81637United States Navy. Demonstration Model. Demonstration Model--equipment. Very good. Lockheed Martin completed a 23-year production run of Mk4 reentry body assembly hardware kits used to house nuclear warheads in the Trident I C4 and Trident II D5 submarine launched ballistic missile arsenal. The Mk4 reentry system developed jointly in the early 1970's by the Navy Strategic Systems Programs and the Department of Energy DOE is specifically designed to house the missile's W76 nuclear warhead. The W76 is a United States thermonuclear warhead designed for use on the UGM-96 Trident I sea-launched ballistic missiles SLBMs and subsequently moved to the UGM-133 Trident II. The first variant the W76 mod 0 W76-0 was manufactured from 1978 to 1987 and was gradually replaced by the W76 mod 1 W76-1 between 2008 and 2018 completely replacing the Mod 0 in the active stockpile. In 2018 it was announced that some Mod 1 warheads would be converted to a new W76 mod 2 W76-2 version. The first Mod 2 warheads were deployed in late 2019. The W76-0 was fitted inside a Mk4 reentry vehicle reentry body in US Navy parlance while the W76-1 and -2 are fitted inside the new Mk4A reentry vehicle. This MK4/SE Surelock demonstration model may have been produced by Lockheed Martin. The Mk4 SE Surelock is a demonstration model for a system to allow a Mk4 Reentry Body not Vehicle this is for the Navy to be lifted and attached to various mounting fixtures. The proposed system was accepted and became "Captive Bolts"

The need for such a system revolved around the fact that the Mk4 arrives mounted in a container and must then be detached from that and lifted to a series of mounting stands associated with various RB tests and checks.

The system accomplishes this through the use of a precision adjustable screw arrangement. By turning the screw settings can be achieved that
- allow the RB to be detached from its container
- allow a lifting fixture to be attached to the Surelock system and thus the RB
- allow the hoisted RB to be then attached to any of the required mounting fixtures
- allow the lifting fixture to be removed from the Surelock

The model itself is comprised to represent three things:
- the wide bottom disc is a "mounting fixture"
- the second smaller disc plus the screw assembly is "the RB" or specifically the RB and the "Captive Bolt" that is part of the RB or more specifically part of the RBA or RB Assembly
- the yellow collar is a "lifting fixture"

By turning the screw one can achieve two new configurations:
- the lifting collar can be removed as it would be after the RB has been placed and secured onto a mounting fixture
- the mounting fixture the wide base can be firmly attached representing a mounted RB or released i.e. when the RB is be lifted to the next mounting fixture

