22653The Oxford Circuit Gloucester Reading Shrewsbury Assizes; Birmingham Assizes. A few items dated to 1887 1888 1891 1894. Lauriston Leonard Batten studied at Trinity College Cambridge see his entry in Alum. Cantab. He was admitted at the Inner Temple in 1882 and called to the bar four years later. KC 1905. Bencher 1914. The present collection is from the papers of his colleague on the Oxford Circuit Sir Richard Harington 1861-1931 12th baronet who was educated at Eton and Christ Church Oxford. Called to the Bar in 1886 he practised on the Oxford Circuit before taking up an appointment as a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal in 1899. He returned to England in 1913 and was appointed High Sheriff of Herefordshire in 1918 having succeeded to his father's title in 1911. From the Harington family papers. 27 caricatures and sketched portraits of barristers judges and others in robes including a few court scenes. In ink and pencil each on a separate piece of paper. In fair condition with light signs of age and wear. A miscellaneous collections of papers ranging from a 33 x 11 cm blue-grey strip embossed with the letterhead crest of the Royal Courts of Justice to the reverse of a 10 x 14 cm cutting from the printed calendar of charges 'Conspiring to cheat and defraud the Great Western Railway Company by obtaining and making improper use of a ticket at Didcot on the 19th December 1887.'. One caricature is on the reverse of an 20 x 25 cm piece cut from the cover of an 1894 manuscript writ. Several of the sketches are laid down on leaves torn from an commonplace book one of these leaves having on the reverse a poem 'A certain Mr. Day married a Miss Week' and humorous anecdote relating to W. R. Smith. Five items signed by Batten with his 'LB' monogram and seven items dated. Three are addressed to Harington one 'To - Richard Harington Esq: per. Great. Western. Railway.' and the material was clearly in order to amuse Harington Batten being regarded as one of the 'famous wits' of the Oxford Circuit. There are occasional annotations by Harington as for example 'A sketch taken by L Batten Oxford autumn circuit 1887' and 'Shrewsbury Assizes - 1887'. Another caption reads: 'The Under sheriff a sketch taken in court at Gloucester during the trial of Wadley. July 14th. 1887. by L: Batten.' The different drawings vary in style and those with thicker and looser lines being the most successful. Subjects and captions include 'N. T. Reid QC afterwards Lord Loveburn Ld. Ch' 'C. J. Darling Q.C.' 'Stanley Weyman' 'Queen v Pugh Cox & Wood' 'C. A. V.' a magistrate at the bench with two court officials 'Mirehouse' 'Miry' 'Hawkins' 'A. G. James. afterwards County Ct. Judge' 'Dr. Gumbleton' 'Gumby' 'Can't stand George Griffiths' 'reserved witness' judge at bench in spectacles 'Lieut Cole Master of the Rolls and his figure' 'The Prosecution which did the criminal act Reading Feb. 6th 1888' 'The Equity Junior which came special to Shrewsbury Assizes 1887' 'C. V. Called within the Bar very shortly'. Two are caricatures of a striking woman the plaintive in 'Birmingham Assizes - Aug. 4th. 1887. Timmins v Crofts for breach of promise'. Five feature Harington: one highly finished effort shows him in court with a wooden leg declaiming from 'Lay of the Citizen Diligent' by 'R. H.'; two show him in his robes grasping a money bag on which is written 'R: H: £700' in one he is running in the other captioned 'Borrows £700 and barely escapes with his life' he is being tackled by three other barristers one with a hockey stick; in another captioned 'The Red Flag of Anarchy in Gloucester Flower of D. C. C. Chipp' he flourishes a banner reading 'Briefs or Blood'; in another he stands with hands in pockets with syringe 'water-pipe' before him; in the last captioned 'In the Company's Interest - Returned Empty' shows him seated in court with another barrister 'Leslie'. 1871055863Istanbul: Matbaa-i Âmire. 1288 AH 1871. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. An extremely rare first edition of the earliest account of Muslims in Brazil documenting the second voyage to the American continent ever undertaken by the Ottoman navy and by any Muslim seafarers or travelers following Piri Reis in the 15th-16th century. The travel log that Abdurrahman Efendi wrote in Arabic after he came back to Istanbul from Brazil was translated into Ottoman Turkish by Antepli Mehmed Serif Efendi and published in 1288/1871. In this account the transit to Brazil is mentioned briefly since the writer's main focus was not on the voyage but rather on the situation of the Muslims in Brazil a group formed mostly by African slaves and their descendants who were enslaved by Portuguese and British colonists. Abdurrahman Efendi describes the lessons he gave a booklet in Portuguese with Arabic letters he prepared to outline the basics of Islam the city of Rio de Janeiro the plantations near the port some tropic fruits in Brazil vast forests from Brazil to the south of the continent the city of Ebaiye i.e. Salvador and Marnempugo diamond mining area called Lugabiryanti besides the daily life of Muslims in 19th-century Brazil such as the students' houses of worship tribal chiefs whom they call "Fa" or "Imam" etc. His Brazil travel log gives his route of return and the main points he visited like Lisbon Cordoba Gibraltar Tanca Jeddah and Mecca on his way back to Istanbul. With regard to this account two Ottoman warships bearing the names "Bursa" and "Izmir" left Istanbul en route to their new duty station in the Persian Gulf on 12 September 1865. The ships passed through the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar into the Atlantic Ocean planning to follow the African shoreline to Basra. After visiting Cadiz and the Canary Islands they set sail from the Cape Verde Islands but on 19 May they encountered a storm that threw them in the Atlantic and this 17-day voyage of uncertainty ultimately brought them to the shores of Brazil where they laid anchor at the port of Rio de Janeiro. A receipt issued for passage from Carson to Badie Nevada in 1881 aboard the Virginia and Truckee Railroad issued with a note that reads “Chinamen†in the remarks section. The Virginia and Truckee was originally built to service the Comstock Lode area in Nevada. Chinese who represented ten percent of Virginia City during the period referred to Nevada as “Yin Shan†which translates to “Silver Mountain.†Chinese people in Nevada held varied jobs in the state perhaps more so than in other parts of the United States with an 1870 census listing Chinese merchants miners laborers laundrymen cooks gamblers and harlots. Despite the heavy involvement of Chinese in Nevada during the period few ephemeral records surface in the trade likely due to the drops in population caused by the Chinese Exclusion Act and perhaps also due to the overall population drop when miners left the region. unknown

