1938355490724036London 1938. First Edition. Tunbridge Wells Kent: A Romary & Coy Ltd nd 1938. First UK Edition. A softback not issued with a dustwrapper. String-bound. The book is un-dated but from the web we believe that it was published in 1938 as per the copy in the New York Public Library. A VG copy with a faint crease to the bottom right-hand corner of the front cover. A no rubbing foxing or loss. A very nice copy indeed of this fragile production. Romary's had quite a reputation as a manufacturer of specialist biscuits and it is said that they continued to be made until the early 1980's as the late Queen Elizabeth the Second enjoyed them. They are now unavailable. Romary's were founded by Alfred Romary in 1986 in Tunbridge Wells in 1862 as Biscuit Makers and his fame spread when in 1876 Queen Victoria visited the shop and so they gained a coveted Royal Warrant. Uncommon. Photographs/scans available upon request. unknown

"Common sense realistic recipes using real ingredients in reasonable quantities.for British cooks I cannot imagine a better more economical cookbook" GoodReads. Kitchen in the Hills is a simple cook book compiled by Mrs West during her years living in relative poverty up in the hills in their little cottage in rural Wales in the 1960's. Between each chapter the author reminisces about her life in a humourous and affectionate way.you feel like she has never quite left the hills even to this day. Elizabeth & Alan had to stretch every penny they had to last a very long time and she recalls the simple but nutritious meals that sustained them both through the lean times after they had jacked it all in leaving the rat race to try their hand at self-sufficiency and a completely different way of life. Most of the recipes contain herbs vegetables or WEEDS that they picked from the garden or meat that they received in payment for Alan's odd jobs. Photographs/scans available upon request. Isabella Beeton's final work, the 'Dictionary of Every-Day Cookery' was first published in 1865 and is second in importance only to 'Household Management'. Following her death in the same year, her husband's publishing house of S.O. Beeton was acquired by Ward Lock & Tyler [subsequently Ward Lock] who naturally set about reissuing all the 'Beeton' cookery titles. The 'Dictionary' was retitled initially the 'Every-Day Cookery and Housekeeping Book' and from 1907 'Mrs. Beeton's Every-Day Cookery'. The present work is, we believe, the third edition with this latter title and the last before Hermann Senn's major revision of 1923. 'Mrs. Beeton's Every-Day Cookery, as it now stands, contains one-third, or 200 pages, more than the previous edition, and is offered at the same price' [Preface]. Although greatly expanded, it is effectively the last edition based on the core text as Isabella herself compiled it. See Driver, p.102 and our own bibliography (in progress).
Folio broadside (375 x 270 mm), printed on one side only, the top third consists of letterpress text explanation of tables of 'the price of the bushel of wheat, and baking' below, margins cut close but a very nice copy.

4to., First Edition, with 8 coloured plates and numerous line illustrations in the text; cloth, gilt back, a very good, clean copy in the dustwrapper. Grigson's classic collection is very scarce in this condition.
Sm. 8vo., ?Fourth Edition, pin holes in front free endpaper and half-title, some light marginal age-staining; original boards, boards and backstrip lettered in black, neatly recased, a very good, firm copy. With 3pp publisher's catalogue at end, and two small items of related ephemera loosely inserted. 'This volume meets a want long felt. Vegetables, Fruits, etc, constitute the half of our daily food: the present work is upon the best possible preparation of this half. Cookery-books exist in abundance; but they relate almost exclusively to the preparation of dishes from animal food' (Publisher's advertisement). Smith's delightful compilation was first published in 1866. There was a second issue in 1876 and a third in 1884, so this is probably the fourth edition. The last edition may be that of 1890. Very scarce, especially in this condition.
8vo., with coloured frontispiece, 11 coloured plates and 48 plates in monochrome, fore-edges very lightly dust-soiled; original decorative brown cloth, upper board and backstrip blocked in blind and lettered in black, a remarkably well-preserved copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter chafed (not affecting lettering) at head of backstrip. With advertisement front endpapers in sepia and 11pp of similar advertisements at end. 'All About Cookery' (first issued under this title in 1871) is a derivative of Isabella Beeton's final work 'The Dictionary of Cookery'. The 'Dictionary' was first published in 1865 and designed to full the gap between her classic (but highly-priced) 'Book of Household Management' and the cheaper 'Cookery'. A key feature of the work is the arrangement of its subject matter - recipes, menus, implements and so on - in alphabetical order for easy reference. It is her only work so presented and to our belief the first compilation of its kind. The Edwardian and Georgian editions are particularly comprehensive in their scope and coverage. SCARCE IN THE DUSTWRAPPER. See Driver, p.101 and our own bibliography (in progress). Cagle 563 cites the 1903 edition with fewer plates.
