The author was an attorney and Principal of the Buffalo Classical School. He traveled to Oregon Washington Alaska primarily Sitka and British Columbia in 1888 reporting back in a series of articles for his local newspaper the Commercial Advertiser. This is their first appearance in book form. Includes interesting letters on indigenous crafts in Alaska the Russian population in the Sitka area and the Sitka mission along with sketches of Portland Astoria and the Puget Sound region. The islands were the home of Alexander Selkirk a sailor marooned there in the early 1700s an event which may have served as the inspiration for 'Robinson Crusoe'. Selkirk was put off his vessel by a British captain and partner with Capt. William Dampier on a buccaneering expedition in search of Spanish vessels carrying gold. With an inset view of the northeast coast of the island at the top of the map. With compass rose rhumb lines and ornate cartouche.<br /> <br /> Bellin 1703 - 1772 one of the most noted French mapmakers of the 18th century was named the hydrographer chief cartographer to the French Navy and later the Official Hydrographer to the French King.<br /> <br /> One vertical fold 11 1/2 x 8 1/4". On the right side of the map are all the ports visited along with a brief sketch of each. Faint stain on ship. <br /><br />Major General Arthur Edward Potts 1890-1983 was a Canadian general officer active in both world wars. In July 1940 Potts was promoted to brigadier and took over the command of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade. He led the brigade in Operation Gauntlet the commando raid at Spitsbergen intended to deny Germany the coal mining and shipping infrastructure equipment and stores on the island. "Force 111" consisted of two battalions of the brigade. Afterwards Potts was transferred to the Pacific shores of British Columbia and in 1943 was appointed commander of Military District 2 in Toronto.</p>

Ultimately he would publish seven books over the years the final one being "Vaqueros and Buckaroos" in 1979. Includes a map of the Apache Trail on the Southern Pacific Sunset Route a full page illustration of the route a map of the Southern Pacific lines and colorful illustrations on each page. Wraps have 2.5 inch tears along two of the folds and light wear. Good condition. The Apache Trail is a 120 mile route from present day Globe to Phoenix Arizona that was used first by the Apache to navigate through the Superstition Mountains then as a stagecoach route and finally as a scenic auto road for tourists such as those traveling with the Southern Pacific. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 20 pp . 191017192Southern Pacific Railroad. Good. 1910-1940. Hardcover. The ledgers are worn with tape reinforcing the spines. Misc. Inserted papers loose with dates from1906 to the 1944. Pages of blueprints of items to be made for the railroad signs etc. handwritten notes of lumber to be ordered for various projects. One ledger has the date 1916 written in the front on the fep. That volume is a "car inspector's record book". The listings give car numbers and condition or repairs; the dates run up to 1922. The second ledger is mostly empty with a lot of pretty boring blueprints inserted loose. In the back are loose pages of contracts for work with detailed decriptions and specifications written in a very neat hand. These pages are not dated but the pages themselves were printed in 1896 and there is a receipt tipped onto one page dated 1899. Not the most historically significant collection but should be pretty fun for an S. P. Fan. Sorry I don't have pictures. Sold as-is what-it-is. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall .
