The fifth edition, Printed by Thomas Wright, Leeds, 1785', folding table, 6 woodcuts in the text and 2 folding leaves all showing table settings (folding leaves are creased and two torn and repaired on verso), D2 with a closed tear, a little foxed and browned throughout, recent quarter calf, marbled boards, spine blind-tooled. 8vo., First Edition thus, with frontispiece and full-page illustrations in the text, wanting front free endpaper, page edges tanning slightly as often; original blue cloth, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy in lightly age-soiled dustwrapper. Bright copy of the CBC edition of David's third book, and the last of the trilogy that changed the nature of English cookery forever. First published in 1954, it presented an entirely novel world of taste, ingredients and cookery to a ration-oriented and culinary sombre Britain still in the aftermath of WWII. This edition contains the text of the substantially revised second edition (1965) and retains Guttuso's evocative illustrations. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.
8vo., First Edition, with engraved frontispiece and 13 engraved plates, title and fore-edges mildly spotted, recipe in a neat contemporary hand on frontispiece recto; original dark green pebble-grain cloth, red roan back, wanting B7 (pp. 15-16), neatly rebacked with large fragments of old backstrip gilt laid down, yellow endpapers, a very good, firm copy of a very scarce work. RARE; AND APPARENTLY UNRECORDED IN THIS GUISE. This may well be a third edition, with an original title, of Walsh's 'English Cookery Book'. This latter work was first published in 1858 (Cagle 1045) with a second edition in 1859 (see Simon BG 1595). A possible substantiation is that all three works acknowledge [in the title] the assistance of 'a committee of ladies'. The present work is considerably more illustrated. Further to confuse, Walsh states in his Preface (dated 1857) that the present work, together with its possible forbears, are all themselves extracted from his 'Manual of Domestic Economy', the bibliography of which is equally labyrinthine. Not in BLPC; Cagle (but see 1045); Simon BG (but see 1595). We have able to find no copy in any of the standard bibliographies.

In 8°; 308 pp. e una c. di tav. posta in antiporta con bell’immagine di un maiale e 24 pagine di pubblicità editoriale poste in fine al volume. Elegante legatura degli inizi del XX° secolo in tutto cartoncino rigido con motivi rosso e blu e titolo in oro su fascetta in pelle blu al dorso. Esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione ed ancora in barbe. Quarta edizione con qualche aggiunta rispetto alle precedenti di questo celebre scritto di culinaria del noto fisico scozzese Alexander Hunter nato ad Edinburgo intorno al 1730. L’opera contiene centinaia di ricette culinarie sia di antipasti, primi, secondi, zuppe, cioccolata e bevande, vini, omlette ecc. L’autore, figlio di un farmacista, studiò a Londra , a Rouen (sotto Le Cat ) e a Parigi ( con Petit ). Si laureò ad Edimburgo in Medicina nel 1753 ( tesi di laurea , ‘De Cantharidibus ‘). Dopo aver praticato l’arte medica per alcuni mesi a Gainsborough, e pochi anni a Beverley, si trasferì nel 1763 a York nel 1763 dove rimase fino alla sua morte avvenuta nel 1809. Fu tra i principali fondatori del celebre istituto psichiatrico di York chiamato Lunatic Asylum (terminato nel 1777) e vi lavorò per lungo tempo. Nello stesso anno in cui apriva i battenti il Lunatic, Hunter venne accolto nella Royal Society. FU autore di diversi scritti di medicina, agricoltura e fisica anche se il suo testo di maggior successo è proprio questo di gastronomia. L’opera stampata per la prima volta nel 1804 vide diverse edizioni fino al 1820. Questa quarta edizione, di quasi 50 pagine più lunga della precedente, è quella considerata come definitiva. Publisher's original title-blocked brown cloth. Boards exceptionally bright and clean. No inscriptions. The merest hint of foxing to the fore-edge otherwise a near fine copy in a good price-clipped dustwrapper which is browned to the spine as often found and chipped to the spine ends affecting the publisher at the base of the spine and also in one place to the right-hand edge of the spine partially affecting the "L" of CHANNEL. In 8° (18,5x11,5 cm); (10 compresa antiporta figurata), 279 [i. e. 379], (1) pp. Bella legatura coeva in mezza pelle con titolo in oro su fascetta al dorso.Filetti in oro al dorso. Piatti foderati con bella carta marmorizzata (qualche minima strofinatura ai piatti). Tagli leggermente spruzzati. L'incisione in antiporta rappresentante la celebre "bilancia di Santorio" all'antiporta è applicata su una carta diversa rispetto a quella utilizzata per il frontespizio. Bella e rarissima edizione napoletana, un solo esemplare censito in ICCU, che presenta le annotazioni di Lorry di questa celebrerrima opera di medicina. Noto anche come Sanctorius o Santorio Santorii o Sanctorius da Padova o Santorre Santario. Studiò all'Università di Padova dove si laureò in medicina nel 1582. Dopo la laurea esercitò in Croazia e alla corte di Massimiliano re di Polonia. Tornato nella Repubblica Veneta nel 1599, si stabilì a Venezia dove esercitò la medicina pratica con grande consenso e successo e dove fece amicizia con Sarpi, Sagredo e Galileo. Il suo adattamento del pendolo alla pratica medica fu probabilmente ispirato dalle discussioni con Galileo sugli esperimenti di quest'ultimo con i pendoli del 1602; lo strumento fu descritto in un libro pubblicato da Santorio alla fine di quell'anno o agli inizi del 1603. Nel 1611 divenne professore di medicina teorica all'Università di Padova. In quella città pubblicò descrizioni di congegni termometrici che probabilmente avevano tratto ispirazione dal termoscopio di Galileo. Nel 1624 rinunciò alla cattedra per dedicarsi alla pratica privata. Fu un pioniere nell'impiego delle misurazioni fisiche in medicina; il suo dispositivo più famoso fu una grande bilancia usata per studiare le trasformazioni metaboliche in soggetti sperimentali tra i quali vi fu Galileo. Fu seguace del metodo sperimentale di cui comprese l'importanza e la necessità anche per le discipline biologiche. Considerato il fondatore della iatromeccanica, fu autore di importanti studi sul metabolismo e sulla termoregolazione umana dimostrando l'esistenza della perspiratio insensibilis ed introducendo in medicina l'uso del termometro clinico che ideò. Santorio inventò altri strumenti come il pulsilogio o pulsametro capace di tradurre in numero l'apprezzamento individuale della frequenza del battito cardiaco ed altri congegni atti a determinare con esattezza matematica i parametri vitali umani. L'opera qui presentata ebbe traduzioni in numerosissime lingue. L'opera è considerata come una dei primi esempi di medicina speriementale. L'opera rientra anche nella bibliografia gastronomica per l'ampio capitolo "De cibo et Potu". Cfr. Castiglioni (p. 471). FULTON "History of Physiology" p. 161: "Santorio introduced the use of instruments of precision for making his measurements and is regarded as the founder of the modern study of metabolic processes.". Esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione.
