18030002561Good. 1803. On offer is a superb original 1803 - 1805 manuscript cypher and navigation book handwritten by a young midshipman James Maurice Shipton aboard the noted HMS Thunderer a ship forever in the history books as the ship that spotted the emerging Spanish fleet and thusly began the Battle of Trafalgar and the demise of Britain's enemies and sadly the hero of the day Lord Horatio Nelson. Notably Thunderer also took part in the Glorious 1st of June Battle against the French in 1794. James Maurice Shipton who would one day captain his own ship and reap accolades created this book while theThunderer worked blockade duty along the French coast. Mere months later the ship would engage in the Battle of Trafalgar and the decisive engagement by the British would end the rule of the French despot and dictator Napoleon Bonaparte. Included are a number of letters from archivists and historians providing background info on Shipton. The book is in wonderful condition the vellum save for some soiling is better than good and the interior as well. AN UNPARALLELED COLLECTION OF ILLUSTRATED BOOKS BY ONE OF THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED BOOK ARTISTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY. ALL OF THESE BOOKS ARE ILLUSTRATED WITH ORIGINAL COPPER ENGRAVINGS / ETCHINGS /AQUATINTS / ROULETTES. Maurice Leroy, like many other illustrators of his time, specialized in lightly erotic depictions of feminine beauty. Unlike virtually all the other illustrators of his time, however, he infused tremendous imagination into his prints, and demonstrated absolute mastery of all the major techniques of draftsmanship and copper engraving. The ten books in this collection all come from the height of his career, and most of them are SPECIAL COPIES WITH ADDITIONAL SUITES OF THE PRINTS AND/OR ORIGINAL DRAWINGS. (1) Le Diable amoureux, by Cazotte. One of only a few copies with the prints beautifully illuminated by hand; (2) Another copy of the same, one of 127 copies with a remarque suite; (3) Le malheureux petit Voyage, by Soulages. One of only 25 copies (tete) with an original drawing used for one of the illustrations (signed), a second suite in color, a suite in black, and a second suite of the wood-engraved decorations by Poilliot. Beautifully bound in full leather with original color drawings by Leroy on both covers; (4) La Belle sans chemise, ou Eve ressuscitee. A unique artist's copy, with a stunning original color drawing (signed), a remarque suite, and four (likely unique) color separation proofs; (5) Le bon Plaisir, by Henri de Regnier. One of 36 copies (tete) with an original color drawing used for one of the illustrations (signed), a remarque suite in color, and a remarque suite in black; (6) L'Eloge de la folie, by Erasmus. One of 75 copies with a remarque suite and the "planche refusee"; (7) Le roman de Tristan et Iseut. One of 24 copies with two suites of the etchings and an original watercolor; (8-10) Three other limited-edition books with original prints. 4tos. Except for the bound volume (described above), all loose as issued in board chemises and slipcases. One slipcase damaged, else FINE AND BRIGHT, INSIDE AND OUT. A monumental collection, a testament to the artist's varied and profound talent. OVER 1,000 PRINTS IN ALL.

EXE-171Paris, Librairie de l'Art indépendant, 1893. In-4° carré, broché. Edition originale. 1945483521945. Fine. 1945 22 x 11.50 cm 8 feuillets foliotés Autograph manuscript by the author of 16 octavo pages published in number 8 August 1945 of L'Arche under the title: Some Reflections on Surrealism. Complete recto-verso manuscript with very dense writing containing numerous deletions corrections and additions. Some Reflections on Surrealism forms the first important text that Maurice Blanchot devoted to André Breton's movement. He rehabilitates surrealism which placed at the center of its activity the question of language and experience - aspects that could not leave Blanchot indifferent - without forgetting to make the following observations: it carries within it a part of failure and its ""situation . remains ambiguous"". Now increasingly asserting his aesthetic positions Blanchot fully recognizes the poetic and experimental value of automatic writing for its very radicalism: ""Automatic writing is . a war machine against reflection and language. It is destined to humiliate human pride particularly in the form that traditional culture has given it. But in reality it is itself a proud aspiration to a mode of knowledge and it has opened to words a new unlimited credit."" Blanchot continues his reflection and insists on the questionings of surrealist writers and poets regarding discourse: ""Surrealism was haunted by this idea: that there was that there had to be a moment . when language was not discourse but reality itself without however ceasing to be the proper reality of language . The surrealists drew brilliant literary consequences from this 'discovery' but for language the effects are more ambiguous and more varied. In this domain they still seem above all to be destroyers. They are unleashed against discourse; they withdraw from it the right to signify something; as a means of social of precise designation they break it ferociously. Language appears somewhat alone annihilated or sacrificed but humiliated. In reality it is a matter of something quite different and even the contrary: language disappears as instrument but that is because it has become subject. Through automatic writing it has benefited from the highest promotion ."" The text would be reprinted in The Work of Fire 1949 not without Blanchot having taken care to attenuate the reservations he expressed in the initial article. First important monographic study devoted by Maurice Blanchot to the question of surrealist language. unknown

In exemplary original condition. 9 carat gold matchbox 15 gr; 45 x 30 mm; monogrammed on the back with interwoven letters "M.A.C."

A remarkable memento of the pioneer Jewish educator Maurice Moses Abraham Cohen 1851-1923. Objects from the Australian Jewish community at the start of the 20th century prior to the great waves of Jewish immigration are very scarce. The monogrammed initials on this attractive presentation piece identify it as a gift from the Sydney Jewish Sabbath School to M.A. Cohen the School's first principal.

Born in Ukraine to a Sephardic family Cohen was a talented linguist. Educated in England after spells in India and Afghanistan he travelled to Australia in 1887 where he took up a role as the first headmaster of the Jewish Sunday School just then established in Sydney within the Great Synagogue Australia's finest synagogue. He went on to become head of the NSW Jewish Board of Education. At one time he was editor of Sydney's first Jewish weekly newspaper the Australian Jewish Weekly as well as a lecturer on Hebrew at a number of theological colleges in Australia.

Cohen was one of the first European Australians to call attention to the plight of the Australian Aboriginal peoples and to argue for compensation and land rights even risking his position as editor of the Australian Hebrew Newspaper with his fiery opinion pieces on the subject. He also argued for increased non-discriminatory immigration drawing from all cultures and vehemently opposed the White Australia Policy. It was to be a production of great magnificence designed by Léon Bakst and the first time the typically Russian full-length ballet in five scenes would be performed in England.
