4to (146 x 182 mm). (2), 13, (1) pp. Elaborate 20th century mottled calf by Riviere, spine tooled and lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Yellow edges. First printed edition, repurposing for the context of the beginning Civil War what is here given as a letter to Charles I (dated November 1629), signed by Heath as Attorney General, which warns of "rumours against your Majestie" and that an unknown person has written "a false seditious and pestilent discourse" concerning the King's revenue and the balance of power between government and monarch. The entire text is based on the early Stuart-era "Propositions to Bridle the Impertinency of Parliament", a project initially presented to King James in 1614 "to help aggrandize royal power through prerogative taxation and military despotism modelled on Italian lines" (Millstone, p. 320). As early as in 1629, the "Propositions" had been strategically recirculated through scribal networks "by Sir Robert Cotton and his friends as though it were part of the Duke of Buckingham's plot against the English state. In the 1630s, the 'Propositions' was embedded in Attorney General Heath's indictment of the Cotton circle and circulated again. Heath's bill, containing a text of the 'Propositions', was printed in the spring of 1642 under the title 'A Machavillian Plot'. The title was ambiguous: was the 'Machavillian Plot' the Propositions' scheme to extend the king's power, of the plan by ill-affected persons to raise fears and jealousies among the people, as Heath's bill charged?" (ibid., p. 320f.). In 1646, the text would see yet a further iteration, rather fantastically re-issued as "Straffords Plot Discovered". - Joints very slightly rubbed, upper joint starting to split. Very small piece torn from the lower blank corner of B3 but otherwise very clean and crisp. Provenance: bought by Maggs Bros in February 1964. Wing H1339. Halkett/Laing IV, 2. OCLC 12232819. Noah Millstone, Manuscript Circulation and the Invention of Politics in Early Stuart England (Cambridge, 2016), p. 321.
16mo. 52 pp. Illustrated original wrappers. Extremely rare German anti-fascist "Tarnschrift" (a clandestine pamphlet or "camouflaged book"), here masquerading as a brochure advertizing a facial skin care cream: in fact, it contains the text of a speech delivered on 3 August 1935 by Maurice Thorez, the leader of the French Communist Party, warning of the dangers of the rise and spread of fascism. - In perfect condition. Gittig, Tarnschriften 1933-1945 (1996) 0289.
Large 4to. 2 vols. bound in one. XVI, 384 pp. (4), 371, (9) pp. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. First edition. A historical treatise on the commerce and trade of the Dutch Republic, the causes of its prosperity in the past, the reasons for its present decline, and the means for recovery. Most bibliographers attribute this book to the French lawyer Accarias de Serionne (1709-92), an opponent of the ideas of the philosophers and the Physiocrats. It has, however, also been attributed to the Dutch jurist, philosopher and bookseller Elie Luzac (1723-96) who published a Dutch book (Hollands rijkdom, 1780) which was only nominally a translation of the present French work. In the preface to the Dutch adaptation, Luzac wrote that he wished to demonstrate "in which way [...] such a book should be treated [...] even more so because [...] so many had thought him [Luzac] for the author of this [French] book'. An octavo edition appeared the same year. - Very light wear to top and foot of spine, wants the spine label. A strong and bright copy on large, untrimmed paper. Kress B.96. Einaudi 4767. INED 13 & 2987bis. EHB 1245a.

