Sir Henry Knollys (1840-1930) served as a major in the Royal Artillery, later became private secretary to King Edward's daughter Maud, queen of Norway. He was a descendant to a distinguished British family. Sir Francis Knollys (1514-1596) was an English statesman, became a member of parliament in 1542 and was knighted in 1547. His father, Robert Knollys, a courtier in the service of both Henry VII and Henry VIII. Sir Francis's three sons were all courtiers and served Queen Mary in parliament or in the field. Henry Knollys published extensively; on "English Life in China" he said: "The statements contained in this book have, at all events, the advantage of having been recorded on the spot, and at the time when they were originally deduced. Taken down day by day in shorthand, I venture to hope that the opinions may possess the freshness, sometimes so conductive to accuracy, of first impressions; while the authenticity of the facts has been safe-guarded by subsequent careful revision." 1913168261London: War Office 1913. Modernity's steel rails The 1913 version of a map that was issued periodically throughout the 1910s. Drawn and printed at the Ordnance Survey Office in Southampton it highlights railways built in progress and proposed and two inset maps show links to Beijing and in Manchuria. A column of notes gives gauges mileages and notes on construction. The map shows that at the onset of Republican rule China had around a dozen lines in progress or planned - including a stretch linking Hankou to Canton - to complement the main lines connecting Beijing to Hankou Shanghai and Mukden. The side notes address the complexity of the railway network's governance and administration - lines were variously built managed and worked by combinations of foreign and Chinese organizations. Colour lithographed map 740 x 990 mm. Sometime folded occasional scuffing and edge toning two panels on verso browned: a very good example. unknown

1945175494China: 1945. A rare series of photographs taken after Japan's unconditional surrender when the OSS launched eight operational missions to rescue POWS across east and south-east Asia. Two of the images show Lee Beom-Seok a resistance fighter and the first prime minister of South Korea who worked closely with OSS personnel in China. The first images capture a team of US soldiers disembarking from a C47 cargo plane. In one photograph taken at night Lee stands alongside soldiers in the uniform of Chiang Kai-Shek's National Revolution Army. A long series of photographs shows smiling internees and their liberators while two at the end of the album show OSS personnel in discussion. At least one photograph appears to show Clyde Bailey Sargent 1909-1981 a sinologist who joined the OSS as a civilian and undertook intelligence-gathering missions in China and India. Later in the war he served with the Flying Tigers in a military capacity joining the CIA after 1945. His short obituary is pasted on the inner rear cover. Square octavo photo album. Original card covers white plastic spiral binding housing 24 gelatin silver photographs each c. 95 x 105 mm in wallets. Photographs somewhat sunned and toned: very good. unknown
