New New English Original binding with original dust wrapper. 3 volumes set in special slip case. Large 4to. (43 x 33 cm). [xi], 1182 p. in total. 2400 postcards. Born in 1852 in Kalucz, a town on the eastern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Max Fruchtermann came to Istanbul in 1867 and two years later opened a picture framing shop in the city. Having decided to have the first Ottoman Postcard Series printed at Breslau in 1895, he ensured through his cards, which number in the millions, that the name "Turkey and the multifarious images associated with it" spread throughout the entire world from Canada to New Zeland. In 1966 when Fruchtermann's daughter-in-law Anna, before closing down the establishment, sold her remaining stock (subsequently realized to number around 600,000) to a secondhand dealer for 2500 liras, she probably never imagined the importance of her father-in-law's postcards. They are not simply photographs of landscape panoramas monumental buildings and people of the time. They are individual documents that reflect in their human types and cross-sections of everyday life the noteworthy political incidents of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the ethnic and cultural diversity embodied in the Ottoman identity. As such they have acquired significance far in excess of original expectations. It always comes as a pleasant surprise to collectors to see that ordinary objects left to us from the past, and usually assumed to be of mere functional value, in time acquire special significance. For us, however, far more than a pleasant surprise these postcards are a door opening up on our recent history. The places, incidents and types that Fruchtermann saw and appraised with his own eyes have been given new life and brought together as a whole thanks to this study and up-to-date treatment by Mert Sandalci.

258 pages. "On the adbication of Nicholas II Russia's new rulers found themselves confronted by a host of problems, two of which were particularly urgent. What was to be the new government's relationship to its rival in power, the Petrograd Soviet, and what was to be its position on the war and on the aims for which Russia was fighting? To a large degree the answer to the first question depended on the Provisional Government's response to the second. This in turn depended on a third: how did the Tsar's successors conceive of Russia's role and place in Europe? Expressed in the terms of 1917, should the nation still struggle for Constantinople and the reassertion of Russian preponderance in the Balkans? Or should the Russian people fight now only in defense of the revolution and for the democratic principles it proclaimed?" - from Abstract. A dissertation presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Yale University in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Average wear. Green boards with gilt lettering upon spine. Binding intact. Book

Very Good Greek, Modern (post 1453) Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Greek (Modern). 79 p. Not in OCLC. The Metropolis of Chalcedon is an ecclesiastical territory (diocese) of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Christianity spread in Chalcedon during the 2nd century AD. The city was initially the see of a bishopric before being promoted to a metropolis at 451 AD, at the time of the Fourth Ecumenical Council. It is one of the four remaining active Greek Orthodox Church metropolises of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Turkey today and the only one surviving in Asia Minor (Anatolia). During the 14th century, the metropolitan see remained vacant, due to the Ottoman conquest of the region. However, it was reorganized in the 15th century, possibly after the Fall of Constantinople and the subsequent incorporation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate into the millet system of the Ottoman society. The first recorded metropolitan of that time was Joseph, in 1477. In the following years, the jurisdiction of the metropolis was extended to the east. During the late 17th century the see of the diocese was transferred to Kuzguncuk (Ermoulianai, Chrysokeramos), where it remained until 1855. At that period a number of monasteries were established, like the one of Saint Panteleimon, which was declared Stauropegic. The metropolitan of Chalcedon was one of the five Elder metropolitans from the wider region of Constantinople, the other being those of nearby Herakleia, Cyzicus, Nicaea, and Nicomedia. Following an Ottoman decree of 1757, they had to be always present in the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and had direct access to the Ottoman Sultan, to whom they announced the election of the new Ecumenical Patriarch. From the mid-19th century, the local metropolis prospered thanks to the significant population increase and economic development of the local Orthodox population. In 1855 the see of the metropolitan returned to Chalcedon during the primateship of Metropolitan Gerasimos. Moreover, the newly erected church of Saint Euphemia became the new cathedral. The metropolitan mansion was built near the cathedral in 1902. This is the first and only known printed regulation book of the Greek Community in Chalcedonia (Kadiköy). Extremely rare.

As New English Original creme leather bdg. with special design. A Byzantine saint gilt under the window of front cover. Mint. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. [8], 282 p., 186 numerous color figures. Tatlarin: Wall paintings of churches no. I and no. II.= I ve II no'lu kiliselerin duvar resimleri. Tatlarin underground city, which was one of the most important underground cities of the Cappadocia region, could only be discovered in 1975 because its original entrance had collapsed and had gone underground to be opened to the visits of tourists in 1991. The toilet in it demonstrates that toilets were being used in Anatolia around 3000 years ago. There are many food storage areas and churches within it. It is believed to have been used as a center for religious or military purposes judging by the large size of its rooms. Only two floors of the Tatlarin underground city which has spread over a pretty large area can be visited currently, however works continue to open the other floors to visits as well. Although there is a large number of churches around and within the Tatlarin underground city which is near the Acýgöl district of the Nevþehir province a major part of them have collapsed due to natural causes. This book includes wall paintings of two of those churches, No. 1 and 2.
