The rare first edition the this cookery book which was wholly devoted to American receipts. Hannah Peterson n?e Bouvier, published this work anonymously along with all editions published during her lifetime. A preface to a later edition, written by her husband after her death, indicates that 'When this work was prepared for the Press, she declined to let her name appear as the author, from her great dislike to notoriety, observing that "a woman should never be known outside of her own home."' Lowenstein, 593 (fourth edition is the earliest listed); Cagle, 604 (eighth edition); no copy of this first edition has been found on OCLC.

First published in 1783, Farley's work was a popular and continuing success, reaching its twelfth edition in 1811. Principal Cook at the London Tavern, Farley claims that his work 'unlike so many which are without method or order, is marked by perspicuity and regularity'. However Cagle reveals that Fiona Lucraft provides a detailed account of the author's plagiarism from Raffald and Glasse. Farley's name appears below the portrait from the ninth edition (?) onwards.
