177539No place: no publisher 1972. The finest writing I've done since the early days" Lahr p. 528 Rehearsal script of the author's late play premiered on 2 April 1972 and a rare commercial success for Williams at this time. The play provided the author with an opportunity to appear on stage when one of the actors dropped out during the run. Williams noted "I have to admit that I am a ham and that I loved it" Lahr p. 530. The play was expanded from the author's Confessional 1970 to become a full-length work. The Broadway production was followed a year later with a production in the West End. There have been Off-Broadway revivals in 1999 2001 and 2011. The script comprises the title page a listing of characters the script of Act 1 43 pages and Act 2 52 pages. The play was first published by New Directions in 1972. There are some minor differences between this script and the published version. Some stage directions use the language of the stagecraft "Fade in the sound of ocean wind" compared with the published "The sound of ocean wind is heard". The opening line also differs "Do you notice There" which was published as "Notice Over there". Mimeographic typescript 64 leaves 278 x 212 mm printed on rectos only additional sheets numbered "1-4a" and "1-4b". Original black wrappers front wrapper lettered in gilt two split pins. Housed in a custom blue cloth folding box. Some abrasions and minor holes to wrappers occasional minor staining to a few leaves: a very good copy. 1932182578New York: Lincoln MacVeagh Dial Press Inc. 1932. African-American scholar publishes the first scientific study of Caribbean syncretisms First edition of this groundbreaking study of Afro-Caribbean belief systems tracing their origins to Africa and following their "development both before and after the transplanting through the medium of slavery to new and fertile soil". An African-American Jesuit missionary Williams' interest in the subject began with a posting to Jamaica. This copy inscribed and with a letter to the recipient soliciting assistance with publicity. Joseph John Williams 1875-1940 a Bostonian was educated at Boston College High School the College of St. Francis Xavier Woodstock College and Loyola School New York before entering the the Society of Jesus in 1895. Ordained in 1907 he was sent to Jamaica as a missionary in 1912 spending six years there during which time he became fascinated by the anthropology and folkways of the region and of the persistence of African folklore and cultural beliefs. On his return he began the publication of a series of works on the subject of which this is probably the best known. Voodoos and Obeahs was welcomed in the American Anthropologist as "the first really scientific study" of the subject which "stands alone. and unquestionably leads the field" while the New York Times considered that "this carefully documented book will prove of great interest to those interested in magic folklore and primitive religions" 23 April 1933. The book was pitched against William Seabrook's recent sensationalist best-seller The Magic Island 1929 which Williams carefully and courteously dismantles in his introduction "It must not be supposed that what has been written is intended in any way to impeach the veracity of Mr Seabrook. Personally I am convinced of his sincerity and straightforwardness". This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "To Willard de Lue As an appreciation and remembrance J. J. Williams SJ February 7 1933". De Lue 1890-1989 was a Boston-based newspaperman local historian and radio broadcaster; a columnist for on the Boston Globe for over 60 years. In the enclosed one-page autograph letter signed of 9 May 1933 Williams informs de Lue of the signing of a contract with Allen and Unwin for a UK edition and of Dial's upcoming third printing "all within six months" asking whether he might "get in a squib through the literary editor or otherwise help publicity". Octavo. Original finely combed deep yellowish brown cloth gilt lettered on the spine publisher's cupid and lion device embossed to the front board; with light yellow typographical jacket the lettering matching the cloth colour supplied from a copy of the second printing. Binding remains glossy and sharp; light marginal toning throughout; the jacket lightly tanned and with a few marks and short closed splits along the top edge head of spine a little crumpled small chip from the front panel no loss of lettering or design; a very good copy. 1874ABC_49430Shanghai 1874. 