1856Cat353Boston Massachusetts: Oliver Ditson & Co 1856. Lithographed sheet music title page after a photograph by Turner & Cutting. Folio. Some trimming and edge wear; image strong; good to very good. An early and scarce lithographic design by Winslow Homer executed during his apprenticeship at J. H. Bufford & Co. and among a small group of sheet music illustrations from his formative period. The image commemorates the widely publicized wager made by journalist and political figure Benjamin Perley Poore during the heated 1856 Massachusetts elections which were shaped by the collapse of the Whigs and the rise of the Republicans. Poore backing one slate generally identified with the Democratic or anti-Republican interest agreed that if his side lost he would wheel a barrel of apples from his home in West Newbury to Boston; upon defeat he fulfilled the pledge completing the roughly thirty-six-mile journey to considerable public attention. Homer’s composition after a now-lost photograph by Turner & Cutting shows Poore mid-route with the barrel mounted in a wheelbarrow accompanied by amused onlookers and a roadside sign indicating Boston. The complete 12 issue run of this seminal folksong journal published 1930-1937 from the collection of noted folklorist Frank A. Hoffmann his folk music-inspired bookplate front paste down. Bound in green cloth with two black leather labels at spine lettered in gilt Near Fine staining to rear board and rear paste down the bulletins are all Fine. The Folk-Song Society was founded by Phillips Barry American academic and collector of traditional folk ballads in New England in 1930 and he edited this journal until his death in 1937. Tipped in at rear end page is the author's original manuscript in black ink of his recording of the songs Doo Me Ama and The Female Smuggler which is printed in facsimile in the book at page 4 where Finger states at bottom page 3 and top of p. 4 "Such notes as I made were made furtively and as this book aims to set forth things correctly by way of showing how I made my notes in places where blank paper was scarce here is a facsimile." And indeed the music for those two songs was written on the back of a letter 6' x 7 3/4" with ragged edges dated 10 Mars. March '90 1890 presumably sent to Finger by an unknown writer which includes part of the lyrics for the French folksong Les Trois Hussards. Additionally laid in is a publisher's 3 1/4' x 5 1/2' advertising card for the book The Incredible Marquis : Alexander Dumas by Herbert Goodman. In 1889 at age twenty Finger began to travel extensively visiting first Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia. In Chapter One at ps. 15-20 he starts the book with his description of recording these two songs - "Aboard the three-master "The Fairy Queen" .Bill Curzon who was a sailor of the old school sang a song called Doo Me Ama a ballad with a faint Rabelaisian flavour about it ". Boldly signed by Herbert Hoover and the author Clarence Budington Kelland on the dedication page. Additionally signed by another member of the Bohemian Club. In very good condition with light rubbing and toning. Founded in 1872 from a regular meeting of journalists artists and musicians The Bohemian Club soon developed into a private men's-only club offering wider membership to businessmen entrepreneurs university presidents and military commanders. Every year the club hosts a two-week-long camp retreat at Bohemian Grove which is notable for its illustrious guest list and its eclectic Cremation of Care ceremony which mockingly burns an effigy of "Care" the normal woes of life with grand pageantry pyrotechnics and brilliant costumes all done at the edge of a lake and at the base of a forty-foot concrete owl statue. The Grove Play is an annual theatrical production written produced and performed by and for Bohemian Club members and staged outdoors in California at the Bohemian Grove each summer. 39656This Russian-born American composer ended up in France after the Russian Revolution where he performed and composed prolifically -- symphonies orchestral pieces piano concertos operas ballet and choral music; post-WW2 he emigrated to Chicago where he taught and composed. Remarkably beautiful ALS 1p 6" X 11" Vanves France n.y. likely early 1930s. Near fine. On a lovely heavy tannish tissue paper Tcherepnine pens in his usual miniscule script and black ink a note to unidentified "Cher ami" in French referring to the first performance of his new work "Suite georgienne" and the Salle de l'ancienne Conservatoire in Paris; he switches to English briefly near the close when noting trying to reach someone by telephone "but was unsuccessfull!" This handsome note occupies only a small central portion at the right margin much of this sheet being filled with an extraordinary partly hand-drawn and partly inkstamped color drawing presumably Japanese depicting a monkey descending the branches of a tree bearing numerous orange flowers against a pale blue background. Wonderfully executed in pale soft colors. At lower right and lower left are small inkstamped insignias that we assume indicate the artist. A truly exceptional letter from the young composer. unknown

