Imperial folio (427 x 620 mm). (8) pp.: title page, lithographic portrait frontispiece, 3 pp. of text, colophon on verso of final leaf. Printed in blue throughout, with title border printed in red; frontispiece printed in black and brown. Special commemorative issue of the "Gazzetta Ufficiale di Milano" in honour of the Austrian Imperial couple's visit to Milan during their tour of Northern Italy in the winter of 1856/57. Empress Elisabeth had insisted that their little daughter Sophie, a toddler of not yet two years of age, accompany them. The grand entrance to Milan took place on 15 January 1857. In spite of the luxurious special edition and the flowery ode (by the Gazetta's editor G. B. Menini) which makes up the first page of the text, the reception was cold, even hostile: most of the Italian noblemen failed to appear; in outrageous defiance, they even sent their domestics to occupy the aristocratic boxes during the special performance given at the Scala. The Italian hopes of indepence, dashed in 1849, would once more flourish in the Austro-Sardinian War of 1859, which would leave Austrian influence in Italy severely weakened. - Traces of folds; slight duststaining to margins; some edge flaws.
8vo. 144 pp. Splendid modern red morocco, fully gilt to spine, covers, leading edges, inner dentelle, signed by Hatchard's, Piccadilly. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. First edition; rare. - The first refutation of the famous "Manuscrit venu de Sainte-Hélène, d'une manière inconnue", which was published anonymously in London earlier that same year. This mysterious "manuscript", an apology of Napoleon Bonaparte's actions and intentions, was supposedly written by Napoleon himself or by a close friend. While soon exposed as a fraud, the work was long variously attributed to Madame de Staël, Charles Tristan Comte de Montholon, Benjamin Constant and E. J. Sieyes before Frédéric Lullin de Châteauvieux (1772-1841) from Geneva, a friend of Madame de Staël, was established as the author. Napoleon himself composed a refutation which was later published. The present anonymous publication is sometimes attributed to the publisher Michaud himself. "La première réfutation qui ait été faite de ce fameux libelle" (Hoefer). A perfect, wide-margined specimen bound in sumptuous red full morocco by Hatchards of London. Hoefer XXXVII, 447.20. Not in Barbier. Not in Martin & Walter.
4to. 32 pp. Modern half vellum over marbled boards. Rare anti-Turkish pamphlet, written by "etliche Catholische und Evangelische treuherzige Patrioten" in response to the threat of Ottoman hegemony. One of five known printings, all produced in the same year, occasioned by the looming Polish-Ottoman War of 1620/21. "Seeks to bring about a rapprochement between Catholics and Uniate Churches to counter the growing Turkish threat" (cf. Halle). The title alludes to the then-widely ready anti-Spanish pamphlet "Spanisch Post und Wächterhörnlein" (1619). - Severe browning to the first few quires, otherwise well-preserved. VD 17, 14:002899M. Bircher A 2555. Hohenemser 5003. Halle (Newe Zeitungen) 869. Hammer-Purgstall X, 1638.
94 x 63 mm. Vesica-shaped red wax seal. Stored in a paper box. Pointed oval seal of the Auditor General of the Papal Camera, apparently under Pope Martin V (1417 to 1431), showing the arms of St Peter and his own to the left and right side of a praying figure, above which are two statues of saints in separate alcoves and, at the very top, a Madonna, crowned by Gothic spires. - The Auditor-General of the Camera, one of the highest prelates, was the chief judge in all cases concerning the financial administration of the Curia and presided over the supreme court, to which the Pope referred the most important questions for decision. - A small chipped portion at lower right (no loss to arms), otherwise well-preserved.

8vo. 2 vols. in one. XX, 389, (3) pp. (4), 474, (2) pp. Contemporary full vellum with giltstamped red label to spine on 5 raised bands. All edges sprinkled blue. First edition. A treatise on social organization and political economy which shows a remarkable resemblance to the theories of the Physiocrats. Schmid(t) (1720-1805) was born in Avenstein, Switzerland, and long served as councillor to the Duke of Saxe-Weimar. He was in contact with many of the French enlightened philosophers of his time, including Voltaire, Diderot and d'Alembert. In the present book the author states that a flourishing agriculture is a distinguishing mark for the prosperity of a nation, as is an abundant population whose every member feels at ease. He favours private property and inequality of wealth as inherent to the natural order, but rejects luxury and pleads for direct rather than indirect taxation. Moreover, he argues for the promotion of the arts and sciences, for education for all classes of society, which entails freedom of thought, speech and writing, and for the establishment of a lasting peace. - Slight flaw to vellum at foot of front hinge, otherwise fine. INED 4116 (at length). Einaudi A867. Not in Kress.

