32 pp. Original printed self-wrappers. 8vo. Important brochure devoted to the so-called discussions about trade unions, which took place in late 1920 and early 1921. Most notably, the group around Trotsky held the view that trade unions should be run by ideological leaders, whereas Lenin's position eventually shifted to a more independent role for trade unions. - Two small tears to spine; a good copy.
32 pp. Original staple-stitched self-wrappers. 12mo (160:110 mm). Pamphlets such as these are rarely encountered in such good condition and without any ownership marks. KVK, OCLC show five copies, all in the US.

Deeply interesting often inspiring and intensely instructive Deluxe limited edition number 247 of 265 copies signed by the author on the title page and handsomely bound by Zaehnsdorf from the first printing sheets of the first US edition 1968. "Lord Montgomery's stimulating book must surely take its place as a classic commentary on the history of warfare. It is the fruit of a lifetime spent in the study and practice of war and it bears the authority of one who will without doubt be numbered among the great commanders. Its greatest merit springs from the author's understanding of the human factor in war. That it is permeated with his particular and well-remembered idiosyncrasies the freshness and vigour of his approach to any subject will only enhance its undoubted value as a deeply interesting often inspiring and intensely instructive book" Howarth p. 166. 281 pages. Author signed and inscribed this copy to John Dumont upon front free endpaper. "In this presentation, it will be shown that all components within every system, including all primary measurable forms of mass-energy and all complex components derived therefrom, function perpetually in accordance with the laws of motion in absolute freely-moving-body environments. It will also be shown that the bonding forces of any structural frame of any particle are nothing more and nothing less than the stability that results from pure vector mechanics in equilibria, functioning as freely-moving, composite frames, and that the stability is conserved through the instant mutual exchange of kinetic-energy-momenta... Therefore, all events should be considered purely as mechanical phenomena, and should never be considered as general or abstract phenomena." - from Introduction. Includes over a dozen black and white figures. Unmarked. Moderate wear. Binding intact. Gilt lettering upon navy backstrip and front board moderately rubbed but remains legible. A sound copy. Book

18496119London: Not Published 1849. First editions. Spine sunned and a large patch of discoloration to the rear board; joints cracked but holding firm. Occasional marginal foxing but overall fresh with the author's occasional handwritten corrections. Each printed privately Law's poetry titles are each scarce with OCLC reporting 15 10 and 8 copies respectively. Drawn together here with feminist political associations Lady Colchester bestows the works on Mary the second Marchioness of Salisbury nee Sackville-West who was an active Tory in addition to overseeing a salon that included Charles Darwin and Benjamin Disraeli among its visitors.

The author of several privately printed poetry collections in addition to published translations Elizabeth Susan Law Abbot Lady Colchester was noted in her own time for deploying "anecdotal self-deprecating and ironic" tones that complicated her otherwise polite literary output Comic Women's Poetry of the 19th Century. The three books combined here demonstrate that tendency. Folded within seemingly common upper-class topics are reflections on intelligent women's loneliness in a marriage economy that devalued their selfhood in the opening poem Le Beau Ideel of her volume dedicated to Lord Colchester; on the ways a woman's appearance might cause society to overlook her "rarest gifts.a head with heart combin'd" in the dedication of her volume to the late Sophia Countess Darlington; and on exercises of musical lyricism and translation in the volume dedicated to Joseph Jekyll the political raconteur best known for ensuring that his friend Ignatius Sancho's biography reached publication and spread the story of his birth during the Middle Passage and his life as a free Black intellectual.

Even Lady Colchester's recipient speaks to her political interests. Mary the Marchioness of Salisbury was the second wife of the Marquess; and she was noted for her public engagement with political and intellectual figures including Benjamin Disraeli and Charles Darwin. Knowing of the Marchioness' own intellect and ambition her choice to present these three books speaks to the deeper meanings hidden within her own writing.

Jackson 193.3 and 193.6. First edition.

Frederick Law Olmsted made extensive tours throughout the region from 1852 to 1857. In 1853-1854 with his brother John he made a celebrated trip across Texas. His route took him from Natchitoches Louisiana across East Texas to Austin then south through San Marcos and New Braunfels to San Antonio. Following a side trip to Boerne and Sisterdale the brothers made their way to the coast at Indianola returned to San Antonio and then traveled to Eagle Pass on the Rio Grande where they made a brief foray into Mexico. Retracing their steps to San Antonio they headed east through LaGrange Houston and Beaumont and left Texas at Turner s Ferry on the Sabine River.

During the trip Olmsted wrote letters that commented on all phases of town and country life in Texas fifteen of which were published in the New York Daily Times. Three years after the trip the letters served as the framework for a book written as much by his brother John as by Olmsted himself entitled A Journey through Texas; Or A Saddle-Trip on the Southwestern Frontier: With a Statistical Appendix. The first printing 2500 copies of the book nearly sold out within one month of publication and eventually became a major source for historians of Texas and slavery.

Condition: Rubbed stained and faded corners slightly bumped light foxing previous owner's name to title and end papers else about very good.
Dix, Edwards & Company hardcover
