Hardcover, bound in contemporary handsome red full calf, sides gilt ruled, spine with gilt tooled raised bands, gilt decorated and lettered compartments, gilt tooled binding edges, all bookblock edges gilt, silken endpapers, cloth inner hinges, 2 silken markers, one red and one white; some rubbing to binding, some soiling to endpapers. Plates foxed due to paper quality, else a handsome copy in a very good condition. ~ Second edition, enlarged, "plus complète que la première" to comprise a manual. First published in 1850 as "Hygiène de l'Enfance ou Guide des Mères de Famille". On baby and child care, on the prevention of infant and child mortality, on breast feeding, illness and vaccination, early puberty, etc. The accompanying plates are very pleasant. Now merely charming, Servais' work, influenced by Philippe Joseph van Custem (1768-1845), received great acclaim at the time and served as, indeed, a guide and a manual, not unlike Dr. Spocks' some generations later.

He is now remembered for his work on diabetes. In 1779 Dobson published his "Medical Commentary on Fixed Air" after his success in using "fixed air" (carbon dioxide) in the treatment of scurvy.
