1854002549S. l. New York: S. n. 1854. First Edition. Very good. Manuscript n. d. ca 1854; 12 x 8; single sheet folded pp. 4; text to first two pages only; brown ink on pale-blue stock; old crease lines; paper separating along fold not affecting text; very good condition. The New York House of Refuge was the first juvenile reformatory and detention center in the US established in 1824 on the Bowery in Manhattan under the auspices of the Society for the Prevention of Pauperism in an attempt to segregate young petty offenders from adult inmates in the prison system. A committee of wealthy philanthropists was appointed including John Griscom James W. Gerard and Hiram Ketchum which privately raised the funds to form the institution. Outgrowing its accomodations it was relocated twice first in 1839 and then in 1854 to Randall's Island where it could house 1200 poor and destitute children and petty juvenile criminals. They were rehabilitated and "trained in habits of industry" ie. shoemaking and chair caning for the boys and cooking and sewing for the girls. The current report most probably written immediately after the 1854 move gave an account of and described in detail how and where the raised funds were used including grading and building a sea wall reclaiming land from the river the East River erecting various buildings installing heating water and sewer pipes using the Croton Aqueduct system and so on. 1893S13228Paris: 1893. 1893. Spine title: Arts & Metiers :: Mecanique I. Three books in one possible 2nd volume not known but implied by the spine title. 4to. 208; 324; 542 pp. Numerous mathematical diagrams. Facsimile of original handwritten manuscript. Early quarter maroon calf backed red & black marbled boards; extremities rubbed. Occasional minor tears some repaired foxing. Ownership signature of Garde. Very good. THE ENTIRE TEXT IS PRINTED IN MANUSCRIPT FACSIMILE. No person or organization shows their name as being responsible for this deeply scholarly and detailed work on all facets of analytical mechanics. Some possible clues for its origin might possibly be a part of the history of the Ecole Nationale de Cluny Descartes's system of mechanical force or possibly the work of Alfred Flamant engineer & professor at l'Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees & l'Ecole Centrale who wrote a treatise Mecanique Generale 1888. I could not find a match for the text to identify this item but it is for someone else to discover. See possibly: H. Carteron "L'idee de la force mecanique dans le systeme de Descartes." 1900001640Coney Island NY: Feltman's 1900. Softcover. First edition n. d. ca 1900; 5 plain brown stiff card stock pieces original pictorial envelope. Puzzle pieces with various length and shape from approx. 1" to 2" in fine condition. Envelope a bit brittle with a horizontal cut running to upper margin flap still holding; instructions printed in the lower half; good to very good condition. An unusual promotional piece for what was once an iconic Coney Island restaurant. In 1867 Charles Feltman owned a pie-wagon and delivered freshly baked pies to the various saloons and eateries along the beach on Coney Island. Seeing that his customers also wanted savory sandwiches in addition to the sweet desserts he asked the wheelwright who had built his wagon to outfit it with a tin-lined chest to keep bread rolls fresh and a small charcoal stove to boil sausages. The hot dog was born. Feltman's invention did not go unchallenged but despite rumors that he used dogs' and dead horses' meat for his sausages his hot dogs became so popular by 1874 he had his own restaurant. Feltman's greeted almost a million customers in the first decade of the 20th century and its all time record was serving 100 000 people and 40 000 hot dogs in a single day. The Great Depression put the breaks on the success of the restaurant not because of the food but because people could not afford the subway ride let alone the price of a meal at Feltman's. Charles' sons sold the restaurant in 1946. The puzzle an entertaining advertisement piece when completed presumably made the letters F and T and an upward arrow. 1880001864S. l. Paris : s. n. 1880. Softcover. First edition presumed n. d. ca 1880 ; single card stock sheet folded pp. 4; one large and 4 smaller swatches of silk affixed to paper; a table with sizes and prices to back wrap; a few small spots not affecting fabric; very good condition. A sample booklet of beautiful Chinese silk for scarves imported by an unidentified company from Asia. After an epidemic of silkworm diseases hit the European silk industry in 1845 the price of cocoons increased. That paired with the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and the shortage of silk in France reduced the price of importing Asian silk and prompted companies to offer Chinese and Japanese fabrics to the fashion-conscious European ladies and gentlemen. 002789Unbound. Very Good. Winsome collection of manuscript color illustrations and light text for part of a children's story. N.d. circa 1920s. The first card or what is presumed to be so bears the legend "To My Valentine" with the name of "Ann Warren Stewart" written on a mailbox. Since Ann is a character in these drawings we can assume she was not the author or illustrator but rather perhaps a recipient or dedicatee. The artwork is in the style loosely of Mabel Lucie Attwell or the Sally Dick and Jane readers. While it is simple and perhaps even a touch naive it is also very polished and almost certainly was executed by an adult. And so we see a small child fetching a giant heart-shaped valentine from a mailbox a toddler stumbling off a chair an older child trying to interest a baby in toys and an older toddler climbing up and down a high chair. Each of these cards is fit for framing and hanging on a wall. Now disbound there are three margin holes that once kept them in a binder. Light scattered soiling does not mar the preciousness and charm of the illustrations each 11 by 9 inches 29 by 22 cm each on heavy card stock.

unknown books

1822002763Baldwin ME: By the author 1822. Very good. Manuscript; 7 1/2 x 6; laid paper folded and sewn with a string to form a notebook; pp. 8; text and tables to pp. 1-4 in brown ink; fore-edge unevenly trimmed; light spotting mostly to margins; in very good condition. An early 19th century document it addressed Joel Libby one of the surveyors of highways in the town of Baldwin for the year 1822 and presented him with a list of assessments of estates in the form of large detailed tables of the people in the town and their respective proportions of seventy two dollars and twenty seven cents "to be expended in labor and materials upon the highways" within their limits. It listed allotments of ten cents per hour for men's labor and ox labor and ten cents per hour for a good plough and six cents per hour for a good cart. The manuscript also stated that any deficiencies from people not paying would be put in the next assessment for a town tax. The town of Baldwin now part of the Portland-Biddeford metropolitan area was originally known as Flinstown and was founded by a grant to the survivors of the Company of Captain Flint of Concord Mass in 1774. It was incorporated in 1802 and named after one of its earliest settlers Loammi Baldwin. At the time the town was said to be "destitute of a meeting house and minister" and that the first roads constructed through it were in a "dangerous condition for teams carriages and horses." Apparently in the following years efforts had been made to improve the condition of the roadways. By the author unknown books
