150090Rare original typed letter from guide Taylor Williams recollecting about hunting antelope with Ernest Hemingway. One page single typed sheet. The letter reads in full "Hemingway Box by Taylor Williams. Our party consisting of Hemingway Lloyd Arnold Ellis Chapin our packer and myself had ridden into the first fringe of foothills above the plains along the Pahsimoroi River in quest of a trophy antelope having passed up several in the lower country that were not to our liking. Chapin was riding off to the side where he could get a view from behind a butte when he shouted to us that he had just jumped a small band of antelope. With that Hemingway spurred his horse and rode forward to get a better view as they came out from behind the rise. On seeing a sizable buck which was by this time in full stride he dismounted and ran forward for a better view and shot. He was using my Model 70 Winchester 257 with open sights. He struck the buck high in the shoulders and he went down at the first shot. We stepped off the distance 220 full steps. I think this was one of the most spectacular shots that I can remember in my experience as a guide." The writer was Hemingway’s great friend Taylor “Beartracks†Williams the well-known Sun Valley hunting and fishing guide. Hemingway’s friendship with Williams dated back to their meeting in Idaho in the late 1930s after which Hemingway frequently returned to Ketchum before eventually settling there. Ernest Hemingway wrote portions of For Whom the Bell Tolls 1940 while staying in Ketchum Idaho where the landscape and relative isolation supported sustained work on the novel. It is even illustrated on the dust jacket with a photograph of him at his typewriter taken there. In near fine condition with creasing and mail folds. Accompanied by two black and white glossy photographs of Hemingway with an antelope. The first is Hemingway smiling in a cowboy hat standing beside a horse with an antelope on its back and holding its horn with his left hand. The second is Hemingway and his third wife Martha Gellhorn smiling sitting on a hill together and holding the horns of an antelope. Both in near fine condition with light creasing. The pieces measure 8.5 inches by 6.5 inches. Together with a folded leaflet by Lloyd R. Arnold "High on the Wild with Hemingway" about For Whom the Bell Tolls. In fine condition. Ernest Hemingway 1899–1961 was one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century whose concise prose style and exploration of universal themes reshaped modern literature. Known for his works such as The Old Man and the Sea A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls Hemingway developed a narrative voice that captured the complexities of human struggle and resilience with stark simplicity. His experiences as a journalist and participant in both World Wars deeply informed his writing lending authenticity to his depictions of courage loss and alienation. While his personal life marked by adventure and tragedy often overshadowed his literary contributions his stylistic innovations and engagement with existential themes solidified his status as a transformative figure in American letters. By pushing the boundaries of narrative form and emphasizing the power of understatement Hemingway left an enduring legacy on both literature and the cultural understanding of the human condition. unknown

25003994Europe 1989. Good to very good. Minor flaws include dust soiling toning the odd short tear stain or spot. Water stain to cover of one volume. A couple labels loose damage or staining from some of the adhesives used. A couple early tape repairs. A marvelous and meticulously organized set of records belonging to a wine tasting enthusiast names James Williams including approx. two hundred sixty 260 original wine labels. The records date between 1973 and 1986 but a couple of the loose labels have been labeled "Xmas 1999" and "Xmas 2005". The earliest wine label appears to be from 1948 Mouton-Rothschild Pauillac. Countries of origin include Austria France Germany Portugal and at least one from the United States. Williams has pasted most of the labels into his notebooks and labeled them with the following information not always consistently: date the wine was produced; dates tasted and occasionally with whom and where; and relevant comments e.g. "1987 a bit past peak but ok". A few of the labels particularly in the black notebook are not annotated. The smallest notebook contains only a couple loose labels but is much more descriptive/discursive and contains his thoughts on flavor profile and price. It also contains his thoughts about the wineries he visited on his journeys such as Chateau Giscours in Bordeaux France. Williams does not seem to have intended for these to be read by other wine tasters and wrote the comments for his own edification as evidenced by one comment from April 1974 in the small notebook: "The wine has a lot of fine dark black crud and hair like! shit". He appears extremely well informed in the manufacturing process and these records show his frequents trips through Europe in search of wines. He also makes interesting observations about the wineries he visits; for example from a June 19th 1974 entry he notes "All women operating machines". In another from a couple days before he notes "Prince Phillip about to arrive for 45 person dinner to celebrate flowering of grapes. Held at different chateau every year". Williams was probably a man of means or had friends in high places judging from some of the locations and hotels visited e.g. Hotel Meurice in Paris.Overall the records present a fantastic look into one wine enthusiast's travels and tasting adventures as well as a snapshot of the wine world in the 1970s and 1980s. Another aspect of the collection worth noting is the wide array of wine label designs and artwork present including many which were designed to reflect the local pride of the wineries.

The items are physically described below:

Single vol. binder in black pebbled cloth 10" by 7.25" containing approx. 115 leaves of lined notebook paper with over 100 wine labels pasted-in and annotated with pen and pencil. Covers Williams' tasting trips in Europe between 1973 and 1977.