Bound in modern vellum. 8vo, [14] pages+ 286 columns, [14] pages+1336 columns. In French. TItle translates as The Grand Thresor, or Dispensary, and antidotary both general and special, or particular of remedies serving the health of the human body. [Originally] Presented in Latin and Now Translated into French and Enriched with Annotations & Notes ... With a Brief and Easy Method of Extracting Faculties From Purgative Medicines. Not in Caillet, Ferguson; Krivatsy 1259 (1609), Duveen, 613 (1609). Two volumes bound together, as issued, with separate title pages. Includes tables, charts and illustrations. One of the most prolific pharmacopoeia of his time, mixing medical prescriptions and alchemy. An important early 17th Century treatise in two parts, one dealing with alchemy and the other with pharmacopoeia; this French translation wasproduced by Jean Du Val, doctor of Issoudun. The work describes a number of pharmaceutical preparations: oils that beautify the face, potions to moisten the stomach, waters that warm the chest, cerates, scents, tablets. At the end a short and easy method "d'extraire les vertus et facultez des medicaments purgatifs et de separer les formes des metaux et mineraux (to extract the virtues and facilitate purgative drugs and to separate the forms of metals and minerals). The author, Johannes Jacob Wecker was a Swiss physician and philosopher. He worked as a doctor from 1566 and wrote a number of works about medicine, some of which were in both French and Latin. Doubtless fleeing accusations of sorcery, Wecker moved to Basel after having published Les Secrets de Wecker. For a number of years, he worked as a professor of logic at the local university. He published Antidotarum generale, a work about alchemy. His work is known for the elaborate bibliography on chemistry-alchemy. He also reported the first known case of diphallia. (wikipedia) OCLC: 14298187, OCLC lists 9 copies worldwide. Faint blindstamps on blank endpapers. A few period notes in 17th Century hand on title page; ink has burned through paper in one small blank area, small hole on title page. Six pages in final essay on mineral and metals extraction include period marginalia. Worming to upper margin of 30 leaves, in a few cases just touching the top chapter title text. Some light staining to pages, Very Good Condition Overall. (Med-1-6)

Brief catalogue description mounted to verso of first flyleaf, erroneously attributing the arms to Marie Louise de Bourbon-Penthièvre (1753-1821). 8vo. (16), 267, (5) pp. - (Bound after) II: [The same]. Historie der gravelike regering in Holland. [No place or date, ca. 1662]. (16), 264 pp. Title-page engraved. Includes, from p. 207 onwards (with separate half-title): Grondig berigt van 't Nederlands oproer, zo onder de hertogin van Parma, als den hertog van Alba. Rebound in slightly oversized full vellum. First edition of "Interest", the author's chief work on political economy: an analysis of the miraculous economic success of Holland, the leading province of the Dutch Republic. De la Court establishes the economic and political principles on which that success was based, identifying free competition and the republican form of government as the leading factors contributing to the wealth and power of his home country. The book still counts as one of the 17th and 18th centuries' preeminent textbooks of economic and political freedom. - Bound with this is a variant edition of same author's anti-monarchist history of the Netherlands, which appeared in the same year. The Dutch economist and businessman Pieter de la Court (1618-85) pioneered modern thinking about the economic importance of free competition and was an uncompromising advocate of republicanism. - Inner hinges broken, but still an attractive volume. I: Wildenberg 1041. - II: Wildenberg 1052. OCLC 914270513.

8vo. 2 vols. (2), 302 pp., final blank. (2), 392 pp. Contemporary calf, giltstamped double red label to prettily gilt spines. All edges red. First French edition. Matthew Decker (1679-1749) was born in Amsterdam but grew up in England and became a successful merchant, a director of the East India Company and a member of parliament. He wrote two important books on trade: "Serious considerations on the several high duties which the nation in general, as well as trade in particular, labors under, with a proposal for raising all the publick supplies by one single tax" (1743) and the present one, originally published in 1744 as "Essay on the causes of the decline of the foreign trade, consequently of the value of the lands in Britain, and on the means to restore both". The implication of Decker's title, namely that British foreign trade was declining, appears inaccurate, but his arguments were mainly meant to show the possibility of improvement of British trade. His chief proposal was to abolish import duties, and in his book he attempted to refute the objection that this would diminish the value of land. As McCulloch states, "few if any of the older works on commerce [...] have so many well-founded claims to attention [...] or embody so many enlightened, ingenious, and original views". Adam Smith owned a copy of this book: while his library catalogue attributes it to William Richardson, current research argues strongly in favour of Decker's authorship. This French translation is the work of J. P. de Gua de Malves, a mathematician also credited with other writings on economic subjects. - Upper spine-end of first volume slightly damaged, bookplates removed from pastedowns. Still a nice set. 38 SS. und einige weiße Bll. sowie 15 SS. Typoskript. Privater Halbleinenband der Zeit. 8vo. Wilhelm Meier.
