18960008032Le Roy New York. Good. 1896. On offer is an interesting little diary from 1896 that details the efforts of a young man to start his own business. The volume measures 4 inches by 2 1/2 inches and contains 92 diary pages several memoranda pages and a number of information pages. It is in good condition and all pages are intact. The diary is about 60% complete and the handwriting is legible. The author is Clarence H Williams and he lives in LeRoy NY about half way between Buffalo and Rochester. There is little biographical information but context suggests that he is a young man who is now living on his own. Right from the outset we learn that he is trying to establish a viable small printing business: "I sent 26 boxes of goods away today" Jan 7 "I went down and run 1000 books tonight. I earned about $1.30 today. So today aint bad" Jan 11. However he doesn't rely only on his small business. He purchases chickens to run a poultry business Jan 11 and engages in other activities such as cutting wood with his father. He bought a Simplex Typewriter to help in his printing business noting: ". I have got 814 words of my advertising piece written" Jan 19. It is slow going and despite some thoughts of quitting he persists. In April he notes: "I drew a check for $3.10 from the firm."May 1. The diary is blank between May 29 and Aug 10. During that time it seems he was working to build a circular saw and he notes on Aug 11: ". My circular saw works tip top. " Aug 11. Keeping in line with his continual searching out information for new ideas and businesses he refers to another 'how to' book he has received: ". I bought a book called Picture Making in the Studio last Monday and I just received it today." Aug 15. He comments about looking for work but when he gets an offer its not a lot: "Mr. Hooker wants me to do his chores this winter but I don't know about it. There is only 50 ¢ a week in it." Oct 10. The year ends much as it started - with Williams struggling along with his small printing business some chickens and work that he finds around the area. For a historian looking at life in turn-of-the-century rural America this little diary is an excellent resource. Not only does it detail Williams daily efforts but if mentions a number of other local and regional business as well as many individuals - each of whom can be followed up on to build an even more detailed picture of life in rural up-state New York.; Manuscript; 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF 19TH CENTURY 1890S CH WILLIAMS; CLARENCE H. Spine elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Spine lightly faded still a bright clean and unusually well-preserved copy.

William Combe 1741-1823 " is particularly remembered for the verses that he wrote to accompany Rowlandson's coloured plates and drawings of the adventures of 'Dr Syntax'. The first of these works The Tour of Dr Syntax in Search of the Picturesque a parody of the popular books of picturesque travels of the day and particularly of the works of Gilpin appeared in Ackermann's Poetical Magazine in 1809 and in 1812 as a book which went into many editions. Dr Syntax is the grotesque figure of a clergyman and schoolmaster who sets out during the holidays on his old horse Grizzle to 'make a TOUR and WRITE IT' and meets with a series of absurd misfortunes. This was followed in 1820 by The Second Tour of Dr Syntax in Search of Consolation for the loss of his wife and in 1821 by The Third Tour of Dr Syntax in Search of a Wife. The three Tours were collected in 1826. Combe also wrote the letterpress for Rowlandson's The English Dance of Death 1815-16 The Dance of Life 1816 and Johnny Quae Genus 1822 another Syntax story" The Oxford Companion to English Literature.

"The good-natured moralising schoolmaster became a public character and a general favourite. Syntax was the popular title of the day and shop windows displayed Syntax hats Syntax wigs and Syntax coats. Its success produced a host of parodies and spurious imitations. Among them the best perhaps is the Tour of Dr. Syntax through London with twenty plates published in 1820.Other imitations were Syntax in Paris which appeared in 1820 with seventeen plates; and the Tour of Dr. Prosody in Search of the Antique etc. in 1821 with twenty plates by W. Read" Martin Hardie p. 168.

"The author of the text of Doctor Syntax in Paris is unknown but although this is manifestly in plates and general style a Syntax imitation the text might conceivably be genuinely by Combe" Abbey Travel.

