A scarce and early example of lithography which was sold by subscription and issued in four parts 10 plates to each part. Here we have the final 3 part with the 30 plates numbered 11 to 40. Each flower casts a delicate shadow and stands out in relief. Although Ten Coloured Lithographs is the title there are actually 40 full-page plates printed from stone by R. H. Nimmo. AL-61
While most people probably probably aren't aware that chocolate boxes c1920 would often come with a hand tinted photo of a beautiful woman on it my dad had a large collection of the actual boxes. Thus I've been seeking the boxes out for years. So when I saw this album for sale at a market I had to have it.

As a sample book it is large 17 x 13 inches and quite heavy thanks to the reinforced binding. The box tops are heavy too and most have elaborate designs and bows as well as the photos. Many of the pages have glassine between them although the first page is missing and thus the photos have rubbed a bit against the endpaper. One photo has been partially ripped off. It's a bit difficult to find these boxes in any sort of condition let alone the very-good to fine condition most of these tops are in. Many of the pages have notations as to how many pounds of chocolate would fit in each box. As you'll see the five pound boxes must have been quite large.

Fidelity Chocolate had a store at 923-927 Washington St. in Boston. I found a number of ads for them a patent for chocolate candies and some business listings but not much more.

This is an unusual piece of advertising and photographic ephemera.

19000000268Germany 1900. 4to 23.0 x 30.9 cm. Original quarter black pebble cloth and green paperboards in very good condition. Collation: 30 stiff gray paper leaves sewn to backing. Each leave has12 red ink rectangles in three horizontal rows on each side. The upper portion of each seed packet is glued to the gray paper within an individual red ink margin. Each packet has a printed number at the top and complete taxonomic name beneath the flower image. There are 651 seed packets in alphabetical order glued to both sides of each of 27 leaves and the first row of the 28th leaf. The remaining leaves have culture information for each of 292 plants representative of those illustrated on the seed packets. The culture information for each genus is printed on small squares of paper glued in alphabetical order to the stiff gray paper. Each packet has chromolithograph image on each side. The front has the flower and the back has an image of the entire plant. All packets are in very good condition.

Collection of seed packets with chromolithograph images of plants and flowers. This is an exceptional and scarce collection of early printed seed packets collected in a single volume. It is likely that a traveling salesman in Germany would present such an album to nurseries to illustrate the available seeds for ordering. Most of the plants are annuals or biennials. This album is in very good condition and probably not used in the field. This suggests that it may have been for reference in a seed company's office. hardcover books
178426075Londres i.e. Paris: Et se trouve à Paris chez Pissot 1784. First Edition. Octavo; pp. 6264pp.; 4 A-Q8 R4; woodcut title page vignette head- and tail-pieces; full contemporary red imitation morocco double ruled in gilt flat spine decorated in gilt. Extremities rubbed with boards occasionally exposed contemporary blue ribbon marker detached but present. A Very Good attractive copy. Pechmeja's best-selling prose poem published anonymously under the patronage of one Madame de Beauvau presumably the Marquise de Boufflers. The work enjoyed both enthusiastic and scathing reviews from the most celebrated literary figures of the time. Readers admired the work's literary beauty and its touching description of friendship while others found fault with the moral and economic message which would be described as socialist in the modern sense. Among the most notable Télephe detractors was the author Jean-François de la Harpe who wrote "The author seems like Rousseau to make a crime out of private property without which no society could exist. He doesn't want children to inherit their fathers' fortunes as if inheritance wasn't a natural right and as if the fathers themselves didn't work for the sake of their children" my translation. Others including the relatively enthusiastic reviewer the Baron von Grimm were nonplussed by Pechmeja's dour description of the fate of man and the injustices of oppression maintaining that while virtue must always be exercised little happiness can ultimately be experienced even with the purest intentions my paraphrase of Michaud and Grimm. Grimm rejects comparisons made to Fénelon's novel Les Aventures de Télemaque 1699 saying that if Marmontel's Les Incas 1747 is the Télemaque for the age of the encyclopedia then Télephe is the Télemaque for economists. Within three weeks of publication sales had dropped dramatically and while the book was reprinted once in the 1790s and subsequently translated into English and German Télephe never re-experienced its initial popularity.
