Lightly browned minor chipping paper flaw to top left hand corner with small amount of loss otherwise clean. Theatre playbill for the first night of 'Spirit of the Waters! Or Undine and the Goblin Page' starting on the 9th March 1829 with "entirely new music scenery dresses decorations most extensive and entirely nouvelle machinery and unique effects" a "fountain of real water" and "combined splendour of fire and water united in unequalled brilliancy!". The actors included Mr. Leach "the extraordinary dwarf who has been engaged expressly to aid this piece and who will introduce a variety of astonishing feats peculiar to himself and excelling every display of extraordinary agility hitherto witnessed!". Brown and white illustrations. Binding mis-stapled; leaves detached with slight tear at gutters from pulling through the upper staple; slight bump to lower corner. Program for the annual New Year's variety show at San Quentin offering everything from the acrobat trio Sing Lee Sing and "whip crackers" Buck and Chickie to actress Toy Yat Mar The Skating Millers and 3-year-old singing sensation Lyndell Sandeen. Numerous San Francisco clubs provided entertainment as well -- Sinaloa Cafe Bimbo's 365 Club President Theatre and Charlie Low's Forbidden City -- and Hitch King served as the Master of Ceremonies. In addition to the list of performers the program includes an introduction by warden Clinton T. Duffy a tribute to Harry Ettling the founding producer of the show who died in 1947 from the Men of San Quentin and short introductions to the show's new producer Elmer Langmaid and Hitch King.A scarce record of prison entertainment and the local community's contributions to it. 'Macbeth' with 'High Life Below Stairs' approximately 55mm x 76mm in size dated 21st July with an image of a woman holding a dagger and a chalice; 2. 'The Wonder' with 'Atheling Castle' approximately 54mm x 77mm in size dated July 14th with an image of a dancing woman holding a mask; and 3. 'The Castle Spectre' with a farce called 'Transformed or No' approximately 65mm x 57mm in size dated July 9th with a coloured image of a partially clothed woman in the clouds holding a banner in which the plays and dates are inscribed n.d. but probably very late eighteenth century or very early nineteenth century. All three slightly trimmed each with play titles and date to front in ink and with 'Admission Ticket Not Transferable' to reverse lightly browned 'Castle Spectre' with soiling to top left hand corner but generally clean. Dalby theatre was the private playhouse of Edward Hartropp 1758-1808 at Little Dalby Hall Leicestershire it was demolished in 1945. 'High Life Below Stairs' was a comedy by James Townley; 'The Wonder' was a play by Susanna Centlivre set in Lisbon; 'Atheling Castle' was possibly based on the gothic novel by Ann Radcliffe 'The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne' first published in 1789; 'The Castle Spectre' was by Matthew Gregory Lewis Monk Lewis first performed in 1797; and 'Transformed or No' has eluded our searches. The BM has all three of these tickets with others pasted on to a sheet of paper C2. 1535-1543 Yale has both 'Macbeth' with the same image used for another play 'Isabella' with 'Lover's Quarrels' and 'Castle Spectre' but not as far as we can tell 'The Wonder'. Publisher's green cloth backed spider web textured boards stamped in gilt in illustrated jacket. Shelf wear along bottom edges of boards else a near fine copy in like jacket with some light toning and corner wear. <br /> <br /> Early collection of illustrated poetry from the Michigan-born puppeteer and gay novelist Forman Brown. Brown established the Turnabout Theater with his group Forman's Yale Puppeteers in Los Angeles in 1941. The venue quickly became very popular garnering celebrity attention from the likes of Greta Garbo Mary Pickford Douglas Fairbanks Aimee Semple McPherson and others. <br /> <br /> In 1933 Forman wrote what is considered the first American novel to present the gay experience in a healthy manner a semi-autobiographical work called Better Angel. Spider Kin collects his early poetry some of which was published in The Dial The Reviewer and other periodicals. A programme for a performance of Goethe's Faust on May 10th 1886 at the Lyceum Theatre then under the management of Henry Irving 1838-1905 with Bram Stoker 1847-1912 serving as acting manager. It has been argued that the titular character of Stoker's Dracula 1897 was in part inspired by Irving’s portrayal of Mephistopheles in a production of Faust; and indeed the works of Goethe more broadly were highly influential in particular his poem 'Die Braut von Corinth' 1797 that introduced the vampire to German