Hardcover. minimal shelfwear minor staining to ffep the only significant blemish; jacket spine has a few tiny puncture tears and some minor scuffing and there are a couple of itty-bitty nicks along the top of the front panel; a review copy with the original publisher's slip laid in. B&W photographs The book and lyrics no music of the Sondheim-Laurents "musical fable." Although roundly trounced by critics at the time of its Broadway opening in 1964 and consequently closing after just nine performances this work's reputation has endured and improved in recent years; it is now staged and/or revived with some regularity and is generally regarded as an influential modern classic. The original cast featured Angela Lansbury her first role in a stage musical James Frawley and Lee Remick. A so-called "Collectors' Edition" reprint was issued in 1976 and can be easily procured; but this the true first edition is quite scarce. . Random House hardcover
1850572844New York: Millet's Music Saloon 1850. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Folio. 6pp. Illustrated wrappers. Foxing and offsetting throughout the front wrapper partially detached towards the top of the spine notches in the spine from once being bound within an album still very good. For voice and piano. "Composed & Respectfully Dedicated to Miss Julia A. Buel." We found another version of this song titled "Brother Speak in Whispers Light Or The Brides Departure" published by A. & J.P. Ordway in Boston also in 1850 but the words are credited to Capt. Patten U.S.A. with music by Bernard Covert. This copy credited to Longfellow has a fourth verse not present in the Capt. Patten version. Stranger still we could not find these lyrics within any of Longfellow's writings. OCLC does not locate any holdings of this piece credited to Longfellow and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade. A fascinating musical mystery. Millet's Music Saloon unknown
1926146005London: Methuen & Co. Ltd 1926-1928. First edition set of songbooks from Milne's Christopher Robin and Pooh series. Quarto 3 volumes original tan half cloth illustrated with decorations by E. H. Shepard. In near fine condition with a gift inscription to the front free endpaper of each volume. "Although Alan Alexander Milne wrote novels short stories poetry and many plays for adults in addition to his work as assistant editor for Punch from 1906 to 1914 it is his writings for children that have captured the hearts of millions of people worldwide and granted Milne everlasting fame†Silvey 461. Milne wrote most of these poems at the request of friend and fellow poet Rose Fyleman who was planning a new children’s magazine. “On a rain-blighted holiday in Wales Milne escaped from the crowd of fellow guests to the summerhouse and for 11 days wrote a set of children’s verses one each day… ‘There on the other side of the lawn was a child with whom I had lived for three years his son Christopher Robin… and here within me were unforgettable memories of my own childhood.’ He added more verses when he got home enough for a book and allowed some to be published in advance in Punch†Carpenter & Prichard 351. Shepard a Punch staff artist at the time provided delightful line vignettes resulting in “a wonderful marriage of verse and vision. His delicately precise and fresh drawings had an instant appeal†DNB. When We Were Very Young is second issue as usual with page ix numbered. Methuen & Co. Ltd hardcover

36816Chicago: Illinois Sesquicentennial Commission n.y. Paperback. 4to. Stiff printed wrappers spiral bound. 118pp. Very good. Front outer wrapper only slightly age toned and edgeworn. Probable sole printing of this "Dramatic Cantata" commissioned by the State of Illinois in 1966 for its 1968 celebrations -- a mimeograph of Robinson's hand-drawn score penned on "Les Fulle Music Papers" music notation paper. This copy came from the collection of RALPH G. NEWMAN 1912-98 chairman of the Illinois Sesquicentennial Commission and founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop and in turn came from the collection of Newman's old friend CARL HAVERLIN 1899-1985 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar radio pioneer and president of Broadcast Music Inc. BMI whose collection he acquired upon Haverlin's death. This appears to be Haverlin's working copy. Page 12 bears a 2" X 2" slip tipped at lower right with note penned in what we believe to be Haverlin's hand: "STRANGER: one of the Indians speaks alright Tell the man what you've done with his land. Tell him. Tell him what you've been doing for him lately." Occasionally a line or two of music and lyrics are scribbled out in black ballpoint and here and there a phrase of lyrics are added which can be difficult to differentiate from the printed lyrics. Several mimeographed replacement pages have been lightly tipped in at several spots and a few mimeographed replacement pages are laid in loose. Separate from this oversize spiralbound book there is a mimeographed single-page "Instructions for INSERTS" page and a 21-page typescript stapled at upper left of additional material. How many copies of "Illinois People" were published in this homespun format is unknown; likely extremely few only enough to accomplish its 1968 premiere. Robinson 1910-91 was a folk singer and prolific composer often remembered for his labor anthem "Joe Hill." A unique copy of this very scarce score. Illinois Sesquicentennial Commission paperback