Bound in marbled boards backed with a brown calf spine with a leather title label and gilt rules on the spine. The covers are heavily rubbed with substantial wear to the corners. The leather is splitting at the top and bottom of the front joint and the gilt title has rubbed away. Title pages 1-40 1 title pages 41-80 1 title and pages 1-36. The second book is lacking pages 55-58 "The Bottle". Illustrated with 3 engraved title pages and engraved music with lyrics. The front hinge is cracked. An early owners name is penned at the top of the front pastedown with another owner's name penned at the top of each title page. Remnants of a red wax seal adhere to the front endpaper. Early annotations are penned in ink on the verso of the front endpaper and lyrics are penciled on the rear blank. Tears and damage to the first title page show evidence of early repair with paper & paste. An annotation on the second title page has been crudely crossed out with ink and there is a long tear to the bottom inner edge of the third title. There is some occasional soiling throughout with occasional short tears to the edges which do not affect the contents. <p>Three books in one volume as issued each with its own title page. The pagination is continuous through books one and two.<p>The work includes 59 of 60 songs with engraved music & lyrics lacking the one entitled "The Bottle".<p>Included among the songs are "A Tight Irish Boy" "Kittle of Coleraine" "Murphy Delany" "Sprig of Shillelah" "The Bold Dragoon" "The Corsican Fairy" "Fiddle dum dee" "Love sick Frog" "Lundun is the Devil" etc.<p>RARE. A four-page program with the theatre's name on the cover page with "Henry Cowell in a Program of his own compositions" printed in green opposite the program of works. A "Calendar" of forthcoming performances is printed on the last page. Folded both vertically and horizontally with a tear along the front edge of the folds and creasing to the front edge of the second leaf. "All Cowell" is penned in red at the top of the cover page. Good.</p><p>A friend has inscribed the program with an apology on the second page "Dear Henry I have a miserable headache and am sorry indeed not to be able to see you to-night. Could you come to see me before you leave Carmel. Sincerely B. Marrell ".</p><p>Together with 2 photographs of Henry Cowell by Edward Weston. Both are the same image although of differing sizes portraying Henry Cowell in three-quarter profile from the shoulders up attired in what appears to be a satin like jacket over a dark shirt. One of the photographs measures 6-1/2 inches high by 4-3/4 inches wide and the other smaller image measures 3-1/2 inches high by 2-3/4 inches wide. "Photo by Edward Weston about 1930" is penciled on the verso of the smaller photo. The photographs are housed in a period acetate sleeve identifying the portraits as dating from about 1925. The actual date of the printing of the photographs is unknown.</p><p>The American photographer Edward Weston 1886-1958 settled in Carmel in 1929.</p><p>Built by Edward G. A scarce and possibly a first printing of James A. Bland’s “In the Evening by the Moonlight†published as part of the Great Ethiopian Songs series by Hitchcock’s Music Store on Sixth Avenue in New York City. H.J. Weyman and the Popular Music Company also published editions of the song one with a slight title variation in 1880 both in New York City. The song would become one of the most famous of the seven hundred or so that Bland would eventually write and be performed by Nina Simone into the twentieth century. Subjects include the National Barn Dance Gang the 101 Ranch Boys the Carolina Sweethearts the Bar X Cowboys Gene Autry and the Ranch Riders and the Novelty Boys and Cora Deane. The scrapbooker seems to have been a serious fan of Andy Reynolds from the 101 Ranch Boys as many photographs in the scrapbook are portraits of him. The band hailed from Kansas City Kansas and was active in the 1930s playing regularly on WSBA in York Pennsylvania. The photos of the Novelty Boys and a musician called “Willie Whistleâ€â€”not the clown of the same name—are signed. Of interest to historians and fans of country western music. unknown
