Louis W. Chobar aka Lee Vaugh 1896 - was sentenced to life in prison and became inmate #7280 at the Nebraska State Penitentiary after murdering a farmer for raping his wife in 1917 although there might have been rummors the latter had had a consensual affair with the man. He would eventually become a prison librarian mail room manager soloist in the prison band with a saxophon he had bought with his saved full-year prison wages and had taught himself to play and theater director - all the accomplishments with the constant encouragement of Warden William T. Fenton 1872 - 1939 - prison reformer and proponent of improvements to the inmates' quality of life. Fenton established a greenhouse sports teams the above-mentioned band etc. and under his guideship it was said the prison was one of the best-managed penitentiaries in the entire United States. Chobar's life sentence was eventually commuted to 25 years and he was released in 1935. s. n. unknown books

A delightful naughty and even a bit vulgar poem comprised of six 4-line stanzas it advertised the Monroe Daily Independent - a small regional newspaper in Wisconsin at the end of the 19th century. It read in part: "Dogs delight to bark and bite / And little birds to sing / But all that flies can find to do / Is ;;::::.:;:: on everything.The one that makes the largest spots / They deem for king is fit - / They crown him with a golden crown / All garnished o'er with ;;:;:;;::;;;;:::;;:;;;;;:;:;:;" Below the poem came the clincher: "You will find no fly ::::: on the Monroe Daily Independent although it costs you only 10 cents per week. An interesting advertising piece it was offered to customers with the purchase of Kolynos Dental Cream "that whitens teeth 3 shades in 3 days." The brand of oral care products was created by Newell Sill Jenkins in 1908 and became extremely popular in the 1930s and 1940s. Among other things it sponsored several well-loved radio programs and was mentioned in several classic literary works including "The Catcher in the Rye" and "Midnight's Children."
