1890001281Boston Mass.: Joseph Burnett Co. 1890. Early first edition n. d. ca 1890 according to Massachusetts Southborough Historical Society's collection records; a similar edition classified by OCLC as ca 1900; 3 1/2 x 6; pp. 20; brown wraps illustrated and ruled in red and black; a bit of wear along spine; slight ripple to wraps and pages; illustrated; very good. An uncommon early cookbook and advertisement for Joseph Burnett Company of Boston and their famous products. In 1847 a prominent lady had walked into the office of of Joseph Burnett then chemist. She was anxious to be able to use vanilla flavoring for her desserts and she asked him if he could help her as the only way known at the time was the messy and unsatisfactory business of cutting vanilla beans wrapping them in linen and dunking them like tea bags into whatever dessert mix required flavoring. Burnett took the challenge spent months experimenting and eventually came up with what would become the first Vanilla Extract ever sold in this US. In 1858 he would partner with William G. Edmonds and the company would become known as Joseph Burnett & Co. Their innovative spirit and ability to continuously introduce new products Almond Rose Nutmeg Peach Celery Cinnamon and many more extracts would distinguish and set them apart from the competition. The book contains various recipes for delicious desserts including American Kisses Chocolate Pie homemade candies etc. Also featured are helpful cooking and mixing hints. 192316688Chicago: Covici-McGee Co. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1923. 2nd printing. Hardcover. NOISBN . spine slightly turned a bit of dust-soiling to top edge a couple of lightly bumped corners one-time owner's address label on front pastedown; jacket moderately edgeworn spine browned small chip at top of rear panel; jacket a teensy bit shorter than the book apparently made that way. "A novel of protest written by a young apostle of revolt against the present system of education in the colleges." Although the author is not identified by gender the book seems to have a definite feminist slant telling of the travails of a young graduate student teaching Freshman English while dealing with "the undercurrent of malice and politics" at the university. She finds that "the departments are run by old men who have lost touch with the students" and feels herself "powerless to defeat the red-tape and apathetic disregard of the older men." Neither the city nor the specific university in the book are identified but add the Chicago imprint to the description of the school "on the shore of the great lake in the broad Middle-West" do the math and get back to me about where YOU think it is. The author of the 1962 study "The College Novel in America" speculated that the book was "possibly by Zoë Flannagan" but gives no indication who the hell "Zoë Flannagan" might have been. Thanks for nothing. . Covici-McGee Co. hardcover books

1900002902S. l. : s. n. 1900. Very good. Silver gelatine photograph n. d. ca 1900 - a small penciled-in manuscript note on verso "1900 - 1910"; mounted on a card stock mat; photo 5 x 7 mat 10 x 12; image with minor age-toning and wear - in very good to near fine condition; mat with small chips to corners - in good to very good condition. A bit of a mystery the photograph presumably depicted a crew at a lumber yard or part of a rail yard where material for train cars was manufactured. The two visible rails mounted on concrete piers were most probably previously-scrapped tracks - repurposed to be used for stacking lumber. Although most of the men looked to be middle-aged and even older the first and the thrid ones from the bottom right appeared to be boys no older than 10. s. n. unknown books
