189013401890. Ink and gouache with gold heightening on fibrous brown laid paper with a Jaipur Court Fee tax stamp in purple ink on the recto 12 1/2 x 9 inches 318 x 230 mm. Toning handling creases and minor scattered surface soiling throughout. There are scattered coeval inscriptions in ink on the recto and verso. The first revenue stamps in India were issued in the mid-nineteenth century during the Raj and they are still being issued to this day. Apart from issues for the whole of India many princely states provinces and other states also had or still have their own revenue stamp issues. Before independence Indian revenue stamps were closely modeled on similar designs from Great Britain as is the case with this carriage motif stamp from Jaipur.

The stamps were issued to denote various denominations including rupees and annas. An anna or Änna was a currency unit formerly used in British India equal to 1â„16 of a rupee. It was subdivided into four old Paisa or twelve pies thus there were 192 pies in a rupee. When the rupee was decimalized and subdivided into 100 new paise one anna was therefore equivalent to 6.25 paise. This particular stamp was used as evidence of court taxes remitted for property dealings. unknown

Cadell 1786. 175 x 105 mm. 7 x 4 1/4". 368 pp. 1 leaf ads.
Contemporary brown "school cloth" rough linen raised bands. Front flyleaf with owner inscription of John Cutler dated Sept 21 1789 four lines of Latin doggerel threatening anyone who steals the book with hanging and two large copperplate trials of Cutler's signature. ESTC N63834. Not in Darlow & Moule. A little fraying at top and bottom of joints light foxing and toning throughout due to paper quality a couple of small ink stains but a surprisingly appealing copy the text extremely clean and the unsophisticated makeshift binding--remarkably--with no significant wear.

This is an almost startling survival: an 18th century New Testament in Greek in its original utilitarian binding preserved in condition far better than what could be anticipated given the audience of generally uncareful pupils for which it was intended. Considering the usual depredations of school children the rough school cloth should have been worn to shreds long ago but against the odds it has fortuitously escaped hard use and now gives us a glimpse of an important element of the English schoolroom very close to its original condition. One particularly delightful aspect of our copy is the flamboyant declaration of ownership by a pupil called John Cutter who inked his name no fewer than four times in different styles and with calligraphic flourishes across the flyleaf. Cutter's neatly penned book curse threating any would-be thieves with hanging may have helped to preserve the book as it now exists. In fact there are few signs of use by any owner rightful or unlawful. The leaves are free from any markings and the insubstantial binding appears to have rarely left the shelf. Excudebant A. 1839ST20302-03London: Published for the Proprietor by Charles Tilt 1839-40. FIRST EDITION. 198 x 122 mm. 7 1/2 x 4 7/8". Two volumes.
Extremely pleasing contemporary crimson pebble-grain morocco covers with a double gilt rule surrounding a large scrolling central frame raised bands spine gilt in compartments with elaborate small tools radiating from floral centerpieces turn-ins gilt patterned endpapers all edges gilt. WITH A TOTAL OF 36 ENGRAVED PLATES 18 in each volume by William and Edward Finden and others as called for after sketches by Bacon and Captain Meadows Taylor. Joints just a bit rubbed at head and tail two small scratches to one cover corners with just a whisper of wear occasional faint offsetting from plates the faintest foxing or stains to a very few plates a bit of thumbing otherwise beautiful copies with only the most trivial of imperfections.

These are handsomely bound and extraordinarily well-preserved copies of the final two volumes of a series inspired by the author's time on the Indian subcontinent. The son of a noted sculptor Thomas Bacon 1813-92 was a talented artist whose service in the Bengal Horse Artillery furnished him with endless fascinating and "exotic" subjects for his sketches and drawings. In 1837 he published "First Impressions and studies from nature in Hindostan" which found an appreciative audience at a time when illustrated travelogues were much in vogue. He produced illustrations for Wilson's "Oriental Portfolio" and for the present "Oriental Annual" which had brought stories and views of the Far East to the British public beginning in 1834. In the 1839 edition Bacon and his very able engravers the Finden brothers present dramatic scenes of the seas around Tenerife and of the peaks of the Himalayas along with wonderfully detailed depictions of "monumental architecture" including temples tombs and military installations. For the 1840 volume Bacon collaborated with his friend Captain Philip Meadows Taylor 1808-76 a longtime British administrator with extensive knowledge of the region. There is more focus on cities in this volume and the authors recount both legends and historical facts to set the scene. The plates include a portrait of the emperor of Delhi but focus on city views and fine architecture. Produced when William 1787-1852 and Edward 1791-1857 Finden were in an extended period at the top of their craft the plates here are characterized by the great delicacy of detail sophisticated gradation of light and rich texture of surface for which they were known. While volumes from this periodical series appear on the market regularly they are rarely so finely bound and in such remarkable condition as the present pair. With woodcut initials tailpieces and frontispiece of a nun at a writing desk. Front pastedown with ink signature of Martin Bowes. Brunet III 1031; see also: Barbier II 1286. Joints and corners a little worn but the binding otherwise in excellent condition; just a hint of browning along a couple edges but A REMARKABLY BRIGHT FRESH AND CLEAN COPY INTERNALLY.

