Unpublished typescript for an illustrated address given to the Royal South Australian Yacht Club in September 1929 by Robert Lockhart Jack 1878-1964 with annotations in his hand. <br> <br>In January 1900 at the age of 22 Jack travelled with his father Robert Logan Jack 1845-1921 pioneer geologist and the first Government Geologist for Queensland to select and acquire mines in the Western Chinese province of Szechuan on behalf of an Anglo-Belgian Company. Chengtu Chengdu the capital served as a starting point for research trips to record the deposits of mineral resources on the Chinese-Tibetan border on behalf of English companies. Jack's lively and detailed description of the methods and incidents of the 1400 mile 2250 km journey on the Yangtze offer fascinating insights into life and customs along the great river at that time as well as mindful of his audience very detailed descriptions of sailing vessels. With the start of the Boxer Rebellion the expedition was cancelled immediately and as a precaution their return journey was along the shortest route: still some 700 kms 450 miles of mountainous and uncharted terrain; south along the Chinese-Tibetan border where they reached British territory again on October 20th and the town of Bhamo in Upper Burma a day later. <br> <br>Robert Lockhart Jack began his career working in Europe South Africa and China becoming assistant government geologist of South Australia from 1912. He led an expedition to the Everhard and Musgrave Ranges in 1914. He joined BHP in 1931 and became chief geologist retiring in 1948. . unknown

First edition of an antiquarian classic by John Selden 1584-1654 eminent jurist polymath prolific scholar and in recent times celebrated for his ownership of the earliest surviving Chinese merchant map of East Asia re-discovered with justifiable fanfare as a treasure of the Bodleian Library by Robert Batchelor in 2008. <br> <br>At the time of its release Selden's "The History of Tithes": "gave great offense to the clergy and was vigorously refuted in a number of volumes to which Selden was forbidden the right to print replies" Pforzheimer. It has been noted that the absence of the printer's name and the place of publication showed that Selden anticipated an unfavourable reaction to his denial of divine right of tithes. He was not disappointed. The work was suppressed and Selden was forced to apologize for having given offense-- and the book was withdrawn from circulation. His work was much studied: this copy with early marginalia: "by this Historie the Right of tithing belong not to ye profession of ye Canonist Civilian or Divine but with Lawyers." the last three words hastily crossed out. <br> <br>Early owners include London Antiquary Thomas Bryan Richards whose extensive Library was sold by King & Lochée in 1812. . Contemporary dark green cloth expertly rebacked with the original cases repaired and new endpapers of Bemboka hand-made paper. The original spines have been re-laid together with the original paper title label. A very pleasing copy of a scarce set. 25.5 x 16cm. Hao-ch'iu chuan "The pleasing history" or "The fortunate union" is a Chinese "caizi jiaren" talent and beauty novel published in the 17th Century. The author is known only under the name "Man of the Teaching of Names" The identity of the author and exact date of publishing are not known. According to Philippe Postel author of "Les Traductions Françaises du Haoqiu Zhuan" the most commonly stated date of authorship is 1683 at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. <br> <br>The translator John Francis Davis was Governor of Hong Kong in the period 1844 - 48. At the beginning of his career he served on Lord Amherst's Mission to China and after spending the best part of his career in the service of the East India Company he succeeded Lord Pottinger as Governor of Hong Kong. A scholarly man he did not fit into this role his knowledge and appreciation of Chinese culture and life being very unpopular with the European community. The frostiness was such that when he finally departed Hong Kong the European community showed their displeasure by not acknowledging his departure in any way. . Oriental Translation Fund. hardcover