Whitehead's brother Philip was employed by the Bank of England from 1797 to 1810. During his employment at the Bank Philip Whitehead "adopted an extravagant lifestyle" and evidence came to light that he had defrauded Robarts & Co. by "forging an acceptance to a Bill." He was charged with forgery in 1811 and executed on 29 January 1812. The news of her brother's conviction was kept from his sister Sarah as long as possible. Learning of the execution Sarah Whitehead's mental health became unstable and she began to visit the Bank daily asking if Phillip was there. This continued until 1818 when the Directors offered Whitehead a financial grant on the condition that she stopped coming to the bank. Whitehead wore black crepe clothing which was a sign of mourning and as a result became known as the "Black Nun." To this day Whitehead's ghost reputedly haunts the Bank of England as well as the area on Threadneedle Street nearby. The myth of Whitehead's ghost appears in the poem New Year Letter by W. H. Auden. unknown

Apart from issues for the whole of India many princely states provinces and other states also had or still have their own revenue stamp issues.

Before independence Indian revenue stamps were closely modeled on similar designs from Great Britain as is the case with this carriage motif stamp from Jaipur. The stamps were issued to denote various denominations including rupees and annas. An anna or Änna was a currency unit formerly used in British India equal to 1â„16 of a rupee. It was subdivided into four old Paisa or twelve pies thus there were 192 pies in a rupee. When the rupee was decimalized and subdivided into 100 new paise one anna was therefore equivalent to 6.25 paise. This particular stamp was used as evidence of court taxes remitted for property dealings. unknown

Willems 560; Rahir 552. ◆A few instances of light foxing and other trivial imperfections internally but A REMARKABLY WELL-PRESERVED COPY the binding bright and scarcely worn and the text very fresh and clean with virtually no signs of use.

This is a most appealing little book containing the works of Severus the fourth century ecclesiastical historian who gave up great wealth in exchange for Christian seclusion and holy exercises and who became an ardent follower of St. Martin of Tours. Our volume includes Severus' most famous work his "Life of St. Martin" with its unforgettable pictures of this much venerated saint whose compassionate life includes the famous episode in which Martin cuts his cloak in half to share it with a beggar. Along with the "Life" are the "Dialogi Duo" which contains a reasoned review of the then prevailing bitter ecclesiastical feuds and provides information about these controversies not supplied from any other source. Also included is Severus' "Sacred History" a less original work summarizing events from creation to his own day but one much used in the Middle Ages when the author's correct and limpid Latin was greatly admired. Willems says this is the second Elzevier edition containing the same material as the 1638 edition but with the added continuation of the sacred history by Johannes Sleidanus 1506-56; Willems adds that the printing is "beautifully executed." This is a particularly lovely copy with distinguished provenance: it was previously in the library of the distinguished American bibliophile Mortimer Schiff 1877-1931 whose collection included works by great printers important illustrated books works printed on vellum and fine and historic bindings; it was later owned by H. V. Ingram a collector of fine bindings in the mold of Schiff a large number of whose books Ingram subsequently possessed. Ex Officina Elzeviriana unknown

