It is generally agreed that Quesnay's physiological studies formed the basis for his later economic studies, hinting at the later development of his practical philosophy or, which is much the same for Quesnay, of his economic philosophy. The present work has a much broader view than Quesnay's other medical works which merely dealt with problems of medical practice. 4to (180 x 230 mm). 2 vols. Manuscript in various hands. Approx. 350 pages altogether. Contenporary half cloth over marbled boards. The rural domain of Méplier (Saône-et-Loire) was acquired in 1854 by the abbé François Béraud (1807-93), priest at Blanzy, to establish a relief programme for orphans and poor or morally neglected children. The property of 54 acres was for the greater part unsuitable land without proper accommodation, and great efforts were made to cultivate the land and develop the property into an agricultural institution. Montferroux in Gourdon was acquired in 1860 for the relief of orphaned and criminal girls. The institutions were united in 1888 when the "Société civile des Orphelinats agricoles du Méplier et de Montferroux" was founded. The minutes of the proceedings here present include the period from 29 November 1888 to 27 December 1927 and are all signed by the administrators; the proceedings of the first years include the signature of the abbé Béraud.

8vo. XX, 552, (4) pp. Contemporary papered boards. All edges red. First German edition of Thornton's treatise on monetary theory, "An Inquiry into the Nature and Effects of the Paper Credit of Great Britain" (1802), translated by Ludwig Heinrich Jakob. - Binding rubbed and bumped. Interior lightly browned as common. Provenance: from the library and with the extensive annotations of the Austrian political economist Wilhelm Neurath (1840-1901), with his ink ownership to flyleaf. He was the father of the economist and philosopher Otto Neurath (1882-1945), a leading figure of the "Vienna Circle". It was almost certainly through Otto Neurath that the volume entered the library of the economist Oskar Morgenstern (1902-77), from whose descendants it was acquired. In collaboration with the mathematician John von Neumann, the German-born Morgenstern, who had taught in Vienna before relocating to Princeton in 1938, founded the mathematical field of game theory and its application to economics. 4to. 3 parts in one vol. (8), 301, (13); (4), 40; 8, 84 pp. With engr. title page, 29 small and 9 large armorial woodcuts in the text (two of the latter on half-titles) as well as numerous initials. 19th-c. marbled half calf with giltstamped red label to spine. Second edition, first published in 1644: the history of the Neapolitan "seggi" (seats), i.e., municipal wards or decentralized, neighborhood-based political organizations. "Who one was in Naples was inextricably linked to where one was from. One's residence or affiliation within one of the city's five noble districts (seggio of Capuana, Montagna, Nido, Porto, or Portanova) or its lone popular district (seggio del popolo), as much as one's right of precedence in the order of march in parades and processions, reflected one's status or honor among fellow citizens and one's place in the local social and political structure" (Marino, Becoming Neapolitan, p. 3f.). As the seggi archives in the Archivio di Stato were destroyed during WWII, this text remains one of the principal contemporary accounts of the organization of the seggi. Both early editions being excessively rare, it was reprinted in 2005 by Paolo Piccolo. - Includes, with separate title-pages, "Sopplimento all' apologia del terminio" and "Della varieta della fortuna". The woodcuts show the arms of the various seggi as well as those of the noble families associated with them. - Variously browned throughout due to paper. From the library of the Ducs de Luynes at the Château de Dampierre: their bookplate reproducing the arms of Charles Marie d'Albert de Luynes (1783-1839), 7th Duc de Luynes, on pastedown. Large 8vo. 87, (1) pp. With 4 large folding lithograph plates (one bound as frontispiece). Contemporary half cloth over red marbled boards; gilt title to spine. First and only edition, very rare. The author was a school teacher commissioned by the Austrian government to visit foreign institutions for the care and education of neglected children. We could locate five copies, only one outside Austria (University of Marburg).

Most of the documents concern estate administration and debt collection: a letter from Charleston presses the firm to “force the debtor to pay†August 20 1855; one from New York complains of “a rascal . trying to swindle meâ€; and a different Charleston writer complains that a boarder and his father had stiffed him on multiple bills:

“I have not seen or heard from old McLeod since although I have written over one doz letters to him he has acted in a villanous manner to me a common hod carrier would not act in the manner he has Done although claiming to be a Class Leader in the Methodist Church . ‘Excuse’ his mother was sick &c&c which I have since learned was all a fabrication . 184816627London: Longman Brown Green and Longmans. Good. 1848. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Usual xlib marks. The spine has been reinforced with tape as have the internal hinges. I would be surprised if these were necessary as the book is still partially unopened! Original cloth covers are slightly bumped at the corners but show no other signs of wear. To bad some overzealous librarian got to the book. Probably worth having a conservator remove the extraneous bits. ; Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 19332 pages .