Charles Williams fl. 1797-1830 "was the chief caricaturist for Fores the printseller and was a follower and copyist of James Gillray. 1953150111c. 1953. Rare Christmas card of Ernest and Mary Hemingway inscribed by Mary to Taylor Williams. A circa 1953 folding Christmas card depicting Ernest Hemingway holding a cat and Mary Hemingway sitting on the porch of Finca Vigia holding another cat with a dog at her side. The inside of the card is printed "Merry Christmas Ernest and Mary Hemingway." Inscribed on the inside by Mary the card reads in full "Our dearest Colonel - Clara Spiegel gave me a fill-in on you when I was in Chicago in September and from what she said you're flourishing - also surrounded by beautiful red-heads. Watch yourself boy. Saw Hveill H. Ike yesterday and and gave you brief but big build-up. We leave here - Paris - in about a week for Venice - address: Gritti Palace Hotel - Grand Canal - Venice. Let us hear from you - Papa shooting pigeons magnificently in Cuba before we left - me third-rate. Dear Taylor - we always miss you much love. Mary." The recipient was Hemingway’s great friend Taylor “Beartracks†Williams the well-known Sun Valley hunting and fishing guide. Hemingway’s friendship with Williams dated back to their meeting in Idaho in the late 1930s after which Hemingway frequently returned to Ketchum before eventually settling there. Mary Welsh Hemingway 1908–1986 was an American journalist and writer who became Ernest Hemingway’s fourth wife in 1946 and remained his partner until his death in 1961. Having worked as a foreign correspondent during World War II she brought professional experience and organizational skill to Hemingway’s later life accompanying him during his final years in Cuba Europe and Idaho. After Hemingway’s death Mary Welsh Hemingway played a central role in shaping his posthumous reputation by editing and overseeing the publication of several unfinished works. In fine condition. The piece measures 7 inches by 5 inches. Ernest Hemingway 1899–1961 was one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century whose concise prose style and exploration of universal themes reshaped modern literature. Known for his works such as The Old Man and the Sea A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls Hemingway developed a narrative voice that captured the complexities of human struggle and resilience with stark simplicity. His experiences as a journalist and participant in both World Wars deeply informed his writing lending authenticity to his depictions of courage loss and alienation. While his personal life marked by adventure and tragedy often overshadowed his literary contributions his stylistic innovations and engagement with existential themes solidified his status as a transformative figure in American letters. By pushing the boundaries of narrative form and emphasizing the power of understatement Hemingway left an enduring legacy on both literature and the cultural understanding of the human condition. unknown
1900C0416
ii232 pages with diagrams index and tables. Quarto 10 1/2" x 6 3/4" bound in half leather over original boards with gilt lettered spine label. Annotations by Leopold Hoffer. Provenance Glasgow Chess Club Betts: 7-36 Limited to 500 copies. First edition.

The London 1899 chess tournament was without a doubt one of the very strongest tournaments ever held on British soil. Almost every great master of the day was present including the past and reigning world champions. It proved to be the swan song of the old champion Wilhelm Steinitz but for Emanuel Lasker it was a glittering success which propelled him way beyond the other grandmasters of the time.

All important players were invited. Many of these players were the champions of the country that they represented. Refusals came from Siegbert Tarrasch and Rudolf Charousek illness. The businessman Amos Burn had to withdraw at the opening's day. Fifteen participants played double rounds from 30 May to 10 July 1899 except for Richard Teichmann. He withdrew after round 4 due to an eye disease. His remaining games in the first cycle were declared as lost. Rounds were played in St. Stephen's Hall. The time limit was fifteen moves in one hour. Participants were entertained by the City of London chess club at Crystal Palace and the Star and Garter Hotel in Richmond. A banquet took place in the International Hall of the Café Monico on 29 June.

Lasker finished a whopping 4.5 points ahead of the group finished tied for second Janowski Maroczy Pillsbury. This is easily one of the more dominating personal performances in a tournament ever played. London 1899 goes down in history as one of the great Lasker victories along with St. Petersburg 1896 Paris 1900 St. Petersburg 1914 and New York 1924. There was a second section in the tournament won by Frank James Marshall with 8.5 out of 11. Georg Marco and Jacques Mieses were the most experienced opponents and the tournament was not all that strong.

Condition:

Glasgow Chess Club stamp liberally used through out date received and released on front end paper with secretary's initials. Some soiling through out. Rebound in attractive three quarter leather with the original vignette laid on front cover. A good to very good copy of a scarce tournament title.
Longmans, Green & Co hardcover

Armorial bookplate of Harry Bradfer-Lawrence on front pastedown. An excellent copy.

A lively and richly illustrated military satire My Cousin in the Army forms the companion volume to Mitford's earlier and highly successful Johnny Newcome in the Navy 1818 transferring the comic misadventures of the naïve recruit from sea to land. Cast in brisk octosyllabic verse the poem offers a vivid and often irreverent portrait of army life in the immediate aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars blending anecdote caricature and social observation in a manner closely aligned with the Regency taste for humorous narrative.

The hand-colored aquatints by Isaac Robert Cruikshank and Charles Williams - both central figures in the golden age of British caricature - provide much of the work's enduring appeal. Their plates animated and theatrical capture the follies vanities and absurdities of military life with a sharp eye and a lively palette placing the work firmly within the tradition of illustrated comic narratives popularized by contemporaries such as the Doctor Syntax series and Life in London.

Mitford himself remains one of the more colorful and tragic figures of the period: a former naval officer present at major engagements of the French Revolutionary Wars later reduced by dissipation and instability to a precarious literary existence. His writing - energetic unpolished and often drawn from lived experience - retains an immediacy that lends authenticity to the comic episodes described.

A pleasing copy of a work that stands among the more engaging illustrated satires of the post-Napoleonic period enhanced by an attractive Rivière binding and distinguished provenance.

Abbey Life 370; Tooley 166.