The present Serenade was composed in 1912. "Bantock's compositional output was prodigious and from the turn of the 20th century to his death in 1946 he poured out apparently effortlessly orchestral and choral works piano and chamber music compositions for brass band and hundreds of songs. .Gradually Bantock's music passed out of fashion for reasons easily understood: Bantock was strongly influenced by Wagner and Richard Strauss but failed to find a consistently distinctive musical language of his own. He never adopted the advanced harmonic idiom of Tristan let alone Salome or Elektra. His harmonic style suggests rather such works as Der fliegende Holländer and Guntram. It is based on common chords and diatonic discords; the complex chromatic suspensions of Tristan are outside its scope as is the dissonant counterpoint of Strauss's more advanced works. His obsession with pseudo-eastern subjects was also a handicap since it was the theatrical east of magnificent processions the gigantic and the gaudy that attracted him; and although he travelled to several Asian countries the subtlety and restraint of oriental thought escaped him." "The new simplicity and American quality of Copland's Billy the Kid 1936 set a pattern which many American composers including Carter would follow in the next decade. Carter's simplified style appears in the First Symphony 1942 rev. 1954 . and the Holiday Overture 1944 rev. 1961 which begins like Piston and ends like Ives; typically both works were considered difficult despite Carter's effort to write in the populist manner. . Hints of Carter's later style can be found in. the explosive counterpoint of the Holiday Overture." David Schiff and Mark R. Porcaro in Grove Music Online

