Tirage à 330 exemplaires numérotés, le nôtre (n°3) faisant partie du tirage de tête (7 exemplaires) sur Japon Impérial. Accompagné de sa suite de 7 gravures en premier état sur feuillets libres. Bien que la justification mentionne un cuivre, celui-ci n'est pas présent. Publié initialement en 1790, ce conte philosophique, qui suit la quête d'un savant anglais en Inde à la recherche de la vérité, oppose le dogmatisme des institutions savantes aux valeurs humaines simples telles que la sagesse et l'humilité. Bel état du texte et des planches, bon exemplaire.

Chaque conte met en scène des personnages de différentes classes sociales confrontés à des dilemmes moraux ou à des situations révélatrices de leur caractère. L'auteur utilise l'ironie et l'humour pour critiquer les vices et les travers de son époque tout en proposant des leçons de vertu. À sa parution, les "Contes moraux" ont connu un grand succès et ont contribué à la renommée de Marmontel. Ils ont influencé de nombreux écrivains et penseurs de l'époque des Lumières en France et ailleurs. Les contes sont encore étudiés aujourd'hui pour leur valeur littéraire et leur pertinence morale. Malgré les défauts de la reliure, exemplaire intéressant avec un texte en assez bon état et un bon état général des planches.