"The Manual" is the typed set of instructions on the underneath of the base. 19550002329ASEA ABOARD THE USS GLACIER. Good. 1955. On offer is a super pair of significant original manuscript journals handwritten by Lieutenant P.Y. Matthews Jr. a United States Navy Chief Engineer of the noted USS Glacier detailing the Chief's voyage and participation in Operation Deep Freeze I making for a very detailed account in two volumes beginning in the Antarctic upon arrival December 15 1955 until departure April 1 1956. Written as a group of letters titled 'Dear Jan' it appears from entries in the journal that Jan was perhaps a niece the narrative makes for an intimate sharing of observations and impressions of all the Chief sees. The Chief is as each and every entry attests a personable enthusiastic participant in the voyage who well realizes the significance of the trip. I his own words: 'DEAR JAN The stirring saga of the USS GLACIER the world's most powerful ice breaker and its first polar voyage through six of the seven seas including ice breaking in Antarctica for Operation Deep Freeze I.' We note he writes of sitting down with Admiral Byrd too! Adding great depth are a small number of hand drawn maps diagrams and pictures. Volume 1 is rather half full with 80 or so pages of writings as he only uses the facing pages but Volume 2 contains only a few pages of text the rest is blank as the expedition had ended. Also includes a newspaper clipping about Matthews stating that he had taken much color film footage of Antarctica and Little America. Tucked in is a copy of a document stating that Matthews was in the first landing party on Princess Astrid Coast the original was placed in a cairn there. 18660001640ASEA ABOARD USS DACOTAH BRAZIL FALKLAND IS. Fair. 1866. On offer is a super original 1866 manuscript relic of maritime and naval history being a journal handwritten by US Navy Asst. Engineer Hiram Parker Jr. Dated January 26th 1866 and ending on May 13th 1866 Parker details his voyage on the noted gunboat USS Dacotah to Rio de Janiero Medina Brazil and last entries were from the Faulkland sometimes Falkland Islands known as the Malvinas Islands to most South Americans. Parker and his ship arrive at the height of the intense and horrific "Great War of La Plata" 1864 - 1870 a war against Paraguay which was the bloodiest and most expensive in South American history. Parker does a super job observing and detailing the people the sights and of course matters of interest to a US seaman but first and foremost he spends most of his time describing the culture the people and the politics of Brazil. This is a 7" x 8 1/2" journal has narrative on 86 pages most are full pages. He mentions one young crew member being hit on the head by a sheet block while asleep cracking his skull and killing him also diving boys off ship for coins different machine repairs to the ship but our author has a lovely way with words and carries his love for Country and the ship on his sleeve: "We have indeed been having some rough weather. How the wind did blow & how high the waves ran. I never saw either excelled in all my precious sea going. Ur little craft showed herself equal to the emergency though she experienced a terrible rolling. American oak and iron and American hearts under the American ensign protected by the God of Nations should be equal to any emergency." Each page is filled with interesting observations when they reach Brazil from the holiday for the Emperor's grandson to entries like this: "Acting Master Price was buried in Potters field for the Catholics never permit Protestants to be buried in their cemeteries." This diary is really outstanding for bringing the reader right into the heart of Brazil through the eyes of an heroic 25 year old American veteran of the Civil War with the soul of a poet. 18790002013ASEA ABOARD THE HMS TRIUMPH HMS TURQUOISE. Very Good. 1879. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of naval life and adventure for a young British midshipman and future Admiral named Albert Sumner Lafone during his service and first voyage on H.M.S. Triumph Flag Ship of the Pacific Squadron in the years 1879 - 1880. Titled 'Extracts from letters written by to his mother while on his first voyage' the elegant 9 x 7 inch black limp leather covers gilt panelling and marbled endpapers. The 104 pages are fair copies in a secretarial hand or perhaps a scrivener of the intimate descriptive letters to his mother of the future Admiral Lafone while under the command of the Arctic explorer Captain Albert Markham likely written soon afterwards by a friend or family member from the originals which are unaccounted for. Albert proves to be a gifted writer making for keen eyed observation and intelligence. He provides significant accounts of the 'stirring events' of the Battle of Iquique between the navies of Bolivia Peru and Chile sent from HMS Turquoise illustrated with a 'rough' chart ending in the ruse by which the Independencia's Captain 'endeavoured to ram the Covadonga. The threatened blow was skilfully avoided by a sudden rush ahead and the great ironclad ran right up on to the reef the surf breaking over her. the Captain set her on fire and the crew escaped in boats'. There follows a vivid account of the sinking of the Esmerelda 'each crew firing their guns as the water touched it. They went down shouting "Viva el Chile"'. There are visits to Acapulco and an Admiralty commissioned scientific survey and research voyage to the Galapagos Islands which was written up in the Royal Geographic Society Monthly Record in 1880 with its 'lava rocks' and San Francisco the Lafone finds himself moored at Esquimault in British Columbia where the ship is refitted and he devotes himself to observation of local culture: 'About 2 miles from the ship there is an indian village; the people are half civilised'. This doesn't prevent games of football with locals vividly described rowing races visits by trainee Japanese officers and a fund raising drive for a ball and provision of a social club despite criticism of 'the society about here' as 'regular republicans'. The first ill-fated attempt to colonize Guiana with some 12000 men in 1763 failed with a loss of about ten thousand settlers killed by tropical diseases and hostile natives. The second endeavor in 1776 was much more successful. Under the administration of Pierre-Victor Malouet and with the assistance of the Swiss engineer Jean Samuel Guisan — and the heavy use of slave work — France established flourishing agriculture in the colony. This period ended very soon in the early 1790s when French Guiana was partly turned into a penal colony for political prisoners of the Revolution.

The present 1788 pamphlet describes the ill-fated first and the more successful second wave of colonization and designs an administrative plan based on slave work for the future success of the colony. Many chapters deal with the slaves and their work and the author states that the “government should pay for about 3000 African slaves to be introduced annually to populate Guyane until they are numerous enough to reproduce themselves.†p. 15

The essay was published anonymously but the author’s name and title were added in ink by a contemporary hand to the title page of the copy held at the British Library however for the most part it remained indecipherable to us: Par M. Il est illustré de 134 planches hors texte et de et 6 vignettes par Demasso, Bouchet, Ogier et Cars.
