L'auteur utilise l'ironie et l'humour pour critiquer les vices et les travers de son époque tout en proposant des leçons de vertu. À sa parution, les "Contes moraux" ont connu un grand succès et ont contribué à la renommée de Marmontel. Ils ont influencé de nombreux écrivains et penseurs de l'époque des Lumières en France et ailleurs. Les contes sont encore étudiés aujourd'hui pour leur valeur littéraire et leur pertinence morale.
