A curious bildungsroman of a suicide told as though taken from his journal; the protagonist seems to fallen into poverty after defying his father's wishes to study law and failed in his love of a woman leaving him alone to wander the streets of New York alternating with nights in study over his book collection. His suicide note is found on an open volume of Francis Bacon. To call this personal story of life on the streets of New York a proto-Beat novel the ardent and introspective hero forsakes polite company leaves behind a copy of Byron that has been fished out of the river etc. is of course a bookseller's conceit--but one perhaps closer to the mark than most such claims. Per Atwater 2306 the entry for a 1912 Star Publishing Co. edition of Henry M. Lyman's Practical Home Physician these plates "issued in a brown paper envelope not present for this copy. . . . This slender unbound atlas depicting the female pelvis organs of generation and gravid uterus is nearly identical to the Plates illustrating Maternity inserted into the back pocket of Prudence Saur's Maternity . . . and the Plates illustrating Tokology inserted into the back pocket of Alice Stockham's Tokology . . . also published in Chicago. Though intended to accompany Lyman's Practical home physician the Descriptive plates apparently was not issued with the text and had to be acquired for an additional $2.00."