Small 4to. 63, (1) pp. Original printed wrappers with mounted photogravure. Rare émigré edition of this most notorious of anti-semitic slanders. This edition is particularly remarkable for its direct link to the predominantly Jewish make-up of the new Bolshevik government, as illustrated on the front cover: the mounted photogravure, "taken in 1918 and forbidden in the USSR under threat of execution", shows the "Jewish government in Russia" with Leon Trotsky in the front row. - The text of the 24 'protocols' originates from Nilus's 1911 edition, with the addition of an extensive introduction by the publisher, Duke Mikhail Gorchakov. The 'Protocols' are an antisemitic hoax purporting to describe a Jewish plan for global domination. It was first published in Russia in 1903, later translated into multiple languages, and disseminated internationally in the early part of the 20th century. The text allegedly documents the minutes of a late 19th century meeting of Jewish leaders discussing their goal of global Jewish hegemony by subverting the morals of "gentiles", and by controlling the press and the world's economies. Following the October Revolution, the 'Protocols of Zion' came to be seen in a new light by the Russian right. Viewed through the prism of their anti-semitic beliefs, the predominantly Jewish make-up of the new Bolshevik government appeared to provide material proof of the prophecies that the text had purportedly first revealed. In the 1930s it was proved that the source material for the forged text consisted jointly of the "Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu", an 1864 political satire by Maurice Joly, as well as a chapter from "Biarritz", an 1868 novel by the antisemitic German novelist Hermann Goedsche. - Covers loose. Interior very well preserved. Formerly in the collection of Grigorii Vladimirovich Berezhetskii (d. 1971), a White Army officer. OCLC 215277235.
8vo. (10), 420 p. With an engraved frontispiece. Contemporary sprinkled boards with giltstamped label to spine. A well-received edition of one of the major works of mercantilism, with many valuable suggestions for improvements to the Austrian economy. First published in 1684, the work achieved great popularity and by 1784 had been reprinted some fifteen times. It was, however, never translated (and Carpenter explains that "one need look no further than the title to ascertain one of the reasons"). The present edition, the thirteenth according to Carpenter, is the first to contain the "Impartial Thoughts About the Austrian Economy" (pp. 317-420), with a separate title-page, "compiled from the papers of an experienced cameralist", possibly the anonymous publisher of this edition. - Ownership stamp of the lawyer Dr. M. Florer, Erfurt, to title. A nice copy. Carpenter VI, 14. Humpert 82. This edition not in Kress.

8vo (122 x 185 mm). 14 pp. Original printed wrappers. First edition. Scarce English translation of the decrees implemented by the revolutionary government of Russia in 1918. Includes such fundamental measures as the abolishment of private landownership: "All private ownership of land is abolished immediately without any indemnification [...] Any damage whatever done to the confiscated property belonging from now on to the whole people, is regarded as a grievous crime, punishable by the revolutionary court of justice". Published in the Russian Revolutionary Pamphlet series by the Bureau of International Revolutionary Propaganda. - A few small marginal flaws. Not a single copy traced in the relevant Russian libraries. OCLC 806139662.
24 pp. Original printed wrappers. 8vo. Scarce provincial edition of a pamphlet authored and published between May and July 1917, when the Bolsheviks attempted further to prepare the impoverished peasants for the second step of the Revolution. The speech contained Lenin's theses formulated during the April Congress of the Russian Social-Democratic Labor Party, during which it was decided that complete nationalization of the land was necessary. The pamphlet was printed in large numbers and distributed in rural areas and among front soldiers, and played an important role in convincing Russian peasants of the Bolshevik cause. - Old inventory number to front wrapper; else very good.
