Organist and composer Heinrich Christoph Zeuner 1795-1857 was born in Saxony but spent most of his career in Boston where he was associated with the Handel and Haydn Society from 1830 to 1837 and then Philadelphia where he was organist first at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and later at Arch Street Presbyterian Church. Extremely scarce. In Good Condition: wrappers are lightly soiled and separating along the spines; old dampstaining in Part I primarily along upper edge of pages and in Part II along gutter; a few pencil marks in margins; otherwise clean and solid. 1960List3336Nebraska and Minnesota: multiple publishers 1960. Ten posters mainly measuring approximately 14 x 21 ½ inches with some smaller. Many with slight damage and wear to edges all having been stored in tubes; bright and attractive; overall very good to excellent. Territory bands were dance bands that toured around particular regions of the US. Usually swing or big band jazz groups they mostly covered popular songs playing in smaller cities and towns that nationally touring groups would skip. Offered here is a collection of ten posters for territory bands from Nebraska dating from about the 1930s or 1940s to the 1960s. Unusually for territory bands these groups are mainly composed of white musicians and represent genres including rock ‘n’ roll and polka the latter of which was popular in Nebraska due to the state’s concentration of Czech and German immigrants.<br /> <br /> Bands in the collection include International Polka Association Hall of Fame inductee Ernie Kucera whose orchestra played from 1942 to 1995; fellow Czech polka player Adolph Urbanovsky’s Bohemian Orchestra; Don Shaw’s “Top 40†Dance Band and Entertainers which covered top 40 tracks in the 1950s; Little Joe and the Ramrods an early 1960s rock ‘n’ roll group; and the Lee Barron Orchestra. The top edge of the dust jacket is chipped with several tears. 286 & 1 pages illustrated with a portrait frontispiece several pages of illustrations from photographs including many full-page and textual illustrations of music staves. There are a couple of brown stains to the front endpaper one of which touches on the last letter of Lenny's signature. There are additional light brown stains to the top edge of the dedication and contents pages. Very good.</p><p>First edition first printing.</p><p>Inscribed & signed by Leonard Bernstein to Harold Gromberg the principal oboist of the New York Philharmonic "For Harold with Love and all my wishes for a happy 1967 - Lenny B".</p><p>The principal first or solo oboist of the New York Philharmonic orchestra from 1943 through 1977 Harold Gromberg 1916-1985 and his brother studied with the father of American oboe playing Marcel Tabuteau at the Curtis Institute of Music. He joined the New York Philharmonic after playing with the National Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto & St. Louis Symphonies. Presentation inscribed by Virginia Lee Burton "Greetings to the ‘Caner’ from Virginia Lee Burton." Near fine in the original dust jacket with some wear and tear. Anne Malcolmson Grace Castagnetta and Caldecott medalist Virginia Lee Burton joined forces in 1947 to produce the definitive edition of The Song of Robin Hood. Their triumphant achievement was one of the most distinctive presentations of the legend ever published and it received a Caldecott Honor Medal in 1948. Through meticulous research and unfailing perseverance Anne Malcolmson rediscovered fifteen of the original ballads of Robin Hood; Grace Castagnetta adapted them to modern musical notation. 1968169971New York: Robert Cherin Productions 1968. Revised script for the off-Broadway 1968 staging of the 1967 musical seen here under the alternate title "Ballad for a Firing Squad." Copy belonging to playwright Jerome Coopersmith with his name in manuscript ink on the title page and his annotations in manuscript pencil throughout.<br /> <br /> Loosely based on the life of undercover German spy and exotic dancer Mata Hari about a French intelligence officer's quest to expose Hari's treachery falling in love with her in the process.<br /> <br /> The play was originally staged in 1967 receiving a pre-Broadway tryout at the National Theatre in Washington DC but the Broadway production was canceled after the show was met with negative reviews. It was then staged off-Broadway in 1968 at the Theatre de Lys then known as the Lucille Lortel Theater under the new title "Ballad for a Firing Squad" only running for 15 performances. In 1996 the show was revived at the York Theatre under the original title but unfortunately met with a similar fate to its predecessors. <br /> <br /> Black Studio Duplicating Service titled wrappers. Title page present dated August 1968 noted as Revised with credits for Coopersmith and playwrights Martin Charnin and Edward Thomas. 91 leaves with last page of text numbered 2-7-29. The title pages states that this musical was the fifth musical production put on by The Princess Theatre. Dorothy Parker was a fan of the production and of the writing team in general writing in Vanity Fair "Wodehouse and Bolton and Kern are my favorite indoor sport . I like the way they go about a musical comedy . I like the way the action slides casually into the songs . I like the deft rhyming of the song that is always sung in the last act by two comedians and one comedienne. And oh how do I like Jerome Kern's music – those nice soft polite little tunes that always make me wish I'd been a better girl. And all these things are even more so in Oh Lady! Apparently a first-person draft of information for an appeal by the oldest surviving member from the inception of the group for a stipend. Begins 'Depuis le commencement de l'an 1760 que j'ai ete recu a la Musique du Roi j'ai été en exercice jusqu'en 1792 avec 222. sujets qui s'y sous <> dont 40 vivant encore au 18 Janvier 1815. .'