Sir David Brewster (1781-1868) was a Scottish physicist, mathematician, astronomer, inventor, and writer. In 1807, he undertook the editorship of the newly projected Edinburgh Encyclopaedia, of which the first part appeared in 1808, and the last not until 1830. The work was strongest in the scientific department, and many of its most valuable articles were from the Brewster's pen. The parts issue is very rare. In the U.S. it was published in 36 parts (1812- 1831). The best American engravers were engaged for the work. The set bears the bookplate and family records of Theodore B.