This is a collection of passionate love letters purportedly written by a Portuguese nun Mariana Alcoforado to her French lover Noël Bouton de Chamilly. First published in 1669 the letters express profound longing heartbreak and emotional intensity. Although the work originally included just five letters the racy content raised quite a sensation and the book proved so popular that it went through several expanded editions that included newly "discovered" missives. The present edition includes a total of 12 epistles by our nun and 11 responses from her lover as well as another series of "tender and passionate" love letters between a couple referred to only as "la présidente F. à M. Le baron de B." Though the original work is now widely believed to be a piece of fiction written by the supposed translator French diplomat Gabriel Joseph de Lavergne viscomte de Guilleragues 1628-84 it is still considered to be a very important epistolary novel providing insight into the emotional landscape of the time and influencing numerous adaptations and imitations in literature. Some importance of the work can be seen in the fact that copies of the first edition consistently bring substantial prices at auction more than $25000 three times since 2010. The early ownership inscription on the pastedown belongs to Martin Bowes 1670-1726 a barrister and fellow of the Royal Society. Abraham de Hondt & Jacob van Ellinkhuysen unknown

Occasional pencil annotations including figured bass; half a measure canceled on p. 185.

Disbound; first signature detached. Occasional small tears to edges; several minor inkstains to pp. 56-57; pp. 124-125 excised likely due to a scribal error with no loss of music; contemporary repairs to upper outer margin of p. 7; final leaf detached; remnants of red sealing wax to corners of index. It is notable that the all of the music in the present manuscript is drawn from repertoire significantly older than the manuscript's date of 1792 in some cases over 100 years earlier performance of music of the past being a relatively novel concept at the time.

The Academy of Ancient Music was "founded as the Academy of Vocal Music in 1726 to revive the glories of 16th- and 17th-century sacred music and madrigals. Again though it was the music itself rather than profit that provided the inspiration the founders a mix of leading professionals and aristocratic enthusiasts; and again the society was formalized and admitted larger audiences as the century progressed - although these changes brought their own problems with an increasing partiality for later Baroque music including Handel's oratorios and a gradual decline in missionary zeal for the older repertory." Simon McVeigh in Oxford Music Online

"Lady Cornewall" was most likely Catherine Cornewall 1752-1835 wife of Sir George Amyand Cornewall 1748-1819 a portrait of whom by Sir Joshua Reynolds 1723-1792 is held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. The manuscript index is possibly in her hand. "Rather different in character was the collection made by the Cornewall family of Moccas Court Herefordshire which has almost entirely vanished. Fortunately a detailed and most interesting manuscript catalogue dated 1796 and now owned by Albi Rosenthal has survived. This was predominantly a vocal collection amounting to about 2000 items with some Italian bias but besides Alessandro Scarlatti and Jomelli it extended to Gluck. A special section of the catalogue dated 1795 contained music belonging to a Miss Cornewall who also owned R.C.M. MSS. 2061-4." A. Hyatt King: Some British Collectors of Music p. 17. unknown

1870202721870. Early photographs of African Americans produced during the decades following emancipation provide important visual documentation of Black life during the Reconstruction and early Jim Crow eras. Portrait photographs and vernacular images from the late nineteenth century capture African Americans navigating newly won freedoms while confronting the economic and social constraints that defined the post slavery United States. Such photographs often record moments of labor travel and self presentation reflecting both the aspirations and realities of African American life during a period of profound social transformation. This small photographic archive dating from the 1870s through the 1890s preserves rare images of African American men during the generation immediately following the end of slavery.

