Light wear; near fine.</p> <p>An example of early 20th-century American burlesque ephemera: a promotional handbill for the Messenger Theatre’s revue Scenes in a Sanatorium starring the Boston Belles. The program features a full comedic cast with characters such as “Doctor Dippy a Professor in Dope†“Jake Krameyer a sausage maker†and “Mille le Tigre†alongside named actors. It lists musical numbers a follow-up satire titled Two Married Men and additional variety acts. </p> <p>At various points during the evening musical numbers including “Jungle Town†“Base Ball†“Chew My Chewing Gum†and “Old Time Rag†were also performed.</p> <p>An upcoming production of Lena Rivers is advertised for Monday October 12 informing our suggestion that this broadside dates from 1908.</p> <p> </p> unknown

1932List3665Chicago Illinois: Egyptian Press 1932. Folio 5 pp. Wraps torn at seam slightly musty odor good condition. An unrecorded composition by a woman who travelled through the midwest claiming to be a descendant of Cleopatra using the name Princess Dalla Pattra. The details of the princess are murky as she disappears from newspaper records after 1930 when she admitted in court to using a manager to stage a publicity stunt in St. Louis.1 In her hearing she also admitted that she had been arrested for embezzlement in San Francisco in 1920. Two years later rather inexplicably this songsheet was published in collaboration with a Max Lander who according to patent records was English. <br /> <br /> The introduction to the song reads: “Hear the desert winds shriek and the tom-toms in the distance thrilling with the weird undertone of the desert night then the calm as the Royal Egyptian Maiden sings her love song to her desert prince.†We find no record of the composition in OCLC or anywhere else or of the princess in newspapers after her 1930 court appearance with the only findable record of her continued impersonation a patent registered in 19312 and this song sheet. <br /> <br /> 1 “St. Louis Wonders if it Got a Fooling†Kirksville Daily Express and Kirksville Daily News April 6 1930.<br /> 2 “Only to be with you just for a day†Catalog of Copyright Entries Part 3: Musical Compositions Library of Congress Copyright Office 1932 22760 accessed at ​​https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_ZS5jAAAAIAAJ/page/1165/. 1869List3680Boston: Koppitz Prüfer & Co. 30 West St. cor. Mason Street; New York: Wm. A. Pond & Co 1869. Folio lithographed cover with hand-coloring. Stitching removed at margins suggesting this was bound in a larger volume else about fine. Signed by Holt next to the illustration. Near Fine. A finely executed example of post–Civil War American sheet music lithography depicting stage performer Elise Holt in masculine costume top hat and cigar in a style typical of Boston commercial lithographic production of the period. The imagery situates Holt within the established nineteenth-century tradition of theatrical male impersonation or “breeches roles†in which female performers adopted masculine dress and gesture as part of fashionable stage personas. Archival records identify Holt as a ballet dancer who later appeared as a burlesque performer and died while touring in 1873 after contracting typhoid fever.1 She led the Elyse Holt Burlesque Troupe. Photographic evidence held by Digital Commonwealth likewise shows Holt posed in masculine stage attire indicating that male impersonation formed part of her professional repertoire. The song sometimes seen as “Tassels on her Boots†extolls the virtues of women’s clothing. Overall a nice lithographic example of women performing in men’s roles showing a fairly obscure but widely touring performer whose career was tragically cut short by illness. 192858476Leyton UK: R. Spurden Rutt 7 Co. ca. 1928. Oblong 4to. 16 pp. Photo illustrations throughout. Black printed softcovers gilt decorative lettering on front cover yapp edges NF. First edition of this unusually scarce catalogue marketing the several models of Spurden-Rutt’s electric Organestra pipe organ intending to compete with Compton Wurlitzer & Christie organs. The Palace Cinema Slough Theatre in Buckinghamshire and Super Cinema in Oxford had ordered models by the time this was issued and they provided an exceptional accompaniment to the silent movies playing at the time. Spurden-Rutt 1881-1960 apprenticed with Alfred Kirkland of Holloway opened his business in 1899 at the age of 18 and lived in his factory with his living room doubling as a board room. In order to impress clients and visitors with how many staff he would have them run around removing and changing coats appearing in assorted different rooms. He continued as an organ builder until 1959. A benefit for Mr. James Wallack an actor and later manager with a Napoleon related play 'The Little Corporal; or the School of Bonaparte' relating to his time at the military school at Brienne and the celebrated snow ball fight led by Napoleon in the winter of 1783-4 with a 'terrific bombardment with snow balls!' Also appearing were Cooke's Equestrian establishment and his 'celebrated stud of ponies' promising a 'grand attack of Lilliputian cavalry'. Bright clean and unmarked; fine. While other editions of such programmes exist we could not locate any instances of this programme particular edition. Most is loosely laid in. An early scrap book belonging to bookman and publisher Ernie Bulow documenting his theatrical experiences as cultural arts instructor / script writer at Wingate High School in Fort Wingate New Mexico. <br /> <br /> After receiving an English degree in the sixties Bulow worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs resided in Gallup N.M. and taught English at Fort Wingate on the Navajo Reservation. Subsequently he received a doctorate from the University of Utah and he returned to Gallup where he traded in Indian jewelry and kachinas and opened his bookstore. unknown

