Fold mark inherent to the mailing. Prince Georges from the House of Ghika a princely family of Romania of Albanian origin married in Paris in 1910 the most famous Amazon of All Paris Liane de Pougy. René-Louis Doyon sent his work to his friend the prince who thanks him for it: ""Nous avons lu votre livre et c'était délicieux comme une causerie avec vous une causerie qui emporte dans ces pays aimés du soleil et d'Isbelle Eberhardt que vous vous plûtes à citer. Merci encore pour ce grand plaisir que vous nous avez donné."" We read your book and it was delightful like a conversation with you a conversation that carries one away to those beloved lands of sun and of Isabelle Eberhardt whom you took pleasure in quoting. DS 2pp recto and verso 8½" X 12" Madrid Spain 1913 April 15. Very good. Titled in Spanish "Court of First Instance of This City" this partly-printed document is a "Sentence Extract" and reports that 48-year-old former banker Sergio Beliavsky a Russian from St. Petersburg was found guilty of murdering 37-year-old jeweler Alejandro Petrovicz from Odessa. He is sentenced to five years in prison payment of court costs 1987 pesetas 40 centimes and restitution to Petrovicz's family 12000 pesetas. At lower left above the circular red inkstamp of the "Tribunal Correccional de 1a. Instancia Madrid" Prieto as president of this court signs large and bold in brown ink. Attractive intriguing document -- worthy of further research. unknown

Full signature on her 3½" X 2" business card Sacramento CA n.y. Near fine. Small smudge to "t" in "Priest"; small show-through at upper center from tiny tape stain on verso. Handsome card as California state treasurer a position she held from 1967 until her death bearing the gold state seal at upper left. Uncommon in this form and accompanied by a 7" X 9" glossy black-and-white news agency photograph a March 8 1953 closeup of her handing a one dollar bill to another woman with original paper label affixed to verso describing the scene: "U.S. Treasurer Ivy Baker Priest left presents a dollar bill bearing her autograph to director Alma K. Schneider of the U.S. Mint at Denver during an inspection trip. The one-dollar bill is one of the first printing to bear signatures of GOP treasurer and secretary of the treasury in 20 years." Very good. A bit edgeworn with small closed tear at upper margin. A nice very displayable pair. unknown

Handsome piece addressed in Praed's hand to "The Elder Brethren / of the / Trinity House / London" and franked by him at lower left. 38471This noted U.S. Treasury Department statistician was an entrepreneur who created a composite photograph of signers of the amendment abolishing slavery that proved quite popular; he was also an inventor archaeologist social reformer philanthropist and evangelist who created cartographic maps of Egypt and North Africa for the Oriental Topographical Corps. ALS 1p 8½" X 10 3/4" n.p. n.y. August 29. Addressed to Giles F. Ward in New York City -- possibly father of Giles F. Ward Jr. 1845-65 a lieutenant with the 12th New York Cavalry who was accidentally killed by a colleague while in North Carolina. Very good. Penned on ultra-thin onion-skin paper with occasional burn-through from heavily-inked letters. Reads in part: "I write this. to request that you will favor me with your own opinion freely expressed as to what the price of the Lincoln Cot should be the patent either on a joint stock operation or on sale in the other way you spoke of a simple sale of the right Please let me know what in your judgment it should be even though it be less than 1/10 the proposed figures" Boldly penned in rich brown ink. Powell and two others one of whose last name was Lincoln designed this specialized portable cot in 1862 and sought to interest the U.S. Army in providing it to the troops. A fascinating piece. unknown

AMS 1p 8½" X 11" Paris France 1923 n.d. Near fine. Slightest bit of age toning. Page from an actual working draft on a sheet of lined notebook paper headed in Porter's incredibly miniscule but handsome script "The Seller of Dreams / By / Holworthy Hall." Twenty-five handwritten lines of this tale follow. Porter has then in pencil inserted words here and there sometimes entire lines and crossed out a number of the inked lines. In the upper right corner Porter then inscribes it "For Professor Johannsen / with the regards of / Harold E. Porter / 'Holworthy Hall' / Paris 1923." Whether this tale ever made it into print we have not been able to verify -- perhaps it did but under another title or perhaps it was a short story. When we say Porter had an incredibly miniscule script we're not kidding: his letters measure 1/16th" in height! Nevertheless -- with the aid of a magnifying glass -- it's an attractive easily legible script. Johannsen authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. His original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. unknown

At lower left in black fineline Pontes signs handsomely in her lovely calligraphic script. Pontes did the lettering for this stamp. Addressed to poet Joseph Auslander 1897-1965 at the Library of Congress. Very good to fine. All concern the donation of Pollock's manuscripts to the Library of Congress although he protests "I don't want to crowd you with Pollockiana.". ".nothing would give me greater pleasure" writes Pollock "and particularly because. the inspiration for my most successful play 'THE FOOL' came of an afternoon's reading in that Library." Regarding the manuscript of his just-completed autobiography "Harvest of My Years" Pollock sheds some light on his work methods: ".all but the first two chapters of this are written in pencil. The first two were dictated and typed and if you desire with the combination I will include a note of explanation. The pencilled manuscript is voluminous of course and should you prefer I could substitute a typed script with pen and ink corrections in my handwriting but I think you will agree that if it can be preserved the original pencilled script is more interesting." A fine little archive with much biographical and bibliographical interest. unknown

Addressed to "My Dear Barker" possibly New York and Sea Beach Railroad official John Barker or politico and future New York representative and governor Benjamin Barker Odell Jr. 1854-1926. Good plus. Strong folds though none weakened; small paper loss at right upper margin slightly affects a couple words and small triangular chip at lower right corner not affecting text. On "New York Lake Erie & Western Railroad Co. / Office of Vice President" letterhead Platt crosses out the printed "New York" and substitutes Jacksonville he boldly pens regrets at "my failure to receive your valued favor of the 2d. inst till today & the consequent delay in return -- I was down in the So part of the State out of reach of the mails." And likely pertaining to future New York politician and then-current Minister to France Levi P. Morton future New York representative and governor and U.S. vice president he remarks: "I am sincerely glad that Mr. Morton does not propose to let his shabby treatment by the Union League Club go unnoticed. His friends ought to take it up and resent it in some marked and earnest way." Morton was a Union League Club member but what their offense against him was is not known. An interesting fairly attractive letter. unknown

The 27-year-old brand-new state legislator requests his salary -- and likely his very first since he served in the New York State Assembly only in 1796 and this request comes in February: "The Treasurer of the State of New York willl please to pay. the Sum which shall be certified to be due to me by the Speaker of the House of Assembly for my Services as a Member of that House during the Session of 1796." Boldly and attractively penned in brown ink. unknown

Fascinating lengthy explanation of how he came to write "Secrets of the Success of Great Musicians." In part: "Why was it for instance that some well educated intelligent person was not at all liked by the majority and indeed was a failure in life I soon discovered that lack of manners a repellant personality an easily recognizable egotism were responsible for this misfortune. Others again have been blessed with the divine spark of genius but they never reached prominence in life. Why In my investigations I found out that the reason for their lack of success was that they did not concentrate their efforts in that special branch for which they were gifted they lacked the 'stick to it' they were too erratic 'Jack of all trades master in none.' Others on the contrary although endowed with a very small amount of talent made for themselves an enviable name and obtained important and influential positions. Why Because they were indefatigable workers and compensated the lack of genius with their diligence and pertinacity." With original envelope. Accompanied by IP 4" X 6" New York NY 1925 n.d.
