22909THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER. New York: New York Common Prayer and Book Society 1853. First edition thus. Original full sheep gilt morocco label gilt. Worn but a solid copy in the original publisher's binding. Twain arrived in New York City after leaving St. Louis and went to work as a type-setter at John Gray's firm on Monday August 29 1853 and stayed there until mid-October when he left for Philadelphia. He wrote home to his mother on August 31 saying that he and forty other type-setters set type for an "immense" number of books and several magazines like The Knickerbocker New York Recorder Choral Advocate Jewish Chronicle Littell's Living Age and the Irish American. Most of the books published by Gray in 1853 were religious pamphlets and some anti-slavery texts; this is one of the few substantial books he published that year. Gray's four story building was next-door to the huge Harper Brothers pre-fire complex and it is possible that they were also farmed out work by Harper for publications without using their own printer's slug. unknown

Charles Whittingham printed the work on handmade paper in black-letter type for Pickering who inspired by the printing of Aldus Manutius published in 1844 a series of six such facsimiles of important editions of the Book of Common Prayer each of which was => illustrated with wood-engraved initials and ornaments done by Mary Byfield and limited to => only 350 copies printed on paper with another two on vellum. The original title-pages were reproduced for each in => red and black and in the case of the present example the almanac pages likewise printed in red and black. Each book in this homage to important editions of the BCP was => an outstanding example of the Victorian-era Gothic design movement and Kelly notes that these volumes are "considered to be among the finest work of Whittingham."<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Signed 19th-century dark brown morocco framed and panelled in single gilt and double blind fillets with gilt-tooled corner fleurons surrounding a central arabesque medallion; spine with raised bands gilt-stamped fleur-de-lis decorations in compartments and gilt-stamped publication information. 198014498<p>Very Good HC no DJ. Beige cloth over boards white stylized woman’s head with hair spelling 'Kaliflower' on front cover the hair wrapping around spine onto back cover; gray laid paper end papers. Bright generally clean covers and spine have few small spots; firm square corners; tightly bound; crisp clean interior. Brilliant colorful images and print on every page. Starting in April of 1969 Sutter Street Commune in S.F. following Digger philosophy began issuing a free intercommunal newspaper to area communes to ‘pass the dharma’ i.e. share information with other like-minded communards. For the next 3 years Kaliflower was distributed on a weekly basis eventually to nearly 300 communes. This volume is drawn from some of those issues but also has some commentary about the making and growth of Kaliflower. As with everything this group produced nothing is signed or attributed. One of the Sutter Street Commune founders was an experienced printer and the press work was high quality. This is a nicely bound fine quality volume. Some examples in this size are in 12s and 6s. We have found none that are recorded as being fully in 6s. 176 mm. Original worn purple leather binding. Gilt decorated leather spine detached, but present. Rear board detached. Corners worn with loss. Early manuscript ownership of Harriett Lucas Pickney and F. R. Hugar on title page of the Book of Common Prayer. Manuscript notes on verso of title page record of General Thomas Pickney's family captured from his family Bible by F. R. Hugar, information covers the General's marriage 1779 and through various births and deaths until 1848. Other (Huger) Pickney manuscript notes from the 1920's recto of the Preface. Double column throughout. Marbled endpapers. Slight margin loss on in sig A of Book of Common Prayer. Mild damp stain last few signatures of The Whole Book of Psalms. Hardbound. In 1789 the American Episcopal church adopted its first version of the Book of Common Prayer, which was used from 1790 until a major revision was completed in 1892. During this time, several editions of the Book of Common Prayer were published with corrections and other minor changes, of which this 1793 edition was the first. No priority has been established for the several 1793 Gaine varieties and variants. Because of format differences with those found in the record, we think that this is an unrecorded variant (closely allied to: Evans/Shipton & Mooney 26043; Griffiths 1793:11).
