Issued unbound in 10 gigantic folded leaves with horrifying engravings of cannibalism. The pages are all housed inside a paper stiff white illustrated paper folder which is housed inside of a large stiff paper slipcase with olive green spine panel titled in white and black and white illustrated side panels. The pages are clean and bright. Minor browning to spine panel and edges of folder along with a few scuff marks to front panel. Wear rubbing chipping and short tears to edges of slipcase. Browning to edges of panels of slipcase. A fascinating piece that can be appreciated for the images alone even if one is unable to read the text. 40 pages. Size: about 23 x 15 inches. 157 pages including index. Haida carvers on Canada's Pacific Coast have carved figures from black rock for about 150 years. The genesis of this book was when two dedicated collectors donated their works to the British Columbia Provincial Museum, thus assembling the largest and best collection of these carvings known to the Museum. The benefactors, Francis and Kathleen Reif, suggested that the Museum produce a well illustrated book as a definitive scholarly work on the black, Haida carvings. This volume is the result. "During the first half of the nineteenth century artists fanned out across the northeastern United States to find aesthetic inspiration in nature (and historic architecture). Thomas Addison Richards (1820-1900) was one of the few who traveled extensively in the South. Through his paintings, illustrated magazine articles, and guidebooks, Richards introduced the natural beauty and distinct characteristics of this region to a national audience. Born in London, his family immigrated to America in 1831, moving first to Hudson, New York, and then to Charleston, South Carolina. Around 1837 they settled in the small town of Penfield, Georgia, the original site of Mercer University, where Richards's father, a Baptist minister, served as a charter trustee. In 1838 the young Richards left for Augusta, where for the next two years he offered lessons in painting and drawing and contributed travelogues about his rambles around Georgia to the Augusta Mirror, a local literary magazine. In 1841, sketchbook in hand, he left Augusta to travel around the South in search of picturesque scenes. In 1844 he settled permanently in New York City, where he gave art lessons from his studio and began taking classes at the National Academy of Design. He subsequently became a full academician and served as the institution's corresponding secretary from 1852 to 1892. Many of the paintings he regularly contributed to academy exhibitions were romantic landscapes of the South. Throughout the 1850s Richards penned numerous articles and books. He supplied illustrated articles based on his travels around the Northeast to Graham's Magazine (Philadelphia) and the Knickerbocker (New York). For the weekly Southern Literary Gazette, published by his brother out of Athens, Georgia, and Harper's New Monthly Magazine (New York), he submitted essays on his travels through the South. Richards enlivened his travelogues with personal anecdotes, legendary stories, tips on lodging, and engravings after his on-site drawings. In1854 a series of engravings after Richards's southern sketches appeared in Romance of American Landscape / American Scenery. In 1857 Richards married Mary E. Anthony, an author of children's stories. Thereafter, Richards concentrated on teaching and painting. He served as the first director of the Cooper Union School of Design for Women in New York, a position he held from 1858 to 1860, and taught at New York University from 1867 to 1887. Saint-Lambert (1716-1803) began writing poetry in his adolescence and belonged to the circle around Francoise de Graffigny in Luneville. Inked ownership of Miss Ann Willcox on top of preface pages and elsewhere. Bookplate of Redmond Conyngham in both volumes. Redmond Conygham (1781-1846) was born in Philadelphia. He inherited from his paternal grandfather an estate in the county Donegal, Ireland, yielding L2,000 a year, and subsequently spent some time in Ireland. During his stay abroad he became intimate with Curran, Grattan, and other prominent Irishmen, including his cousin, William Conyngham Plunket, afterward lord-chancellor of Ireland. On his return to the U.S. he settled in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and was active in state and local politics. He then removed to Lancaster County, where he devoted much of his leisure to antiquarian research. Issued as a limited edition, less than 500 copies were printed. No. 49 of 480 copies octavo size 45 pp. The Saint Dominic's Press founded by Harry Hilary Douglas Clarke Pepler flourished at Ditchling Sussex from 1916 to 1936. The first home of the Press was "a disused stable" with a hundred-year-old Stanhope hand-press which supposedly had belonged to William Morris. Pepler endeavored to do everything possible by hand believing that such would both produce the best results and also be a "more individual or 'humane'.product". He therefore "preferred the handpress to the machine handmade to machine-made paper and handset founder's type to the products of typesetting machines." <br /> <br /> Pepler met Edward Johnston and Eric Gill while living in Hammersmith; Pepler and his family would eventually move to Ditchling to join Gill who was one of the most important artists to provide illustrations for the St. Dominic's Press. Other artists who provided illustrations included David Jones Desmond Chute Philip Hagreen and Thomas Derrick among others. <br /> <br /> This a fascinating association copy: inscribed in the year of publication by Bede Jarrett OP "an English Dominican friar and Catholic priest who was a noted historian and author.who formally reinstated the Dominican order at the University of Oxford for the first time since the dissolution of the monasteries under King Henry VIII." Fr. Jarrett inscribed the volume in the front free endpaper: "For Mother Prioress O.P. / on / Sept. 8: 1930 her silver / Jubilee / from / F. Bede Jarrett O.P.". The Mother Prioress according to an inked notation next to the inscripton is Sr. M. No. 200 of 320 copies on paper duodecimo size 49 pp. Edmund Spenser 1552/3 to 1599 is probably best known for his epic poem "The Faerie Queene" an ode to Elizabeth I. Even today he is considered one of the greatest poets of the English language. <br/><br/>This work "The Wedding Songs" is a publication uniting two works which were published a year apart both dealing with love and romance.<br/><br/>According to "Chanticleer" this is the first work of the Press to be illustrated with wood-engravings; however they go on to state that "there is no great feeling of harmony between the engravings and the type" p. 16. We find the three wood-engravings charming; Ethelbert White 1892-1972 was a founding member of the English Wood Engraving Society beginning his career with water colour but being introduced to wood-engraving in 1920. <br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Quarter linen white paper spine label with black lettering blue paper sides over boards fore- and bottom edges uncut the frontispiece one of three wood engravings and the only one in three colours rust green and yellow the other two only in rust; Caslon type on hand-made unbleached Arnold paper duodecimo size 7 3/8" by 4 1/2" pagination: 1-8 9-46 47 final wood-engraving 48 colophon 49 publisher's device; no. 200 of the 320 copies on paper per the colophon; per the bibliography there were 350 copies on paper there were an additional 25 copies on Japanese vellum. In the original plain glassine dust jacket. <br/><br/>___CONDITION: Volume near fine with clean boards perfectly straight corners without rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright with many signatures still unopened and entirely free of prior owner markings; some light sunning at the top edge the glassine wrapper was cut a bit short else fine.