1940List3664New York: W.C. Handy 1940. Folio sheet music 8 pp. Inscribed to Noble Sissle and signed by both J. Russel Robinson and W. C. Handy. Excellent condition. The sheet music for one of the foundational publications of American blues inscribed to Noble Sissle. Written by W. C. Handy with collaborator J. Russel Robinson and first issued in 1912 “The Memphis Blues Or Mr. Crump†is widely considered one of the first blues compositions to achieve broad popularity through commercial sheet music. The piece originated as a campaign song for Memphis political figure Edward H. “Boss†Crump but was quickly adapted for popular use. <br /> Sissle 1889–1975 later known for the landmark Broadway musical Shuffle Along 1921 with Eubie Blake was active in Black theatrical and orchestral music during the 1910s and 1920s and performed a number of Handy’s compositions. Sissle and Handy remained connected professionally over their careers. Sissle and his orchestra performed and recorded Handy’s “St. Louis Blues†and he participated in recordings of Handy’s “Loveless Love†beginning in the early 1920s and again in later revival recordings during the 1930s. In later decades Sissle and Blake also involved Handy in projects celebrating early Black musical theatre and blues including demonstrations and recordings prepared for a proposed revival of Shuffle Along in 1950. Their collaborations frequently centered on presenting Handy’s blues compositions in concert and recording contexts that highlighted the development of Black popular music. The song “Memphis Blues†was also quite significant in Sissle’s position as vocalist and drum major in the regimental band of the 369th Infantry Regiment during the First World War where he performed with James Reese Europe. Sissle appeared as one of the band’s featured singers and helped present the group’s popular repertoire “Memphis Blues†being one of their core pieces. This inscription happened after 1940 per the copyright renewal note on the sheet which we used to date it. Overall a fantastic association linking Handy Robinson and Sissle early in their careers. 1855List3668New York: Horace Waters 1855. Sheet music measuring 10 ¾ x 14 ¼ inches 6 pp. Foxed with wear to edges; very good to excellent. A scarce Hutchinson Family sheet published in 1855 with an abolition theme. The song goes in part:<br /> <br /> “The captive now begins to rise and burst his chains asunder While Politicians stand aghast in anxious fear and wonder. No longer shall the bondman sigh beneath the galling fetters He sees the Dan of Freedom nigh and reads the golden letters…†<br /> <br /> It also discusses alcohol within a larger theme of good triumphing over evil. The song is included in some songsters but this standalone version is quite uncommon with one copy held at Dartmouth. In 1855 the Hutchinson Family Singers continued extensive touring across the northeastern United States presenting concert programs that combined abolitionist songs temperance material and political commentary aligned with reform movements. They had embraced abolitionism as a cause about a decade earlier with a string of compositions including “Get Off the Track†and “The Bereaved Slave Mother.â€. Horace Waters unknown

Two apparently unrecorded musical scores issued by Saint Germain Press at the height of the I AM Activity the metaphysical religious movement founded by Guy Ballard writing as “Godfre Ray King†and later led by his wife Edna Anne Wheeler Ballard. Music occupied a central role in I AM devotional practice where hymns and affirmational songs functioned as instruments of spiritual alignment intended to invoke divine “Light†and facilitate communion with Ascended Masters particularly the figure of Saint Germain. Blending Theosophy New Thought and American esoteric Christianity such compositions were likely performed in ceremonial services instructional classes and regional conclaves that combined ritual affirmation with musical participation. These sheets were part of the movement’s broader effort to disseminate spiritual teachings through accessible devotional media linking printed text spoken decree and musical performance within a unified metaphysical practice.<br /> <br /> The inscription by Edna Ballard adds notable historical significance. Following Guy Ballard’s death in 1939 Edna assumed leadership of the movement and became one of its principal public voices guiding the organization through both rapid expansion and intense federal scrutiny culminating in United States v. Ballard 1944 a landmark Supreme Court case addressing the limits of judicial inquiry into religious belief. Johnson had great success as a lyricist early in the century but found chamged tastes when he attempted a return to song-writing in 1914. He did successfully translate the libretto for this opera which the Metropolitan Opera performed in 1916. Granados the Spanish Romantic composer of the piano pieces from which this opera was adapted attended the premiere but drowned in the English channel upon his return to Europe when a German submarine torpedoed the boat on which Granados was travelling. The libretto appears throughout the music in this edition with Granados's Spanish text immediately above Johnson's English translation. The libretto was also published separately by Schirmer in 1915 as a smaller-format 42-page pamphlet in their series of opera-librettos with Granados's Spanish text and Johnson's English translation appearing side by side in separate columns.