4to. American Presbyterian Mission Press Contemporary gold-tooled red morocco with the title and author lettered in gold on the spine grey cloth sides marbled endpapers. With a lithographic title page in Chinese and a letterpress title page in English. The introduction is printed in 2 columns and the dictionary in 3. LXXXIV-1252 pp. First edition of a monumental Chinese-English dictionary the first one of this scale by an American sinologist. It consists of 12.572 characters arranged under 10.940 headword characters classified alphabetically under 522 syllables and includes the pronunciation of each character in the dialects of Beijing Canton Amoy and Shanghai as well as Mandarin and variants of Middle Chinese. This large dictionary which took eleven years to compose is considered a milestone in American sinology. The work was an attempt to combine and synthesise the achievements of Western lexicography in China in particular the method of dialect comparison while making extensive use of Chinese reference works and traditional lexicographic sources. It includes information about general and vernacular readings of characters aspects of the etymology and history of characters and variant authorised and colloquial meanings to "satisfy all the needs of a foreigner" preface. The work was intended and seen as a successor of Robert Morrison's Dictionary of the Chinese language 1815-1823 which was already fifty years old at the time. It was relatively successful and was reprinted several times until 1909.Samuel Wells Williams 1812-1884 was an American linguist missionary and sinologist In 1877 he became the first professor of Chinese language and literature in the United States at Yale University. His work as both author and teacher helped Americans gain a better understanding of the real China. With a red stamp in Chinese on the Chinese and English title page and on several other leaves small annotation in pencil throughout a short description of the work mounted on the front pastedown. The edges and corners of the boards are scuffed the joints are somewhat weakened but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. The work is lightly browned throughout a water stain at the top edge. Otherwise in good condition.l Cordier Sinica col. 1599. hardcover

19471211131947. First Edition. RILKE RAINER MARIA. Five Prose Pieces. Cummington Massachusetts: Cummington Press 1947. Tall octavo 8-3/4 by 9-1/2 inches original half brown calf and marbled boards uncut. $1400.Limited first edition of five select prose works in English from Rilke's early years featuring the inclusion of Erlebnis Experience together in print for the first time with Die Turnstunde Gym Period Begegnung Encounter Puppen Dolls and UrGerausch Primal Sound number 178 of only 203 copies on Van Gelder Oxhead paper 271 total with original woodcut-engraved illustrations by artist Wightman Williams.""Rilke was one of the most gifted and conscientious artists who ever lived"" Atlantic. This first edition of Five Prose Pieces brings together for the first time in English five early essays and stories. Its opening work Die Turnstunde Gym Period was first issued in German in 1902. Drawing on his experiences as a student at military schools Rilke came to view the story ""as one of his best prose pieces from his early years. The story's narrative brilliance lies mainly in its terseness its ability to suggest rather than describe in detail"" Metzger Companion 71. This is followed by Begegnung An Encounter in which Rilke portrays a chance meeting between a man and a dog on a road ""where one meets nobody."" This highly evocative work first issued in German in 1907 captures the dilemma of a man ""desperately seeking a way out of the prison house of language"" even as the dog's silent yet ""happy expectation"" seems to express a desire to share that prison Kari Driscoll. The third work Puppen Dolls was first issued in German in 1914 after Rilke saw the dolls created by German artist Lotte Pritzell. It provocatively offers a ""key to understanding his own attitudes towards the theme of division within the self"" Anthony Stephens. The book's fourth work Erlebnis An Experience was written in 1913 but not first issued in German until after Rilke's death in 1926. Here in its first appearance with these other select works Rilke's ""purely interior"" narrative signals an ""ecstatically unified world an idea that is to recur in several of Rilke's works"" Metzger 84. The final work Rilke's autobiographical UrGerausch Primal Sound was first published in German in 1919. In it Rilke recalls the ""homemade phonographs"" of a former classroom: its ""'markings traced on the cylinder'the proto-writing of the past"" Jacobus Time-Lines. First edition first printing: featuring the inclusion of Erlebnis An Experience not present in the 1943 volume titled Primal Sound & Other Prose Pieces which consisted of the other four works and illustrations by Paul Wieghardt instead of Wightman Williams. Translation by Carl Niemeyer. Schroeder Rainer Maria Rilke in America: A Bibliography 31. Trace of bookplate removal.A very elusive copy in fine condition. hardcover
