On offer is an original scrapbook written and compiled by Marie Kathryn Zak a soon-to-be very well-known travel writer during the 1950s and '60s. A graduate of St. Louis University she worked for The Automobile Club World Wide Travel Service wrote a column called "Travel Talk" for a local newspaper and had a very close and religious family life. This scrapbook details her trip in July 1950 with 200 other St. Louis Sodalist to Rome Fatima Portugal and Lourdes France on the Queen's Work Holy Year pilgrimage. It includes newspaper articles one of which is about the S.S. Liguria a ship they were on avoiding the perils of a hurricane telegrams cards stickers receipts pictures and numerous postcards. In very good shape. With 56 folding plates. A scarce work. Not in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and numerous other great libraries. Contemporary marbled sheep spine in 6 decorated compartments. The work consists of a commentary on the notes and propositions left by Marechal de Saxe. Engraved printer's device on the title depicting a winged Fama who holds her trumpet; the motto reads: 'Utilitate Bonarum Artium'; at her feet marble fragments of inscriptions; from the trumpet hangs a banner with the initials of the proud sponsor Venanzio Monaldini. Facsimile inscriptions throughout. Short title in ink on the back Condition: Some wear to the extremes. Some slight foxing. French title inscribed by a contemporary hand. Title slightly foxed Note: Sommervogel ascribes 161 works to the prolific Italian scholar and Jesuit Francesco Antonio Zaccaria or Zacharias 1714-1795. He published on church history theology canon law but also on archaeology and Italian literature. He succeeded as librarian and archivist of the Ducal library of Modena the famous historian Muratori. Later he was appointed professor of church history at the Sapienza University of Rome. § The 18th century saw a deepening of the science of epigraphy; much emphasis was laid on the importance of historical sources such as inscriptions and coins. There was a demand for well edited and trustworthy collections and manuals. With his 'Istituzione' Zaccaria published a manual devided into 3 books: 1: 'Del pregio e dell'eccellenza delle latine iscrizioni' 2: 'Della tessitura delle antiche iscrizioni' 3: 'Delle intelligenza delle iscrizioni' and illuminated with numerous examples. The manual saw a second edition in 1793 and was also translated into Spanish; Zaccaria wrote also a manual on numismatics Collation: a8 b12 A-Q8 R10 S-2I8 2K10. First and only edition of this extremely rare bibliography of books printed by Francesco Marcolini da Forli. 91 pp leaf of errata and additions this leaf is often missing. A well-documented bibliographical notice by Raffaele de Minicis 40 pp. 89 footnotes is followed by an extensive bibliography 51 pp. in which dozens of editions are described in great detail. THIS IS APPARENTLY THE AUTHOR'S PERSONAL COPY: there are about 30 marginal notes and corrections sometimes quite extensive with proofreading marks in a contemporary hand. In some of these notes the annotator refers to specific observations in the printed text as his own. Printed on good wove paper. 8vo. Attractively bound in recent cloth original wraps bound in.
