Binding: Contemporary mottled full calf rebacked expertly saving the original spine spine with seven raised gilt bands; compartments densely gilt ornamentated; with gilt lettered title on brown morocco label on two and three. Blind dentelle pattern tooled on edges of covers; pasted and free endpapers marbled. <br><br><br> Notes: John or Johann Nieuhof 1618 – 1672 is best known for the account of his journey from "Guangzhou"Canton to Peking in 1655-1657 which enabled him to become an authoritative Western writer on China. The book was first published in Dutch in 1665 by Johan's brother Hendrik and the Amsterdam based publisher and printer Jacob van Meurs. The publication was successful several edited editions followed geared towards commercial interests also translated into French German Latin and eventually into English. The English version was not published by Van Meurs but by John Ogilby instead. The book consists of the notes and illustrations that Nieuhof made in his position as a steward on Peter de Goyer and Jacob de Keizer's embassy to the emperor of China. The work itself is split into two parts. The first part contains the written account of the embassy led by Peter de Goyer and Jacob de Keizer to the emperor of China. It details the entire journey from "Guangzhou"Canton to Peking and back again. This part also contains descriptions and depictions of all that the embassy came to pass on its trip. The second part consists of an overview of China describing bridges mountains temples customs and costumes supported by illustrations. Prior to this period the image of the Chinese in Europe was dominated by fantasy illustrations. Many subsequent artists and architects based their work on Nieuhof's pictures. This book was deemed to be dangerous and was banned by proclamation of the Privy Council of Scotland in 1666 which also ordered that a copy be publicly burnt on the high Street of Edinburgh near to the Mercat-Cross by the hand of the Hang-man and was re-banned again in August 1688. JOHN BROWN OF WAMPHRAY was a Church of Scotland theologian who served as the minister of the parish of Wamphray in Annandale during the mid-17th century. He removed to Wamphray to begin serving the parish at an unknown date estimates vary from 1637 until 1655 and remained in residence until 1662 when he was imprisoned and later exiled to the Netherlands for his public opposition to the royal imposition of bishops on the Church. Due to being translated into English by the bookseller John Ogilby in 1669 this is one of the earliest European attempts at an accurate description of China and its population. Due to its isolation under the Ming dynasty earlier descriptions of China relied on fanciful tales and legends many originating from ancient and medieval texts and hearsay. A Folio sized hardcover book measuring 42.5 x 4.5 x 28.2 cm approx 16.3/4" x 11.1" x 2.5" . In powder blue cloth boards with a brown spine unknown material with gilt title lettering and an inset image of an Oriental on the front board. Top edge gilt. Some light wear and a few negligible marks to the light blue cloth almost inevitable with this colour actually a rather strange binding but looks good on the shelf showing the spine only. INTERNALLY FINE. A former Owner's bookplate Dennis Law on the front pastedown otherwise NO Inscriptions or marks. A Fine clean and tight copy. 18pp prelims double page Map 327pp 106pp 6 blanks. Black and White Plates Illus. Maps Plans and Portraits. The book consists of both an account of an embassy of the Dutch East India Company to the Shunzhi Emperor 1638-1661 and an account of general Chinese customs and occupations. The information was gathered and collated by Johan Nieuhof one of the party which visited the Emperor in Beijing. His first-hand account therefore allowed accurate descriptions and depictions of Chinese architecture clothing and landscapes. Notably the book contains possibly one of the earliest descriptions of the cultivation of TEA specifically stating its expense and its value to East Asian society. A great chance to acquire a great copy of a facsimile of a book which in the Original costs many LITERAL Thousands of £s and $s! This has to be a Limited run production due to it's size and type but as the Scolar Press went out of business in the 1980s. I have been unable to find out how many copies were produced PLEASE NOTE : This book is very large and overweight c. 5.5 Kilos UNPACKAGED and will almost certainly require extra postage for International customers. Sometimes attributed to Theophilus Presbyter sometimes to Roger of Helmarshausen. The book allows detailed insights into the techniques used in the applied arts in the high Middle Ages. The work is divided into three books. The first covers the production and use of painting and drawing materials painting techniques paints and ink especially for illumination of texts and painting of walls. The second deals with the production of stained glass and techniques of glass painting while the last deals with various techniques of goldsmithing and other metalwork. It also includes an introduction into the building of organs. Translation and notes by Robert Hendrie. An ex-library copy in publisher's blind-stamped green cloth gilt lettered. Text block is clean and sound although quite shaken. Binding is frayed along part of the rear joint but board remains firmly attached.