literature. . Minor toning; panels slightly mis-folded; Very Good. <br /> <br /> TRAM under the direction of Mikhail Sokolovsky was a working theater for proletarian youth focused on producing plays of working-class life promoting Marxist ideology. This program issued for the group's 1933 tour of the Soviet Union promotes the season's two offerings Alexei Tolstoy and Aleksandr Starchakov's "The Right to Live"; and Sokolovsky's adaptation of Denis Fonvizin's 18th-c. comedy "The Minor." Also illustrated are scenes from past productions - A.I. Piotrovsky's "Rule Britannia;" a performance by Ivan Dzerzhinsky's music and dance ensemble "Green Workshop" and two others. A rare program; very little primary material relating to TRAM has appeared in the marketplace and the current program does not appear to be held by any OCLC member institution. The theatre is famous for its interior design including the Indian-inspired foyer with sitting Buddhas and domed ceilings presented in the photograph on offer. The role of the titular wife Marianna was performed by Miss Acosta who often appeared in tandem in venues across the country alongside fellow comedy actress Miss Fitzpatrick. Includes Holst's self-published first book "25 Stories" 1960 and a flyer from a reading shortly after publication at The Living Theatre in New York on February 1 1961. <br /> <br /> Holst was already a well-known and gifted speaker by the time "25 Stories" was published with the help of his wife abstract expressionist painter Beate Wheeler. He frequently held audiences with his psychedelic and surrealistic tales and would give performances at Judith Malina and Julian Beck's The Living Theatre selling copies of "25 Stories" at the show. Holst's work continued to fascinate audiences and "25 Stories" was reprinted in 1993 by Station Hill Press as the better part of a career-spanning collection "The Zebra Storyteller."<br /> <br /> Book: tall handbound perfect-bound wrappers 4.5 x 14 inches. Spine ends chipped cracked front hinge dampstains and soiling overall Good plus and still serviceable surviving copies of this fragile book are scarce in any condition. <br /> <br /> Flyer: 8 x 12.5 inches. In the fifties and sixties the company became an epicenter for revolutionary culture performing both original and repertory works. The company produced often radical stage productions and adaptations of works by artists and writers such as Bertold Brecht Gertrude Stein Jean Cocteau William Carlos Williams T.S. Eliot Pablo Picasso Luigi Pirandello and Federico García Lorca among others and laid the foundation for New York's robust underground art scene in the ensuing decades. <br /> <br /> The Living Theatre and its founders were the subject of the 1983 documentary "Signals Through the Flames" directed by Sheldon Rochlin.<br /> <br /> Photographs generally 7 x 5 inches to 12 x 8 inches. Staged in Rome at the Teatro Alberico circa 1979.<br /> <br /> Founded in 1947 in New York by Julian Beck and Judith Malina The Living Theatre is the oldest active experimental theater group in the United States. In the fifties and sixties the company became an epicenter for revolutionary culture performing both original and repertory works.<br /> <br /> "Seven Meditations" was largely written in response to the imprisonment of several members of the company under the Medici dictatorship in Brazil in 1971 drawing on their experiences of suppression and torture in the Brazilian prison system. The show addressed seven different types of actions relationships or statements governed by power including sexuality capitalism private property and law enforcement and attempted to begin a dialogue with audience members regarding ways to move forward from these dynamics. <br /> <br /> As with many of the group's performances "Seven Meditations" proved controversial and even courted obscenity charges largely due to a section of the show depicting a simulated torture scene-as shown in the poster on offer.<br /> <br /> 39 x 55 inches. It was the recipient of three Obie Awards for Best Production Best Design and Best Direction. Jonas Mekas would film a 1963 performance of the play after it had closed released in 1964.<br /> <br /> A realistic and anti-authoritarian depiction of a US Marine Corps prison based on playwright Kenneth H. Brown's experience being held in a brig for 30 days while serving with the Third Marines at Camp Fuji in the 1950s.<br /> <br /> The Living Theatre revived the play to inaugurate its new permanent location on the Lower East Side in Manhattan on March 29 2007 directed by Judith Malina.<br /> <br /> Self wrappers front wrapper integral with the title page noting credits for playwright Kenneth H.