20. First Edition. The present work premiered in the original trio version in Paris by the Ars Nova Trio on 21 January 1930. "Georges Migot the French painter engraver poet philosopher aesthete and composer remains little known in today's musical world. His music was performed a good deal and his talent duly appreciated in the period between the wars. After the Second World War however his work like that of numerous other so-called independent creators fell into neglect. Though unique Migot was certainly no musical pariah. The composer was an active and highly acclaimed participant in French musical life who at around the time the Trio was composed became president of "La Spirale" an influential Parisian concert society dedicated to offering performances of newly-composed French and international works. The stylistically unified Livre des danceries for flute violin and piano is clearly indebted to this aesthetic. Written in 1929 three of its four movements were dedicated to the members of the "Ars Nova" Trio Jan Merry flute; Colette Franz violin; and Elen Merry piano which premiered the work in early 1930." "Following the resounding success of Evocations Jacques Rouché then director of the Théâtre des Arts asked Roussel to write the ballet score Le festin de l'araignée 1913. This was so successful that Rouché newly appointed director of the Opéra next commissioned an opera from Roussel to inaugurate his term of office there. Though he was touched by the successive waves of impressionism and neo-classicism in French music Roussel was an independent figure his music harmonically spiced and rhythmically vigorous." In 1738 he published A Compleat System of Optics in Four Books viz. A Popular at Mathematical a Mechanical and a Philosophical Treatise. Both comprehensive and reliable the work became probably the most influential optical textbook of the eighteenth century. It was also published in Dutch in 1753 in German in 1755 and in two different French translations in 1767 In 1778 an abridged version was published in English. In turn its popularity helped to establish the eighteenth-century conviction that light is particulate." DSB. hardcover
26519The letter to his daughter dated from Louth Lincolnshire 18 October 1884. Description of carving from 1851. Fragments from journal dealing with events in 1837 1851 1862 and 1866. Thomas Wilkinson Wallis was the greatest wood carver of Victorian England. Born in impoverished circumstances in Hull by 1844 he had established his own business in Louth Lincolnshire and for the 1851 he submitted seven carvings 'of which ‘Trophy of Spring’ was awarded a medal. It was his most intricate carving it took him 8 months to complete and was considered to surpass the work of Grinling Gibbons. Wallis also won medals at the 1855 Paris Exhibition and the London Great Exhibition in 1862.' In 1899 – four years before his death – he published his 'Autobiography of Thomas Wilkinson Wallace Sculptor in Wood and Extracts from his Sixty Years' Journal'. The eight items are in good condition on lightly-aged paper. All eight are in Wallis's autograph and they comprise: six fragments from the original 'Sixty Years' Journal' reproduced in abridged form in the printed 'Autobiography' including one of eight foolscap pages covering Wallis's time in London preparing for the Great Exhibition; a description by Wallis of the carving which caused the greatest sensation in 1851 his 'Trophies of Spring' with a list of the many plants depicted in it; and an 1884 Autograph Letter Signed to his daughter Kate describing his work on a copy of Turner's 'Fighting Temeraire'. The following description is divided into three parts. ONE: Autograph Letter Signed 'T. W. Wallis' to his daughter Kate. Dated 'Louth – 19th. October 1884'. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. For the background to this letter see Wallis's 'Autobiography' p.210: 'When my Municipal duties were increased by the appointment of Borough Surveyor I hand sic on hand two important Water-colour paintings – Lake Nemi and the Fighting Temeraire both the originals being by J. M. W. Turner R.A. During the Autumn of 1884 I finished these paintings as far as I could without having further reference to the originals – that of the latter being in the National Gallery.' Wallis begins the letter with reference to a 'roll of Photograph' which his daughter has sent him: 'Your Photographer has thought it best to Vignette the Photo sent of Keston'. Next he turns his attention to his work copying Turner's painting: 'In re Mr Acton the wine merchant and connoisseur Samuel Poole Acton d.1885 – I will tell you now: After spending two or three days at the Gallery i.e. the National Gallery getting all I could in pencil and chalk – and the Large sized Photograph of the “Temeraire†I came to the conclusion I should not surmount the difficulty in working out my Copy in Water Colors unless I returned to the Gallery to finish my work when it was well advanced or borrow a painting copied from the Original by an artist.' With a view to working from a copy he has written to the artist Alfred Hartley 1855-1933 whom he encountered at the National Gallery while he was making a small copy of Turner's painting asking him if he would lend it to him 'for a consideration'. 'He Mr. A. Hartley of Chelsea replied it was not his property' having been painted by commission for Acton whose address Lynton House in Bromley is of interest to Wallis as he has been 'staying in the same town at the same time and working at the same picture'. Acton 'immediately gave his Consent' and Hartley's copy 'is now in my painting room as one of the helps to work out my own'. Wallis continues the letter with a critique of Hartley's painting and praise of his own before turning to family matters. TWO: Six Autograph fragments of autobiography cut from a journal. Neatly and closely written. The main section of autograph with the first page headed 'AE 30. 1851' consists of eight full pages on two foolscap bifoliums paginated 155 to 162 with 35 lines to the page. Laid down on the second page are two newspaper cuttings from the Halifax Guardian 15 March 1851 regarding an exhibition by Wallis's brother Samuel c.1812-1873. The text of this eight-page fragment is of great interest as it deals with the rapturous reception accorded to Wallis's work at the Great Exhibition of 1851. An abridged and edited version is printed in Wallis's 'Autobiography' between pp.92 and 97. Among the many omissions from the printed version is Wallis's reaction to the positive response to his work 'Spring': 'Really this seems astounding … If the jury hold the same opinion I am sure to receive a large Medal.' References in the eight autograph pages to Samuel Wallis are omitted from the published version as for example when Wallis writes that before leaving for London with his 'Spring' 'In the afternoon I made a large drawing 6ft x 2ft 4 – for the side of a hearse for my brother Samuel: he cant carve these without having working drawings supplied to him.' Another passage omitted from the published version begins with a reference to Wallis's installation of his brother's work within the exhibition building in London: 'I unpacked my brothers Cabinet Carving of a side-board back and fixed in the place allotted for it: and got the packing case led away: that which is told in a few words took several hours to perform. I fix this in the North Gallery and an amateur carver who was very proud of his work began to tell me of some rare carving below. I found he was referring to my own!' Another omitted reference is to fellow-exhibitor William Gibbs Rogers 1792-1875: 'Without any intention on my part I seem constantly pitted against the “Queens Carver.†Many seem somewhat disappointed in Rogers' work the “Cradleâ€'. The other five fragments which again are abridged and edited when reproduced in the published 'Autobiography' are single slips with writing on both sides ranging in size from 22.5 x 21 cm to 12 x 18 cm. The five are cut from pieces of the same ruled paper as the eight-page fragment. One of the five paginated 45-46 deals with events from 1837 reproduced in 'Autobiography' on pp.27-28 with one long omission including the comment: 'There is much that a man may write in the privacy of a Diary that should never be obtruded on the public.' another of the five fragments dates from 1862 with reference to his work for the Great Exhibition of that year a third from 1866 concerning his wife's illness and the other two fragments undated one of them dealing with the marriage of his daughter to Alfred Kew. THREE: Autograph description of his carving which caused a sensation at the Great Exhibition of 1851 'The Trophies of Spring' headed 'Catalogue.' 1p. foolscap 8vo. On a bifolium which also includes again 1p. foolscap 8vo a 'List of Plants introduced into Spring … birds & caterpillars Lambs head & Shepherd's. Crook – the numbers of each'. The catalogue description which ends with a long quotation from Thomson's 'Seasons' reads 'The Apple-blossoms and Grape-buds with accessories to be carried through the Seasons There are above 1000 buds and flowers and about 50 varieties The whole carved out of solid lime tree from original studies from nature taken expressly for this work and for this Exhibition at a great cost of money & time. last eight words deleted I wish to point out the originality of this design for the seasons and the closeness to nature in the execution of the details.' The letter to his daughter dated from Louth [ Lincolnshire ], 18 October 1884. Description of carving from 1851. Fragments from unknown