Single vol. binder in blue pebbled cloth 9" by 7.5" containing approx. 150 leaves of lined notebook paper with over 140 wine labels pasted-in and annotated with pen and pencil. Covers tasting dates between 1975 and 1989.

"Diary of a Wine Taster". Single spiral-bound notebook measuring approx. 6.5" by 4.25" with approx. 60 leaves of grid paper with notes in pen and pencil.

Pink envelope 4.5" by 6.25" stamped with the Chateau Mouton Rothschild arms containing 20 loose wine labels. James Williams b.1950 worked in the wine industry in several capacities including: in a German vineyard and winery; for wine importers and distributors based in New York; and finally as manager of a liquor store in Princeton New Jersey. unknown
192843698Mohonk Lake NY 1928.
Keen William Williams 1837-1932. Autograph letter signed to M. Jacques. 1.5pp. on sheet with letterhead of Lake Mohonk Mountain House. Mohonk Lake N.Y. August 31 1928. 241 x 153 mm. Traces of mounting in left margin but fine otherwise.

A fine letter from the celebrated American surgeon William Williams Keen touching on one of his most famous accomplishments—his participation in the secret surgical operations performed on President Grover Cleveland in 1893 to remove a cancerous growth from the President's mouth.

"I am glad that you were interested in my latest observe I do not say "last" volume referring to Keen's recently published The Surgical Operations on President Cleveland in 1893 Together with Six Additional Papers of Reminiscences 1928. It was a remarkable event. When we put Mr. Cleveland in his bed what an emphatic deep "Thank God" we said!"

The reason for the secrecy surrounding the operations on the President was that the United States was then in the middle of a financial crisis caused by the inflationary Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890. Cleveland had been elected to a second term on a platform that called for repeal of the Act and his leadership was essential to that process. Feeling that any sign of ill health might be interpreted as weakness and throw support to the pro-silver side Cleveland decided to keep his illness and the operations secret.

In a postscript Keen refers to the Cleveland operation again: "Not long before the Cleveland case I had a patient who while still under the anesthetic was suddenly paralyzed!! Suppose—!"

Keen's letter also mentions his longtime friend the American physician and writer Silas Weir Mitchell 1829-1914 with whom he co-authored the classic Gunshot Wounds and other Injuries of Nerves 1864; see Garrison-Morton.com 2167 together with George Morehouse.

"How vividly your quoting this honored name brings back to me our 1900 experiences & how Weir that dear now lost friend & I sat in the seats of the mighty for the first act & then skedaddled to the Opéra Comique lest we be trapped as ignorant intruders!"

Keen one of the most brilliant surgeons of his era gained worldwide fame as one of the first to operate successfully for meningiomas large brain tumors; see Garrison-Morton.com 4866 and to develop a procedure for drainage of the cerebral ventricles. He was also the first in the United States to use x-rays clinically see Garrison-Morton.com 2684.1. During the Civil War he served as a surgeon with the U. S. Army. Keen was one of the first American surgeons to adopt Lister's system of antisepsis and wrote the first American surgical textbook based on antiseptic principles. His Keen's System of Surgery 1906-21 was the standard textbook for American surgeons in the first decades of the 20th century.
. unknown books

Annotations by Leopold Hoffer. Provenance Galsgow Chess Club Betts: 7-36 Limited to 500 copies. First edition.

The London 1899 chess tournament was without a doubt one of the very strongest tournaments ever held on British soil. Almost every great master of the day was present including the past and reigning world champions. It proved to be the swan song of the old champion Wilhelm Steinitz but for Emanuel Lasker it was a glittering success which propelled him way beyond the other grandmasters of the time. All important players were invited. Many of these players were the champions of the country that they represented. Refusals came from Siegbert Tarrasch and Rudolf Charousek illness. The businessman Amos Burn had to withdraw at the opening's day. Fifteen participants played double rounds from 30 May to 10 July 1899 except for Richard Teichmann. He withdrew after round 4 due to an eye disease. His remaining games in the first cycle were declared as lost. Rounds were played in St. Stephen's Hall. The time limit was fifteen moves in one hour. Participants were entertained by the City of London chess club at Crystal Palace and the Star and Garter Hotel in Richmond. A banquet took place in the International Hall of the Café Monico on 29 June. Lasker finished a whopping 4.5 points ahead of the group finished tied for second Janowski Maroczy Pillsbury. This is easily one of the more dominating personal performances in a tournament ever played. London 1899 goes down in history as one of the great Lasker victories along with St. Petersburg 1896 Paris 1900 St. Petersburg 1914 and New York 1924. There was a second section in the tournament won by Frank James Marshall with 8.5 out of 11. Georg Marco and Jacques Mieses were the most experienced opponents and the tournament was not all that strong.

Condition:

Glasgow Chess Club stamp liberally used through out date received and released on front end paper with secretary's initials. Edelstein A10 references an unpublished letter from Harry Duncan publisher of the Cummington Press to Stevens which reads in part: "Five copies will be mailed to you on Monday.
