Mitchell Sagewood July 26th 1867".'Rural Studies' is a charming volume on country architecture and landscape gardening described by the author as a "tract for homeliness".Illustrated with the occasional in-text illustration. One leaf of adverts to the front and three pages of adverts to the rear. Written by Donald Grant Mitchell better known under his pseudonym Ik Marvel. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities with a small chip and a repair to the tail of the spine. A few light marks to the boards and spine. Very light rubbing to the joints. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Author's inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound. These lectures were used by the author as his way of obtaining subscriber's to help build his telescope which he believed was needed in the US as there were non. He worked 6 years before the cornerstone of his observatory was laid in 1843 by President John Quincy Adams with appropriate ceremonies. On this occasion Mr. Adams made his last great oration. This was the first great popular observatory ever erected in the United States. Bound in publisher's brown embossed cloth spine lettering gilt some chipping to head some wear through to corners internally clean and bright. With a second bookplate of William M. Herr.
