The term shooting a film was possibly derived from Marey's invention. He was able to record multiple images of a subject's movement on the same camera plate rather than the individual images Muybridge had produced. Marey's chronophotographs multiple exposures on single glass plates and on strips of sensitized paper - celluloid film - that passed automatically through a camera of his own design were revolutionary. He was soon able to achieve a frame rate of 30 images. Further experimentation was conducted by French-born Louis Aime Augustin Le Prince in 1888. Le Prince used long rolls of paper covered with photographic emulsion for a camera that he devised and patented. Two short fragments survive of his early motion picture film one of which was titled Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge. The work of Muybridge Marey and Le Prince laid the groundwork for the development of motion picture cameras projectors and transparent celluloid film - hence the development of cinema. American inventor George Eastman who had first manufactured photographic dry plates in 1878 provided a more stable type of celluloid film with his concurrent developments in 1888 of sensitized paper roll photographic film instead of glass plates and a convenient "Kodak" small box camera a still camera that used the roll film. He improved upon the paper roll film with another invention in 1889 - perforated celluloid synthetic plastic material coated with gelatin roll-film with photographic emulsion." Original orange cloth with printed paper label affixed to cover in facsimile yellow photo-illustrated dustjacket. Textured endpapers. Title page printed in brown. Rights reserved and printed by E. Beaufort A. S.

This work is Drtikol's seminal collection of nude studies. "Although influenced early in his career while studying photography in Munich by the decorative trend of Jugendstil or Art Nouveau Drtikol moved with Žena ve Světle into his own modernist style of photography that prefigured and influenced the emerging Bauhaus aesthetic. He built sets and props out of plywood and used an arc lamp to cast strong shadows. The graphic presentation of the book is striking with the gum prints on thin paper one to a page set off by large page numbers. By 1935 Drtikol was creating wholly abstract works in which the nudes were replaced by figurines or geometric shapes made from painted plywood. At age 52 at the peak of his international fame Drtikol abandoned photography altogether to concentrate on painting meditation and oriental philosophy until his death in 1961." It gained notoriety and elicited controversy when it was originally released in 1963 and won the Japan Photo Critics Association's writer award. The incident shocked the nation and in its wake the photographer was quite unsure of how to proceed regarding the publication of the book. Not wanting to seem like an opportunist taking advantage of the controversy and the publicity surround Mishima's death he contemplated shelving the project but was later persuaded by Mishima's widow Yoko who said that her husband would have wanted it to be released. It was finally release only a few months later on January 30th 1971.

Text in Japanese and English throughout.

Portfolio with foxing to the white cloth including the front cover and the interior but the illustrations on the flaps are still clean. 1930CAT209New York and Environs 1930. Excellent. We find scant information on Henry Reister a professional photographer operating throughout the New York metropolitan region in the early part of the century. His studio moved several times from the Bronx to Bridgewater New Jersey then to Woodlawn New York. This interesting and varied collection from his estate shows the type of work available to a professional photographer operating in New York during the period - architectural shoots product photography events and some portraiture. The opulent wealth of New York’s upper classes during the 1920s is on display in Reister’s architectural work which makes up a large portion of this collection. The burgeoning commercial age is also shown in his product photographs most notably a series of photographs of Remington typewriters a series of photographs of the newly created New York Telephone Directory two photographs of automobiles and a series of brightly-lit interior grocery store displays.

Contents as follows:

Seven images advertising typewriters with five showing a young woman posed with a Remington typewriter; five images of the New York Telephone Directory; five images of brightly lit grocery store interiors most focusing on elaborate lighting on a dairy display; two images of automobiles one showing a man in fine dress posed alongside an automobile the other showing a close-up of a license plate; thirteen varied product images including proto-modernist images of radiators an image of the Cory Smoke Telegraph Indicator three floral still lives and an opulently presented bowl of ice cream; forty-six architectural photographs including a rather stark series of institutional interiors including lavatories extravagant gardens the interiors of a bank on Broadway and high end domestic interiors; six photographs of the Yorkville Social Center Baby Parade of 1916; seven portraits including one of a worker holding two bolts several military portraits and an outdoor portrait of a couple in a garden; Eight scenes from Reister’s personal life most relating to an automobile trip made with his wife in 1930.

Overall a strong representation of pre-Depression New York with many iconic aspects of the city and its environs represented.
