Très bel exemplaire, très frais ( Photographies sur demande / We can send pictures of this book on simple request )

elala6201Philadelphia: Innes & Sons 1901. First Edition Limited to 500 copies signed by the Author. A classic and influential work in the modern study of mystical experience by an important Canadian progressive psychiatrist. Bucke's theory which was partly based on his own experience involved three stages in the development of consciousness: the simple consciousness of animals the normal self-consciousness of man encompassing reason imagination etc. and cosmic consciousness the next stage of human mental development where man feels a profound mystical sense of inter-connectedness with the universe. Bucke studied medicine at Montreal and in 1877 became head of the provincial Asylum for the Insane in London Ontario a position he held for most of the remainder of his life. He believed in non-restraint social contact and normalization of routines in the institution and introduced organized activities that would now be described as occupational therapy. Bucke became a close friend and admirer of the American poet Walt Whitman whose biography he wrote and for whom he acted as a literary executor. Bib. 004987Paris: Agence Générale de Publicité et de PropagandePrinter: E. Desfosses. Wraps. Brochure. Near Fine. N.d. circa 1930. 8vo. 24.5 by 18.5 cm. Unpaginated 31 leaves all of a weighty card stock or over 60 pages about half with color plates we count 31 but one can quibble about whether one or two of them so qualify. Eleven of these are non-product illustrations -- attempts to capture concepts or abstractions -- the balance being exquisite depictions of the company's fine perfume bottles. The catalogue exudes an unalloyed dreamy luxury in every respects as befits high-end perfume marketing. Cassandre a name adopted by the Ukrainian-born Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron 1901-1968 -- his parents were French -- was a highly celebrated commercial artist theatrical designer magazine illustrator and poster artist. He worked heavily with the prestige printer Draeger as well as the couturier Lucien Lelong and others. In time he was awarded the French Legion of Honor. Lelong was a top Parisian couturier from the twenties til his retirement in the late forties. He was himself not a designer but rather relied on a stable of designers and among his proteges was Christian Dior. As this catalogue also shows dress designers were branching out into fragrances for a long time; this catalogue predates the creation of Chanel No. 5 by a few years. Light wear to the wraps -- a minor closed tear along the upper joint and some minor wrinkling or creasing to the cover paper. Otherwise clean and fresh.

Agence Générale de Publicité et de PropagandePrinter: E. Desfosses. paperback books
194540319Paris: NP 1945. Original photographs. Original photographs. vg. French photographer Maurice Georges Chanu's "Avant. Pendant. Après." is a striking photographic triptych depicting the transformation of a roast chicken before during and after a meal.

Each matted print measures 11 1/2 x 9 1/4" captioned mount: 13 3/4 x 11 3/8"; mat: 17 1/8 x 14 3/4" with photographer's stamp at recto of mount as well as handwritten negative number and technical information.

Captions in French. Silver gelatin prints mounts and mats in very good condition. About the photographer: Born in France and active from the 1930s through the 1950s Maurice George Chanu worked primarily in Paris. In 1948 he put together a photo album to illustrate the lyrics of the popular French song "La Seine" which won the Grand Prix de la Chanson Francaise in 1948. Chanu's work echoes several other photographers including Brassai's "Paris Nuit" work and Jindrich Styrsky's signage and posters but he created his own unique view of the world - no matter that it was limited primarily to Paris as was Atget's before him. Chanu's strong modernist eye captured Paris and its winding river the Seine from the sparkling light of dawn to work-a-day activities and finally the romantic evening calm. Chanu worked with a 4 x 5 camera with Dager lens often using magnesium flares to light his night shots. Chanu was also known to paint landscapes. The photographer/artist was also an inventor of optical instruments including a scope and something called an épiscope comparator which was used by police for reading fingerprints. Chanu was very active in the photographic salons of France and abroad. NP unknown