An early playbill - marking the eighth performance - for Charles Edward Horn's 1786-1849 'Serio-Comick Opera' The Persian Hunters which was first staged just nine days earlier on August 13 1817. Based upon a Persian tale in which a Sultan conceives of the notion of romantic love seeking a partner who was ignorant of his royal station and attracted to him for what the La Belle Assemblee described in a contemporary review as 'his mere person'. The periodical notes that the 'scenery is peculiarly good pleasing and characteristic; the music is appropriate accordance with the scenery characters and story'. The building which later housed the English Opera House had been used to stage exhibitions and performances of various types including at different points those of the Royal Academy and Madam Tussauds since 1765 but was not licensed as a patent theatre until 1809. Rebuilt in 1816 by Arnold it re-opened and operated under this name until 1830 when it burned down and later replaced by the Lyceum Theatre. The summer of 1817 marked a time of great innovation for the London stage; both the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the English Opera House introduced gas lighting throughout replacing candles - changing the atmosphere of the production and theatre ownership a somewhat safer proposition. The proud inclusion of 'The GAS LIGHTS are now introduced over the whole Stage' as the headline of this playbill demonstrates the marketing emphasis that was put on the endeavour. . Loaded with advertisements for contemporary businesses there are about two baseball cards' worth of information about the actual films being shown at the theatre! An excellent and well-preserved snapshot of local history. The Columbia was built in 1910 and closed in 1928 so while this pamphlet is undated we can place it within that time frame. 2004132996Los Angeles: Pandemonium Theatre Company 2004. An archive of 10 original posters for productions staged by Ray Bradbury's Pandemonium Theatre Company from 1988 to 2004. The plays were performed in Southern California predominantly at The Court Theatre Falcon Theatre Theatre West The Raven Playhouse and Melrose Theatre. <br /> <br /> The archive includes posters from 10 productions including "Fahrenheit 451" "The October Country" "Past Present & Future" "The Time of Going Away" and "Drunk and In Charge of a Bicycle." and his Irish play "Falling Upward!" "Falling Upward!" was one of Bradbury's favorite plays and especially as he advanced in age he was know to encourage its frequent production simply for the joy of being able to see it again. <br /> <br /> Bradbury was an avid playwright and a familiar and enthusiastic presence in the Southern California theatre circuit near his home. In 1963 he and director Charles Rome Smith founded Pandemonium Theatre Company. The two friends would go on to work with the company together for the next four decades until Rome's death in 2004. This archive is a solid representation of the company's latter half before Smith's passing and Bradbury's hearing loss which would necessitate that he stop attending performances. <br /> <br /> Posters approximately 11 x 17 inches. From a raft the shooters shoot at deer swimming in the water. A small person has climbed into the tree next to the deer / stag. The swimming deer are being looked at by hunters. People in Victorian style.The sheets are in good condition some light browning. Dit zogenaamde ""waterjagen"" gebeurde in Frankrijk en Duitsland waar edelen vanuit boten deelnamen aan drijfjachten waarbij herten de rivier of een moeras werden ingejaagd. Dit jagen was een ritueel van dominatie een uitdrukking van macht rijkdom en verfijning. In grote jachtdomeinen werden er speciale gebieden ontworpen met vijvers moerassen of rivieren. Drijfjachten werden georganiseerd waarbij jachthonden en drijvers herten opjoegen tot ze de rivier of het moeras in werden gejaagd. Vervolgens kwamen de edelen vaak in versierde boten of vlotten om het dier te schieten of te observeren. Original buff wrappers printed in red on front cover; 274pp. Professional paper repairs at spine ends; expected tanning to exterior and text; still a superlative copy overall and quite uncommon. Housed in a custom-made cloth clamshell box. <br /> <br /> A terrific association copy of this acclaimed late work by Weill for which he won the inaugural Tony Award for Best Original Score in 1947. Street Scene is perhaps the apotheosis of Weill's socially-engaged musical theater a blend of operatic and theatrical elements with which he first experimented in his collaborations with Bertolt Brecht of the Thirties including Three Penny Opera and The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. Street Scene based on Elmer Rice's naturalistic working-class drama of the same name was especially noteworthy for including lyrics by the African-American poet Langston Hughes whom Weill sought out specifically to "lift the everyday language of the people into a simple unsophisticated poetry" quoted by Jane Vial Jaffe in her program notes to a 2008 production. This was Hughes' first experience writing for musical theater.<br /> <br /> Street Scene premiered at the Adelphi Theater in New York in January 1947 and met with critical success though its high production costs forced the production to close in April. The show has never been revived on Broadway but it has been staged regularly by operatic companies including revivals by the New York City Opera in 1959 1979 and 1990. <br /> <br /> Inscriptions by Weill are uncommon; it's an honor he appears to have bestowed only on very close friends and collaborators. In this case the presentation is to Joe Littau the well-known pit conductor who was at this time the Musical Director for Weill's 1948 musical "Love Life" which ran on Broadway from October 1948 to May 1949.
