1694M7337Paris: N. de Fer c.1694. Very Good; . Notes: According to Kershaw this map was originally published in "Les Forces De L'Europe" "In August 1690 Sir William Phips left Boston to attack and capture Quebec. Previous military success at Port Royal had given the English an excess of confidence which Phips fully exploited in planning his expedition against Quebec but which quickly evaporated when the under-equipped force discovered the extent of the defenses at Quebec. The operation was disastrous and the English struggled back to Boston losing a number of ships on the way. The battle lines of the English fleet and the details of the French defences were recorded by Villenuve in manuscript form which were subsequently the source of a sequence of printed maps." RGW22847With 4 Share certificates for the Llynvi Coal & Iron Company Ltd dated 1871 to Mary Cavan creased on one corner 1885 correspondence and endorsements about the debentures. The principal sums were repaid in 1885. In 1884 it would appear the debentures were worth £41860. The works were started in 1798. This particular company was formed in 1872. It would appear Mary Cavan held nearly one third of the shares in The Llynvi Coal and Iron Company in 1871. Her husband Colonel Cavan had died in 1870. The Cavan family had a long history of investing in the South Wales iron industry. James Cavan had invested in the Llynvi Iron Works in 1845 and before that in the Cambrian Iron and Spelter Company. In 1886 the companyÕs ironworks at Maesteg ceased to work. Possibly the paying back of the debentures was a contributing factor to the closure. unknown

1750152922London: 1750. First edition thus an abridgement of the 1736 pamphlet The Interest of Great Britain in Supplying Herself with Iron. "This tract is curious from the information which it affords respecting the production of iron at the time which the author estimates at 18000 tons. He states the difficulties with which the manufacture had to contend from the scarcity and high price of timber; and yet not very consistently complains of the importation of Swedish iron and still more bitterly of the establishment of iron works in our North American colonies. It is curious that not a word is said in this tract about the employment of pit-coal in the manufacture of iron; though Lord Dudley had taken out a patent for its application in 1619; and the practice of making iron by its means had been carried on to some extent at the works in Colebrook Dale since about 1740 or for ten years previously to the publication of this tract" McCulloch p. 238. Octavo 16pp. Sewn as issued uncut. Neat ink notation at head of title page. Minor creases and soiling a very good copy. ESTC T76989; Sabin 90635. 188052092New York: Printed For The American Iron Post and Construction Company n. d. ca 1880's. 1880. First edition. 11" x 8 1/2" pictorial printed one-sheet printed on both sides. The company promotes this iron post to be both stronger and cheaper than wooden posts. The company claims the posts are economical durable safe beautiful and strong. The posts are covered with a special coating to prevent rust fires do not affect them nor do floods carry them away and the posts and wire do not fill up with snow banks as with ordinary fences. The posts are manufactured by The American Iron Post and Construction Company at their manufacturing plant located in Wellsville Ohio and by special arrangement with the well-known iron firm of W. D. Wood & Company of Pittsburgh. The company further states "It is now conceded that in the great West the wire fence for the purpose of extensive cattle ranches for prairie farms and for railroads is superior to all others; and a want has been long felt for a post whose strength cheapness and durability would make this iron fence system complete -- one which the forest and prairie fires would not burn -- one which would do away with the expense and tedium of hole-digging -- one that could be cheaply and quickly put up and which would last a life-time." Faint fold creases else a near fine copy of an interesting and very scarce range item. Printed For The American Iron Post and Construction Company, n. d. (ca 1880's). unknown