Folio (ca. 290 x 405 mm). (48) pp. With engraved title and 9 engraved plates. Later half calf. All edges red. First edition. Attractive specimen of imperial representation (commissioned through the University of Vienna as a thesis for Joseph Julius Hörmann) commemorating the 900th anniversary of the Holy Roman Empire. The publication features brief biographies of the monarchs from Charlemagne to Leopold I, as well as nine magnificent triumphal arches, those for Rudolph I of Habsburg and Charles V constituting two of the most splendid examples. The engraved title shows a triumphal procession for Leopold I, featuring the Emperor on horseback, led by a group of angels and warriors as well as by Christ himself. The engravings were created by Johannes Andreas Pfeffel, Johann Ulrich Kraus, and Christian Engelbrecht. A second edition, more common than the first, appeared in 1725. - Extremities slightly rubbed. Lower margins somewhat waterstained; some worming near the gutter; occasional light brownstaining. Still a good copy of this celebratory work. De Backer/S. I, 1569f., 8. OCLC 165414698. Vienna, 1 Dec. 1733. (16) pp. - (Bound with): The same. (Trade Edict for Krain). Graz, 14 Dec. 1737. 6 pp. - (Bound with): Saurau, Corbinian von. Decree signed by the secretary, Franz Ignaz Pogatschnigg. Laibach, 14 March 1739. 1 p., folded twice. Contemporary blind-ruled morocco. The official publication of the laws of intestacy for the archduchy of Krain in the Austrian Empire. The clarity of the text is enhanced by the large engraved arbor consanguinitatis and numerous woodcut charts providing various examples of legal circumstances encountered. As author of the Pragmatic Sanction, which legitimized succession in the female line, the Emperor Charles VI may be said to have a special interest in the laws of inheritance. - Bound with this work are two decrees by Charles VI, regulating the trade in tobacco within Inner Austria (present in duplicate) as well as the trade within Krain, and a folding decree of procedural law by the Landeshauptmann of Krain, Count Saurau, signed in his secretary's hand. - Slightly browned but well preserved. Provenance: from the Auersperg fideicommissum library in Laibach with its armorial bookplate to pastedown; sold by H. P. Kraus to a private Austrian collector in the 1980s (includes Kraus's old description). Graff 1552. Cf. Codex Austriacus IV, pp. 539ff. Cf. Arents III, 702 (Silesian edition of the Tobacco Edict).
8vo. Original printed blue wrappers, lightly sunned, presentation inscription to title-page. First edition. The inscription to the title-page reads: "To Ruth Ericsen, In remembrance of a long, hot summer. Irving S. Cohen". A very good copy published in the same year as the passing of the Civil Rights Act. Irving S. Cohen produced a work that sought to revise the teaching of American history in its wake. The purpose is clarified in the foreword: "Its basic aim is to promote a better understanding of America's past by developing an increased awareness of the history of American Negroes, their problems, and their accomplishments, both individually and as a group". Melissa Weiner discusses the importance of this bulletin which "represented a true departure from most books then available. It accurately depicted slavery's role in American development, Africa's diverse and advanced cultures prior to the slave trade, and acknowledged African American agency in attributing slave revolts to horrific treatment during slavery". The work concludes with a seven-page bibliography. Weiner, M. F. Power, Protest and the Public Schools. Rutgers, 2010. p. 122.
4to. (20), 387, (1) pp. With woodcut title-vignette, 16 folding woodcut plates and numerous woodcut illustrations in text, some of which full-page. Contemporary limp vellum. Rare second Italian edition of this "important and independent" (Jähns) artillery manual first published in Venice in 1586 in Italian, then in a more extensive edition in 1592 in Spanish. This second Italian edition is no mere re-issue of the 1586 edition, but "is sufficiently different to be considered a distinct work. Collado, dissatisfied, probably, with the first attempt, rewrote the book in his native tongue" (Cockle). "Of particular interest are Collado's notes on the artillery school in Burgos, founded by Charles V" (Jähns). The illustrations mostly show cannons and their positioning in the field and on fortifications. - Binding somewhat soiled, first 10 pages rather waterstained. Occasional brownstaining; a few plates slightly torn, the last plate with slight loss to image. Short prayer in Latin inscribed to the flyleaf in a contemporary hand. - From the collection of Thomas Fremantle, 3rd Baron Cottesloe (1862-1956), commander of the Territorial Army and president of the Society for Army History Research. Unlike the 1586 and the 1641 edition, this second Italian edition is rarely seen at auction. Cockle 668 (note). USTC 4030464. Palau III, 57575 (note). Jordan 59, 0752. Graesse II, 214. Cf.
