19405349Mexico 1940. Near fine. 100 stereoview photographs with duplicate 2.25-inch square image exposures mounted to grey card mounts measuring 3 x 6 inches. Prints hand-numbered in the margin at lower right thirty-three with hand-written ink notations to versos. A couple of prints with small areas of discolor to extremities with typical bowing to mounts otherwise a very well-preserved group. A compelling group of 100 vernacular stereoview photographs capturing travel in Mexico chiefly Mexico City and its surrounding rural environs to the near south and east in identified locations including Cordoba Fortin Cuernavaca Zacatepec Puebla Tlaxcala and others. Thirty-three of the views are hand-annotated and a few others capture visible signage identifying rural markets Native communities schools landmarks and more including a series from the floating gardens of Xochimilco rural schools near Cuernavaca the Temple at Quetzalcoatl and so forth. Some examples of the handwritten captions describe the nature of the indigenous communities encountered by the photographer such as: "Baby among the vegetables in the market - Cuernavaca" "A native woman goes to market in Cuernavaca" "A peasant home Chipitlan" "Old man cleaning tripe near community laundry at Zacatepec" "Native children selling bananas and gardenias packed in banana stalks at gate of old hacienda - Fortin" "Village women in community laundry at Zacatepec" "Native boy sliding down rail of inclined railway leading to valley near dam between Cordoba and Fortin " "Native children selling bananas and gardenias packed in banana stalks at gate of old hacienda - Fortin" "Gardenia vendors stopped us again as we returned from Cordoba" "Native market at Ixmiquilpan - poorest part of Mexico" and "The village orchestra - playing on native instruments - Tlaxcala."<br /> <br /> The materials are undated though a clear view of a school of the Comision Nacional de Irrigacion which was a federal agency in existence only between 1926 and 1947 and one view with two ca-1930s American cars clearly visible in the background along with general print qualities of the photographs suggests a date somewhere around 1940. Vernacular stereoviews of Mexico are exceedingly rare from any period. A complete list of the manuscript captions on the verso of thirty-three images is available by request. unknown
1890213041890. LGBTQ Cross-Dressing Turn-of-the-century photography of queer gender expression and theatrical cross-dressing during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Produced in the 1890s through the early 1900s the photographs capture women presenting in masculine attire and gender-bending costume roles. The material provides visual evidence of gender nonconformance and coded queer intimacy during a period when same-sex relationships and gender variance was both socially stigmatized or criminalized in Europe and North America. Costume theatrical play and staged portraiture were socially legible expressions of queer identity and romantic relationships in an otherwise restrictive social environment.<br /> <br /> Archive of 17 photographs and real photo postcards measuring approximately 4 x 6 inches to 3.5 x 4 inches. Six silver gelatin photographs depict a group gathered in a parlor where several individuals wear men's formal clothing including suits bow ties and top hats. The scenes portray staged performances and playful activities among the group including one image of two participants dancing a waltz another showing one individual lifting another in a theatrical fainting pose and a musical scene in which one figure plays a banjo while another accompanies on guitar. The archive also includes eleven real photo postcards featuring studio portraits of female performers wearing stylized Spanish costume roles including toreador and flamenco dancer attire alongside one portrait in contemporary Western clothing. Many postcards are postmarked 1903 and bear handwritten French inscriptions on the versos. The studio portraits emphasize romantic gestures including poses in which one figure offers a flower to the other whispers closely to a partner or holds a guitar in serenade.<br /> <br /> During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries theatrical costume and staged photography frequently provided socially acceptable frameworks for gender experimentation and intimate same-sex companionship that might otherwise attract scrutiny. Such imagery is particularly significant for documenting queer social worlds prior to the emergence of organized LGBTQ political movements later in the twentieth century. Archives of private photographs capturing gender-nonconforming dress and affectionate same-sex interaction from this era remain comparatively scarce. Light edge wear and minor surface marks visible on several photographs and postcards consistent with age; photographic images retain strong clarity; overall very good condition. This archive preserves a rare visual record of queer gender play and same-sex intimacy during the decades preceding modern LGBTQ rights movements. unknown

1920ABC_48727Iraq 1920. Kept in a clear plastic sleeve. With 11 snapshots all ca. 6 x 9 cm. Collection of 11 snapshots from the early 1920s likely taken by a British soldier stationed in the Middle East. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly where these photographs were taken but presumably in Mesopotamia present day Iraq. Great Britain was actively involved in Mesopotamia from 1914-1932. Prior to the First World War a large portion of the Middle East was in the hands of the Ottoman Empire. However when the Ottomans sided with Germany in 1914 Great Britain sent forces to Mesopotamia to protect the Anglo-Persian oil fields. The British army initially suffered a major defeat but eventually gained the upper hand and captured Baghdad in 1917. In 1920 after the Ottoman Empire was partitioned the United Kingdom formally established control in the region under a mandate of the League of Nations. However the Iraqi people resented this idea and revolted. In 1922 Great Britain and Iraq then signed the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty in which Iraq was given the right for self-government while Great Britain stayed in control of the country's foreign policy. This would last until Iraq's independence in 1932.The present snapshots were taken in the early days of British control in the region and depict the atmosphere at the time. They show the daily life of locals including women collecting water from the river men standing guard and the hustle and bustle in the streets. Also included are various group photos of British soldiers and locals. The photographs show some traces of wear around the corners and edges but are overall in good condition. unknown

In 1811 Friedrich Krupp opened a factory in his hometown of Essen in the Ruhr river valley providing high-quality cast steel for tools and dies. His son Alfred took over at Friedrich's death and in 1859 received an order from the Prussian government for the production of munitions to be used in the Franco-Prussian War. Leading up to World War I Krupp made millions constructing the armor plating that protected German battleships and fabricating the huge cannons it is best known for. 19566216Waco Tx 1956. Very good. Twenty individual photographs measuring 3.5 x 5 inches or slightly smaller each with accompanying inscribed notecards of roughly the same size. Each photo signed and mostly inscribed. Otherwise minor wear. A bit of discoloration to cards. An intriguing group of twenty signed photographs that depicts a group of Vietnamese servicemen in a training program at the now-defunct James Connally Air Force Base and around Waco Texas during the mid-1950s. The images were previously assembled in a now-perished album and presented to a Master Sergeant Jack Reavis presumably their instructor or guide and his wife "For souvenir of the times that we lived in James Connally AFB" on behalf of "All Vietnamese students." Each photo is signed and dated 1956 and often bears a short commemorative inscription and is also accompanied by a notecard bearing the name of the pictured man in the Roman alphabet and Vietnamese script and usually identifying him as a member of the "1st group" or "2nd group" of engineering mechanics. That they were receiving training in the field of aviation mechanics might also be intuited from the appearance of several of the men with aircraft. Other images including standing portraits near barracks and other bae buildings as well as more casual shots of men with cars horseback riding on the streets of downtown Waco and enjoying a day out at nearby Lake Whitney. We uncovered no additional information concerning this training program and 1956 seems quite early for stateside training of Vietnamese military personnel. The front board of the former album bearing the gift inscription and a notecard with a manuscript map of Vietnam are still with the photographs and other notecards. A very interesting group and quite worthy of further research. unknown