Archive of four original photographs including two tintypes and one albumen print measuring approximately 2.25 x 3.25 inches to 4.5 x 6.5 inches. The most visually complex image an albumen photograph dating from the late 1890s depicts a Black man and a young boy standing on railroad tracks behind a caboose where four white men are also present. The African American man wears a hat and carries a large sack across his back while the boy holds a basket filled with produce suggesting a scene connected to travel commerce or railroad labor in the expanding transportation networks of the late nineteenth century. The presence of the caboose and railroad workers situates the photograph within the rapidly developing rail infrastructure that reshaped the American economy during the post Civil War period. The remaining photographs consist of tintype portraits of African American men dressed in the formal attire of the late nineteenth century including bowler hats vests and tailored suits. One sitter is photographed wearing a three piece suit and holding a cane while another poses beside a table while holding his hat in hand.

Portrait photography played an important role in African American communities during the decades after emancipation as newly freed individuals asserted dignity respectability and personal identity through formal portraiture. At the same time vernacular photographs such as the railroad scene record the economic realities and labor environments in which many African Americans worked during the late nineteenth century. Together these photographs document African American presence within both public labor landscapes and private studio portraiture during a formative period in the history of Black life in the United States. Four original photographs including tintypes and an albumen print measuring approximately 2.25 x 3.25 inches to 4.5 x 6.5 inches. One photograph with clipped corners; otherwise images clear and well preserved. Overall condition very good. unknown

1927055231Istanbul: Türk Tarih Encümeni Mecmuasi / Matbaa-i Âmire. AH 1343 1927. 1st Edition . Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Modern black cloth Arabic lettered gilt on spine. Roy. 8vo. 23 x 16 cm. In Ottoman script Old Turkish with Arabic letters. 207 p. First edition of this extremely rare Turkish book including Qirimi's first-hand account of the Prut War and Treaty 1711 and the defense of the city he participated in during the Russian invasion of Crimea 1735-36. The book was translated into Ottoman Turkish and edited by Turkish turcologist and soldier Necib Asim Yaziksiz 1861-1935 with annotations from the original work titled "Umdet al-Akhbar" i.e. The principle of the news. Abdulgaffar Qirimi was a Crimean scholar who lived in the Crimean Khanate in the first half of the 18th century and served in various government positions. Qirimi dedicated his work to Genghis Khan the Golden Horde and the Crimean Khanate. He reported many original details and especially for the 18th century his information is authentic and based on personal descriptions. The main part of the work is devoted to the Golden Horde starting from Genghis Khan and his descendants Crimean Khanate Gerayids and murzas. When Abdulgaffar Qirimi wrote a history of the descendants of Jochi Khan he used in his book more than 20 historical works as sources. He stated the names of these works and indicated where he got this or that information. At the same time he had access to the archives of the Crimean Khanate and used his family legends as well as popular traditions. Plenty of space in his work occupies his own observations as a participant in military campaigns and court life. His work concerning khans Berke Tokhta Uzbek Tokhtamish and Ulugh Muhammad reflects the popular version and is based on the oral historiography of the Tatars. The Russo-Ottoman War of 1710-1711 also known as the Prut River Campaign was a brief military conflict between the Tsardom of Russia and the Ottoman Empire. The main battle took place during 18-22 July 1711 in the basin of the Pruth river near Stanileti Stanilesti after Tsar Peter I invaded Ottoman Moldavia following the Ottoman Empire's declaration of war on Russia. The ill-prepared 38000 Russians with 5000 Moldavians found themselves surrounded by 200000 Turks under Grand Vizier Baltaci Mehmet Pasha. After three days of fighting and heavy casualties the Tsar and his armies were allowed to withdraw after agreeing to abandon the fortress of Azov and its surrounding territory. The Ottoman victory led to the Treaty of the Prut which was confirmed by the Treaty of Adrianople. 16500071451650. No Binding. Good. Single manuscript leaf size approx. 217 x 133 mm in Persian written on both recto and verso in elegant black nasta'liq script on buff paper. The text is arranged in ruled panels with a central vertical floral divider and enlivened by diagonal gilt cartouches and triangular cornerpieces illumintated in gold deep blue and polychrome floral decoration. The text is composed in refined Persian literary prose with rhythmic cadence consistent with ethical and didactic writing in the tradition of Sa'di of Shiraz and is very likely drawn from the Golestan or a closely related classical prose work. The confident calligraphy and balanced design are characteristic of Safavid-period book production intended for cultivated private readership. The illuminated cartouches with reserved script together with the delicate floral ornamentation reflect a mature Safavid aesthetic while later marginal or interlinear annotations in blue attest to continued reading and use. Condition is consistent with age and use. The paper shows overall toning and surface wear with areas of rubbing and discoloration including a noticeable rubbed patch affecting text on one side. Minor losses at lower corners and abrasions. Gold and pigments remain largely intact and visually effective. The calligraphy throughout remains clear and legible. Preserved as a single detached leaf.
