today in green, and sources that have disappeared in red. The chart also shows where secondary souses got their original information. When he returned to Spain in 1493, Columbus gave his original log to the Sovereigns at the royal court in Barcelona. Queen Isabela ordered the log to be copied, resulting in the so-called Barcelona Copy. The original has not been seen since, however, the Barcelona Copy was returned to Columbus just before his second voyage later that year, and remained in his possession until his death in 1506. It then passed into the hands of son Fernando, who used it when he wrote a biography of Columbus in 1538. The Barcelona Copy too was lost sometime after 1554. Sometime around 1530, the Barcelona Copy was abstracted by Las Casas into the Diario. This abstract as part of his research that led to his massive work, the Historia de las Indias. So The Diario remains our best historical record of the first voyage of Columbus. On the westward passage, Columbus kept two sets of distance figures in the log. According to Las Casas, this was done to allay the fears of the crew that they had sailed too far from Spain. The abstract is mostly written in the third person, but there are a number of large direct quotes from the log written in Columbus's own first-person.". (Source: Christopher-Columbus Europe website).

2019012393UK: Thames and Hudson. A Fine UK first edition & first printing slipcased hardback - no dustjacket as issued - Paula Rego is an artist of astonishing power with a unique and unforgettable aesthetic. Taking its cues from the artist this fascinating study invites us to reflect on the complexities of storytelling on which Rego s work draws emphasizing both the stories the pictures tell and how it is that they are told. Deryn Rees-Jones sets interpretations of the pictures in the context of Rego s personal and artistic development across sixty years. We see how Rego s art intersects with the work of both the literary and the visual and come to understand her rich and textured layering of reference: her use of the Old Masters; fiction fairy tales and poems; the folk traditions of Rego s native Portugal; and her wider engagement with politics feminism and more. The result is a highly original work that addresses urgent and topical questions of gender subject and object self and other. - All my books are always securely packed with plenty of bubblewrap in professional boxes and promptly dispatched within 2-3 days - SIGNED BY PAULA REGO - Pictures available upon request. . 1908180796London: 1908. Admiral Dunbar-Nasmith's copy with additional illustrations A specially produced copy likely issued to dignitaries from the library of Admiral Sir Martin Dunbar-Nasmith although unmarked as such. It contains an additional six postcard illustrations of HMS Dreadnought Bellerophon Superb Invincible and Indomitable. Dunbar-Nasmith captained a D-class submarine from 1911 to 1912 and served aboard HMS Indomitable in November 1908. The launch of HMS Dreadnought in 1906 represented a revolution in naval firepower. "In her day the Dreadnought was the cynosure of the early twentieth-century battleship. So epoch making was this one ship that all subsequent battleships are usually referred to as dreadnoughts the name becoming a generic term" Parkinson p. xi. As such the British government was keen to show her off to foreign visitors. In June 1908 the Prime Minister of Nepal Maharaja Sri Teen Chandra Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana 1863-1929 and his entourage were invited to watch the ship on exercise in the English Channel. To accompany this visit the admiralty distributed a small souvenir volume with descriptions and photographs of Dreadnought the Navy's D-class submarines and its torpedo boat destroyers. There are two known states of this work. The more common features a gilt-lettered front board title page captioned tissue guard for the photograph of Dreadnought and folding map. The present rarer state does not have these features but instead has six additional chromolithograph postcard illustrations at the rear. Dunbar-Nasmith 1883-1965 was a Royal Navy submarine captain throughout the First World War and awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in the Sea of Marmara in 1915. Octavo. Eight tipped-in gelatin silver prints on matte paper with captioned tissue guards and six colour postcard illustrations. Original blue calf by Eyre & Spottiswoode spine gilt in compartments flat bands elaborate gilt panels to boards front board stamped with royal arms in gilt rear board stamped with admiralty device in gilt gilt dentelles silk doublures and endpapers gilt edges binder's stamp to front free endpaper verso. Abrasions and silverfishing to front board edges and dentelles binding sprung pages a little crinkled some foxing internally: a very good copy. Uncut in later drab wrappers chipped and torn lower wrapper especially. Title leaf soiled with abrasion costing four letters in first line. Some old folds and minor soiling bottom corner of last leaf crumpled. First edition. A2 B-2B4. 4 190 2 ad pp. Errata leaf follows title page. 1 vols. 8vo. Written by Thomas Lewis O'Beirne 1748-1823 the Anglican divine whose first publication was the sermon he preached "An excellent sermon preached in St. Paul's Church New-York" NY 1776 as chaplin in Lord Howe's fleet at St. Paul's Chapel in New York after the disastrous fire in New York City of September 21 1776 probably set by Patriot arsonists. Upon his return to England in 1779 O'Beirne wrote a defense of Howe in "A Candid and Impartial Narrative of the Transactions of the Fleet ." L. 1779 and became more and more allied with the Whig party.

This is his defense of Admiral Keppel in the politically charged dispute with Sir Hugh Palliser and Lord Sandwich over their actions in the engagement with the French fleet off the coast of Brest in July 1778. Charges and counter-charges flew over that indecisive and costly encouter Kessel being accused "misconduct and neglect of duty" and of not having done enough to finish off the crippled French fleet. Indeed a claim was made at the time "that had the French been defeated at the time a diplomatic mission to America giving them the opportunity to abandon the French treaty would not have failed" DNB Palliser on the other hand was accused of neglecting to obey an order to come to the support of the rest of the fleet. The dispute ultimately resulted in court-martials of both men resulting in the acquittal of each although Palliser was censured and ruined while Keppel refused to serve under the current Ministry.

"The whole episode had severely weakened the standing of the Navy. Keppel asked not be sent to sea under the current Ministry and so the Admiralty retired him which led to a general resignation by his naval supporters depriving the Navy of many able officers in the continuing war against America." - DNB

The first edition of O'Beirne's account of the two court martials although well represented in institutions is rare on the market; and only one copy of the 2nd edition has appeared at auction over the last 30 years. 16946281London: Josiah Bromley 1694. First Edition. Loose Broadside Framed Under Glass. Good. Original one-sheet broadside roughly trimmed 8-1/8 by 12-4/8 inches. Printed on rag paper with old creases now mellowed and two archival tissue repairs on left margin. Mounted on mat board with mat board overlay. Overlay with edge-wear. Framed under glass. First Lord of the Admiralty Edward Russell 1653 -1727 was a key figure in the Nine Years War notably establishing his reputation at the Battles of Barfleur and La Hougue.
Following a decisive 1693 victory over the French navy near Cape Barfleur the House of Commons determined that Russell had not done enough in dispatching French ships; he was removed from duty. After disasters that befell the British Navy in summer 1693 Russell was reinstated. In early May 1694 he was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty and sailed for the Mediterranean to thwart French depredations against the Spanish coast near Barcelona and Palamos. The engagement documented here likely occurred enroute to the Mediterranean.

With the idiosyncratic spelling and usage common to the era. e.g. "we were buzzed about the ears .". A charming patriotic broadside from reign of William and Mary. Rare. No institutional copies located.
. Josiah Bromley unknown
