186413458Paris: Dusacq & Cie. Editeurs 1864. Hand-coloured lithograph after a painting by Linder. Very good condition apart from some mild rippling a small loss in the top margin and a few skillfully repaired tears in the bottom margin. A beautifully coloured humorous plate that was most likely part of a series published by Dusacq of images by various artists depicting railway related scenes.

During the mid-nineteenth century the technological advancement and financial prosperity of France under Napoleon III hastened the development of the railway and other modern modes of transportation such as the omnibus. These improvements brought about a culture of mass tourism as members of various classes flocked to the railroad to take day trips. An archetypal symbol of modern life the railway station became a popular subject during the period and was represented and parodied by artists such as Honoré Daumier and William Powell Frith. It was an ideal place to observe a varied cross-section of society and the idiosyncrasies of human behavior. In the tradition of Daumier's satiric railway scenes from the 1840s and 1850s Linder exploits the comic possibilities of this bustling modern subject in this charming print. The title 'Pleasure Train' was most likely intended as an ironic play on words since pleasure is the last thing enjoyed by the swelling crowd of people on the platform many of whom scream in frustration as they are pushed and prodded in an effort to exit and enter the train. A pupil of the celebrated artist Charles Gleyre Philippe Jacques Linder was a genre and portrait painter who regularly exhibited works at the Salon between 1857-1880.

Cf. A dramatic view of fishermen at Worthing from Philippe Loutherbourg's great work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain".

This impressive aquatint is plate six of Phillip Jacques Loutherbourg's seminal work "Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain." This accomplished text is comprised of six large aquatint views engraved after Loutherbourg's acclaimed paintings. The work which was first engraved in 1801 by J. C. Stadler was later re-engraved in 1808 by J. Hill. Reminiscent of Rowlandson's superb paintings this image depicts fisherman rowing out from the seashore on a stormy day. The son of a court painter in Darmstadt the versatile artist Philippe Jacques Loutherbourg was born in Fulda Germany and was a pupil of J. H. Tischbein and Carle Vanloo and Francis Casanova the elder in Paris. His romantic landscapes battle scenes portraits and biblical subjects were highly esteemed and lauded by influential colleagues such as Diderot. He frequently exhibited at the Salon and became a venerated member of the Académie Royale in 1767. In 1771 he moved to England where he was employed as the principal scenery designer at London's Drury Lane Theatre. His creative and minutely detailed sets revolutionized the genre of scene painting and he soon began dabbling in costume design. Loutherbourg once again astounded contemporaries in 1782 with his pioneering invention of the "Eidophusikon" a novel variety of moving panorama that was accompanied by music. His substantial and varied oeuvre also included book illustrations and a series of aquatints of British scenery that was published in 1801 and 1805. Recent bookplate of John Fowles to FEP slight loss to lower corner of leaf I4. The first edition of a contemporary account of the Haitian Revolution from the perspective of the defeated French colonists. The insurrection began in 1791 with the enslaved people of Saint-Domingue now Haiti rising against French colonial rule. The revolt ended in 1804 with the Haitian people gaining independence from France thereby becoming the first country to be founded by those formerly enslaved. The book is primarily a defence of French actions during the conflict and in particular the conduct of military commander Donatien-Marie-Joseph de Vimeur vicomte de Rochambeau 1755- 1813. In 1801 Rochambeau was appointed to lead an expeditionary force against Saint- Domingue in an effort to restore French control. He proceeded to wage a war of extermination massacring thousands.