. There follow a 'Liste des Morts' grouped under office or instrument and a one with dates of 'Musiciens du Roi vivante au 1er. Janvier 1815.' Also a list of 'Musiciens de la Chambre' dead since 1761. The numerical 'Resultas' are given with a short note in the first person on the exclusion from the list of the 'femmes du Cour de la Reine'. De Rohan's brief 'Apostile' approves the 'Doyen''s appeal 'a cause des services et de l'age'. One authority briefly explains the origins the Musique du Roi: 'Until 1761 the performance of sacred and secular music for the king were entrusted to separate bodies each part of the ecclesiastical and civil households. In 1761 both were merged and the position of grand-maître de la chapelle-musique was eliminated.'' [Circa 1815.] unknown

New York 1971.</p><p>Original script for the 1972 Broadway musical based on the life of Oscar Wilde. <strong>Annotated throughout by the composer.</strong> The show made its debut on November 16 at the Playhouse Theatre in New York and it ran for a brief 5 performances before closing on November 19 1972. Oscar Wilde was played by Richard Kneeland.</p><p>Script includes: Cast of Characters Synopsys of Scenes and a list of Musical Numbers. The narrative follows Wilde around London at society parties at home in bohemian Chelsea at the theatre and at homosexual dives. Characters include Lady Wilde Constance Lloyd Robert Ross Bosie Marquis of Queensberry as well as an assortment of stable boys and blackmailers. The musical explores Wilde's relationships with this wife and with his lover Lord Alfred Douglas and it is fearless and forthright in its portrayal of homosexual love and desire.</p><p>290x230mm mustard titled wrappers. Title page present noted in ink annotation as copy No. 23. 115 leaves with last page of text numbered 2-12-44. Xerographic duplication rectos only bound with two gold brads. A very good copy.</p><p><strong>Provenance:</strong> copy belonging to composer Addy O. Fieger with her name to title page and her annotations in pencil and ink throughout. Adeline Oppenheimer Fieger d. 1989 composed the campaign song for New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller in 1966 and an Off-Broadway jazz musical <em>Changes</em> in 1980. In late 1980s her songs were performed by many New York cabaret singers and were included in several cabaret shows.</p> paperback

Large newspaper advertisement for “Cultural Experience Weekend†at State University of New York Geneseo organized by the Activities Commission and Kuumba Weusi Watu presumably student interest groups. Speakers include Dr. Charles Hurst then President of Malcom X College in Chicago and Geneseo student Maurice Odine who would become a communications scholar and consultant to the United Nations. Performers include legendary soul-funk groups Kool and the Gang and The Isley Brothers and jazz artist Roy Ayers alongside the Rochester-based student dance troupe Bottom of the Bucket But… which had just finished a tour of New York State prisons. The Geneseo student newspaper Lamron described Bottom of the Bucket’s performance as “a dance that celebrates the cultural heritage of the Black man. Minimal soiling to covers and a single pinhole at the head edge penetrating all leaves else crisp and bright. This scarce ephemeral handout is primarily an advertising vehicle. Alongside a single-column unsigned review of Dylan's meteoric rise from folk singer to culture hero are ads for nightclubs and restaurants: El Gaucho Sorrento Hotel Ivar's Captain's Table Four Seas etc. The Curtain Call world tour was Dylan's first with an electric backing band.<p>Preserved in a clear archival pouch with acid free backing. An early phonograph-related sheet associated with the French soprano Marie Roze née Hippolyte Ponsin 1846–1926 whose participation in early demonstrations of Thomas Edison’s tinfoil phonograph was widely publicized in 1878. Contemporary reports identify Roze as the “celebrated prima donna†depicted singing into the phonograph in an engraving produced for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper New York April 20 1878 following a demonstration of the machine at Steinway Hall earlier that year. The same engraving was subsequently reused across multiple promotional formats including tickets to phonograph exhibitions advertising circulars and early phonograph-themed sheet music such as Phonograph. March Brillante.<br /> <br /> Related promotional material includes a poster advertising exhibitions of Edison’s new tinfoil phonograph in Toronto on May 28 1878 which employs the identical image of the prima donna singing into the apparatus beneath the heading “Edison’s Phonograph!†The poster announces daily demonstrations featuring singing speech and explanatory lectures illustrating the standardized visual language used to market the invention during its first year of public exhibition.1<br /> <br /> Roze an internationally known operatic soprano who later became Mrs. Henry Mapleson was connected with early phonograph demonstrations intended to showcase the recording and playback of trained vocal performance. The engraving linking her image to the machine circulated widely in print culture during 1878 appearing in illustrated journalism and promotional ephemera tied to touring exhibitions. Overall a very nice copy of what was an iconic image at the time. Blake was a highly prolific composer of over 5000 songs the most famous of which is Rock-a-Bye Baby.
