Markham 1568-1637 wrote extensively in the fields of literature horsemanship and country pursuits and his works underwent almost two hundred editions by the end of the seventeenth century. Our copy has a double-sided sheet tipped-in at the front endpaper - possibly the author's brief explanation of the aims of his work I can not see this mentioned in any other copy. A highly important work in the history of grass taxonomy and with an impeccable provenance - from the library of C.E. A salesman's book offering images and talking points for Gerber Garment Technology's computerized systems for pattern making pattern cutting and inventory management. According to their introductory material Gerber at that time had 1750 systems in place and an international headquarters in Brussels. They have been acquired by another company but are still in business today. A fascinating and presumably extremely uncommon snapshot of the technological revolution in fashion production. External description: corners and spine tips rounded and bumped with minor fraying at the extremities of the corners. Some bumping as well to the board edges where they extend beyond the textblock. Rubbed lightened spot to the center of the spine column and darkening ot the top of the boards and the top edge of the textblock. Interior description: Front pastedown with two erasure spots - brown papers lightened and scuffed from the erasure. Front hinge is split with paper exposing the binding web - still relatively solid. The rear hinge is starting but not as advanced as the front. Darkening to the edges of the back of the free endpapers from the dark brown endpaper coloring coming through. Some light soil at the half-title. Frontispiece plates graphs and maps intact including two large folding maps bound in at rear and an extending graph in the supplements. One of the folded maps has a long tear at the binding edge. Binding feels solid and sturdy although cupping the spine will always be recommended with a book of this size and weight. Advert for the European publisher's catalog affixed to the rear pastedown. The pages are bright and clean majorly free of the foxing that generally plagues books of this time period. A well-kept copy inspite of the wear at the hinges and board edges. 637 pp. <br/><br/> W.H. Allen & Co. hardcover

Ha tenuto conferenze su mineralogia, agricoltura, tecnologia, scienza dei materiali, commercio e pubblica amministrazione generale. Il presente libro "è degno di nota per il suo approccio sistematico alle varie vocazioni e per le sue descrizioni di numerosi mestieri". - D.S.B., I, p. 554. Beckmann descrive dettagliatamente la lavorazione delle materie prime da parte delle singole industrie, tra cui tintura, fabbricazione della carta, birra, fabbricazione del sapone, decolorazione della cera, tabacco, porcellana, vetro, salnitro, polvere da sparo, zucchero e molti altri.
